Common OblivionEdit

I'm the head monkey for the Common Oblivion project. Some of the initial discussion was here on UESP, but since UESP was having server problems, discussion moved to ES Forums: WIPZ COBL. --Wrye 15:38, 3 March 2007 (EST)

Good. Thanks for your reaction! Am I correct that there is no dispute mechanism in place at UESP? Nor anything in the lines of "request for action on this page" which would be very useful? I have used the proposeddeletion scheme in place of such, to signal the rest of the community that there is something that needs attention with a specific page, but deletion is not always what is desired and I think there should be an alternate way of waking up people to learn an issue that needs resolving. --FMan | Talk (contribs) 19:01, 4 March 2007 (EST)
Keep in mind that usually (i.e., leaving out anything with both me and Aristeo combined), there's not that much of a dispute. Use the talk pages first. If that doesn't resolve the issue then go to the Community Portal and/or ask for other people to chime in. --Wrye 23:18, 5 March 2007 (EST)

py2exe for easy installEdit

Hello Wrye!

I'm a python programmer myself. I use py2exe to create an executable from existing python code. It can handle wxpython nicely. This way the users don't need to install python nor wxpython, so they can't install the wrong version.

Anyway all you need to do is this:

install py2exe
create a setup.py:
----
from distutils.core import setup

import py2exe

setup(console=['main.py'])
----

then run:
setup.py py2exe

And you got a working distribution of the program in the dist directory. (All the files the program needs must be in the dist directory.)

Here is a more verbose Tutorial: http://www.py2exe.org/index.cgi/Tutorial

80.99.234.149 10:47, 14 February 2007 (EST) Brain

I'm aware of it, but choose not to use it for a variety of reasons. While it makes installation easier it has other disadvantages:
  • Not as flexible. Current Mash and Bash support both python 2.4 and 2.5.
  • Versions is not a problems since almost all users simply used the download links from the readme.
  • I don't want to hide the "goodness" openness of python. Granted, few people take advantage of it, but some do.
  • The open code makes it easy for users to go in and tweak the code. This doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen some. It's been particularly useful for me in debugging.
  • I tend to do pretty frequent updates. Since all the update needs is the new bash zip, this makes it pretty easy for users (once they've done the initial installation).
  • Releasing is currently pretty trivial for me. Just zip the files, ftp 'em and I'm done. Exe would make that a lot more complicated.
  • Release size is a lot smaller. (I was on dialup a year ago, so I'm not insensitive to this!)
  • And of course, most importantly, this way I get to make the users sweat just a little. If they can't handle a pretty simple install process, then they can't handle the application itself!
Thanks for the thought though!

Offensive CommentsEdit

Your latest comments towards me on UESPWiki_talk:Consensus were far from necessary and were very offensive. I'm getting sick of seeing this trollish behavior from you; you're making it very difficult to contribute to the wiki and your actions have made a couple active editors – including myself – leave the site. I'm not saying that you don't make any good points or suggestions in your comments, but the way you present them is almost always directed to insult me or other members, which is a gross violation of UESPWiki:Etiquette.

If you continue this harmful behavior, you will be blocked from editing in full accordance with the blocking policy. I can tell that you are a nice person, and I hate to give these kinds of messages to nice people. However, I will not stand by while you drive off anyone else off the site. Please consider improving the progess we're making on the wiki, not hindering it.

--Aristeo | Talk 18:19, 24 February 2007 (EST)

