CodingEdit

Since you seem proficient in advanced Wiki coding and programming so i figured to ask you... do you know any easy to use site that helps to learn advanced wiki use, I searched the web but all I can find is general how-to guides for fixing things.-Puddle TalkContribs. 22:38, 28 June 2008 (EDT)

The best places to look are at wikipedia and wikimedia. Most of our help pages have links to the related page(s) at wikipedia or wikimedia which contain more detailed information on that particular topic. --NepheleTalk 10:29, 2 July 2008 (EDT)

Oblivion:MargarteEdit

Not to argue, but in the first note in notes it states the Margarte will never barter with the player. So, you cannot get 5 items for 50 gold. Leaving the edit I reverted untrue and redundant. I was just asking if it could be re-reverted instead of starting an altercation over this.-Puddle TalkContribs. 16:43, 2 July 2008 (EDT)

Sometimes what's written in the articles is wrong, and needs to be corrected. This is one of those cases. You can sell her these two ingredients. Try it yourself in-game if you're not convinced. --NepheleTalk 16:52, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
You cannot get 5 items for 50 gold, but she will buy 5 items for 50 gold... that note is explaining that as part of a quest, she will purchase Minotaur horns and Ogre teeth, which is a true statement and was not previously covered in the article. --GuildKnightTalk2me 16:55, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
Except that you can. I just did it in game. I'm trying to update all of the articles accordingly, so it would really be helpful if everyone stopped edit conflicting with me to add incorrect information. Also, can I suggest that the conversation be continued at Oblivion talk:Ogre's Teeth, where some discussion on this topic has already occurred and where I was planning to post an update, assuming I could ever get there. --NepheleTalk 17:06, 2 July 2008 (EDT)
Ah, I had thought I had went through this quest, obviously I was mistaken.-Puddle TalkContribs. 18:01, 2 July 2008 (EDT)

Shivering Isles Maps Problems...Edit

Just some random things that have struck me as odd, or missing overlays. The description for Image:SI-map-Vitharn_Bailey.jpg says there is a door at C..... which is inexplicably missing. The letter and the descriptions are there, but there's no door icon. I can photoshop one in, but I was just curious as to why that didn't show up. Image:SI-map-Grove_of_Reflection.jpg is missing an overlay (the zip file only had 6 of the 7 overlays for that ruin). Image:SI-map-Xeddefen,_Fales2.jpg is also missing an overlay, but since it only needs to have the "Out" sign added, I could use one from a different overlay easily. Other than that, I'd say the SI maps are finished (other than the exteriors and the Gardens of Flesh and Bone. Vesna 20:19, 3 July 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for the push on all those overlays, Vesna! :)
For Vitharn Bailey, the door does exist. It isn't showing up on the original map either because rpeh overlooked running past it, or possibly because after the quest that particular door ceases to be a door. One problem with creating the original maps: tfow makes the whole area visible, but it does not automatically display all the doors... you still have to search those all out in order to have them show up.
As for the other two, I'll have to dig around and see where the overlays went. It's possible they're sitting on my computer, but I just forgot to add them to the zips. I'll post new zips once I've found them. --NepheleTalk 20:27, 3 July 2008 (EDT)

MW map, one issueEdit

Hi, no rush here, but could you teach me how to disable the map parameter in the place summary on Morrowind:Tukushapal? It is another interior tomb-within-a-tomb and the maplink on the wiki page points nowhere right now. I did add keywords for both the tomb and the quest to the map at the Marvani Ancestral Tomb marker. Cheers, --BenouldTC 20:29, 3 July 2008 (EDT)

You could add "|mapname=Marvani Ancestral Tomb" to the place summary, to get it to point there instead. Although something strange was done with that particular template, so at the moment that edit would have some unintended consequences; I'll work on tweaking the template so that change will do what it's supposed to. We could also add a "|mapname=none" option to the template, but that option doesn't exist at the moment. Let me know if you think it's needed. --NepheleTalk 20:52, 3 July 2008 (EDT)
Thank you for the prompt action, I did insert the |mapname=Marvani Ancestral Tomb, which serves users best here, I think. --BenouldTC 21:08, 3 July 2008 (EDT)

Signature problems (again)Edit

Hi Nephele,

I have another signature problem. My signature, as you will know indludes a vertical bar: |. This plays havoc in templates such as Template:Cookie. I tried to solve the problem by replacing it with {{!}}. That was then updated to {{SUBST:!}}, which meant the problem wasn't solved. I tried using |, but got the error message "Invalid raw signature. Check HTML tags". I know I could solve the problem instantly by changing to use a different object, like Rpeh's signature, but I thought I'd ask you whether there's an obvious solution first, because I like my signature as it is. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 16:27, 4 July 2008 (EDT)