As a reasonably new and unbiased member I must say that this response, as ever, seems rather over dramatic and possibly a more than a little hypocritical. Jadrax 18:48, 24 February 2007 (EST)
Aristeo, it is not a violation of etiquette to call a liar a liar, nor a time waster a time waster. And you are a practitioner of the "big lie" -- it is not I, but you who repeatedly engage in trollish actions and behavior. Moreover, you are, without a doubt, the number one waster of time on this wiki -- the amount of time that I have to spend dealing with your frivolous objections and repeated violation of consensus action is my sole major source of displeasure in the various things that I do in the Elder Scrolls world.
Why you persist in thinking that you are in the position of authority to block a fellow admin on your own initiative, is beyond me. If you had support for such a move, it would have shown up on the Principles Controversy topic. It did not. In fact the consensus that evolved out of that was the anti-consensus actions that you had taken were not supported.
While right now, as an admin, you (unfortunately) still have the technical authority to block me (as I have the ability to block you), such an action on your part would not be backed by either consensus nor policy. I think that it would be inadvisable for you to attempt it.
PS: Thanks Jadrax. Welcome to Aristeo-World.--Wrye 19:03, 24 February 2007 (EST)
I would like to point out that in my opinion as an administrator and in accordance with the relevant policies on the site that you are in the wrong and your behavior needs to change immediately. I would be more than happy to talk with you in IRC to settle any of our differences, if that's what you want, but I will not tolerate anymore gross violations of etiquette or personal attacks. Calling me a liar will not resolve anything.
I'll give you one last opportunity to behave. If you proceed to personally attack me, I will block you for one week in accordance with the blocking policy. --Aristeo | Talk 19:22, 24 February 2007 (EST)
You're still suffering from delusions of authority that you don't have. You continue with your big lie. You claim (without argument) that I am violating policy, when I am not. You claim that it is I who is engaging in the trollish, threatening behavior, when in fact, it is you. (Other readers will note that it is not I, but you, who is threatening blocking -- the only substantive weapon that either of us have at this point). --Wrye 19:39, 24 February 2007 (EST)
Aristeo, one of the main conclusions from the whole Principles Controversy was that your interpretation of civility and etiquette did not agree with the community's interpretation. The consensus of that previous discussion seemed to be in favour of wikipedia's guidelines. Wrye's comments have not been directed at Aristeo as a person, but are directed at Aristeo's actions, and therefore are not unacceptable by those standards. In fact based on wikipedia's guidelines, a devil's advocate could argue that Aristeo's warning is more unacceptable than Wrye's comments, since it threatens to block Wrye because he disagrees with Aristeo.) My understanding was that one of Aristeo's main reasons for starting wikiscrolls was because he disagreed with this community about the interpretation of civility. So it does not seem appropriate for Aristeo to again be trying to impose his standards when it is already clear to everyone that they are not the community's standards.
As for the "relevant policies" quoted by Aristeo, the fact is that there are at this moment no such relevant policies. I'd been hoping to finish assembling a page on the topic before there was another incident requiring the need for a policy on etiquette. Unfortunately, I haven't yet. In the absence of such policy, the discussion at Principles Controversy is the best gauge of the community's opinion on this subject.
In any case, I do not believe that it is any way appropriate for Aristeo to take administrative action against Wrye. There are clearly personal differences here, and no administrator should ever get involved in a case where he or she is personally involved. If there is truly a need for administrative action, another administrator will recognize that and do what is necessary. --Nephele 19:43, 24 February 2007 (EST)

ArbitrationEdit

If you will consent to it, I think you are one of the parties involved in the argument to change Aristeo's status from being an administration. I feel that we should solve this through an Arbitration outlined here. The goal of the arbitration will be to decide if Aristeo has overstepped his bounds as an administrator or acted in such a way that removing those responsibilities is justified. I have already said, I would be willing to act as the arbitrator.

Glad to make you smile...Edit

I really do think you're well-spoken and level-headed! Geez, if more people gave out needless compliments, fewer people would be insecure in themselves. So, would you marry me? By the way, feel free to just call me Mercy, if you'd like. Somercy comes from another website I'm on. Somercy 12:19, 26 February 2007 (EST)

Sorry Mercy, but the zookeepers won't let us monkeys get married -- apparently they're concerned that it would interfere with the breeding experiments. And well, you know... Stud monkey has his duties! And BTW, thanks for the the continued work on keeping the site stylistically up to par! --Wrye 13:43, 26 February 2007 (EST)
Well, anytime you want a girl who'll go ape for you...<3. Thanks for the appreciation!
And, hey, do you know what's going on regarding Aristeo? I'm lost here, and don't want to feel left out...Somercy 15:24, 26 February 2007 (EST)
I think that you should just read through everthing and draw your own conclusions about the character and actions of the participants. People are not always what the seem to be (either negative or positive) at first glance. --Wrye 15:55, 26 February 2007 (EST)

Putting me in my place.Edit

Sorry about the incorrect edit on the SI glitch page, the comment you left on the edit explained my mistake. Learning something new everytime I log on here! --Enru 00:18, 10 April 2007 (EST)

No problem, no need to apologize. You had the right point about doing it ASAP. I just wanted to keep the notion of "patch mod" clearly distinct from the idea of "repair utility" so as to not confuse people. --Wrye 00:37, 10 April 2007 (EDT)

thanks for the suggestionsEdit

ey Wrye thanks for the explenation, I really appreciate your suggestions trying to contribute but having not much time at the moment (school exams ) and a bit of inexperience with wiki editing,, but i'm working on that to improve. trying to get more active this summer after the schoolyear

anyway, thank you for the comment --Geniepert 13:51, 26 April 2007 (EDT)

Okay, coolEdit

Glad that's cool. There are a lot of orphaned pages that need to be deleted, you know...I just went through and tagged a couple of obvious ones. Somercy 09:06, 19 May 2007 (EDT)

PythonsEdit

Just removed an edit from my user page. Wasn't actually vandalism in retrospect -- but comment should have been on my talk page (i.e., here) rather than my user page. (Generally not okay to edit people's user pages.) Commenter should of course be aware that my utilities (Mash and Bash) are written in python. In fact, my site (Wrye Musings) sometimes shows up on the python most popular referrer site logs (admittedly far down the list). --Wrye 15:24, 20 May 2007 (EDT)