You might want to try | (to produce |). That's the standard HTML character entity, whereas | is not an officially defined HTML entity name (at least not according to my HTML 4.0 reference) and therefore isn't recognized by the wiki sanitizer and would probably produce error messages. --NepheleTalk 19:20, 4 July 2008 (EDT)
Thanks, it works now. I get all my commands from this list. I think I'll need to find a new one. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 06:52, 5 July 2008 (EDT)

EmailEdit

HI Nephele, earlier today I sent you an email but its not coming up in my outbox so im not sure wether it wsa sent properly or not. Just checking, did you get it?--Volanaro 13:16, 7 July 2008 (EDT)

Yes, I got your email. Thanks. --NepheleTalk 14:15, 7 July 2008 (EDT)
Glad to hear so, just thought you might want a bit more of an explanation for me being "Over Zealous" as you put it a while ago. I never intend offfence or to cause disruptive edits, its just the way I am and im stuck like it. I wish I could make it go away but i cant, sorry im babling again, point is I apologise if I have caused too many disruptions recently. Thanks for your time.--Volanaro 12:17, 9 July 2008 (EDT)

Sorry..Edit

Sorry about that,I got really bored. It was stupid, i know. --Prince of Madness 19:36, 7 July 2008 (EDT)

On the one hand, no apology was required. I was just tyring to provide some tips. On the other hand, editing the wiki just because you're bored really isn't a good idea. Everyone involved with the site has better things to do than to cleanup after editors who are just trying to find ways to kill time. If you'd actually like to edit on UESP, find a project (for example, Task List) so you can find a way to contribute to the site productively. If you're just trying to entertain yourself, please find somewhere else more appropriate to do that. --NepheleTalk 16:34, 8 July 2008 (EDT)

ok ill start helping out on the task list. Thx! --Prince of Madness 02:26, 12 July 2008 (EDT)

Another Special Pages ChangeEdit

Would it be possible to stop Special:Wantedpages showing pages from User and User_talk spaces? As you may have noticed I've been trying to fix some of the silly redlinks that we have but it looks like a lot of the silly mistakes are in user space (and sandboxes - yours and Lurlock's especially). Taking these off the list would be a huge help when looking for pages that genuinely need creating. Since you're the PHP expert, could you have a look when you get a chance? –RpehTCE 10:38, 13 July 2008 (EDT)

I first assumed that you meant that you don't want any User: or User_talk: pages to appear on Special:Wantedpages. But after digging into the code, I realized that feature is already implemented; scanning through our list of wanted pages would seem to confirm that. So now I'm guessing that you mean you don't want redlinks that appear on User: or User_talk: pages to trigger the appearance of that redlink on the wanted pages list?
If so, it looks pretty straightforward to implement, assuming I'm reading the SQL query correctly (including the wonderfully descriptive variable names: pg1 vs pg2 vs page). It should just be a change of != 8 to NOT IN (2, 3, 8). I've got the tweaked code ready to go, but I don't really want to put it on Daveh's todo list until he's had a chance to catch up with some of the more urgent tasks on that list. --NepheleTalk 18:51, 15 July 2008 (EDT)
Yes, sorry. That's what I meant, but you're right that it's not exactly a priority until other stuff is done. It's just that this is the last of the useless special pages, and if we can make it a little more useful that would be great. –RpehTCE 00:49, 16 July 2008 (EDT)

Obscene?Edit

I recently noticed a new user, Crapulax. I was wondering, would this name be considered obscene? It seems like so, but I would rather ask you first.-Puddle TalkContribs. 21:12, 18 July 2008 (EDT)

Personally, I don't think the user name needs to be banned. First, "crap" may be mildly vulgar, but it's not obscene. Second, I don't think we need to start disallowing words just because they contain four-letter sequences: is "scrap" no longer allowed (OK, somewhat extreme case, but still)? If another admin disagrees, he/she is free to act differently, but it's not something I feel needs to be acted upon. --NepheleTalk 10:56, 22 July 2008 (EDT)
I agree, however I figured an admin might think otherwise, so I thought I would ask about it.-Puddle TalkContribs. 11:35, 22 July 2008 (EDT)

Finaly Finished Archiving!!!Edit

I will go back though to check for any mis-categorized discussions, create several wanted categories and other such maintenance. Just a few questions...

 • Should we merge all (Month) 2005 discussions? Each category has at most 1 or 2 discussions, and if we keep adding categories in that section as time goes on, it could get cluttery... Maybe delete the month from the date=2005 (Month) parameter?
 • What about categorizing other (mostly talk page) archives?
 • I don't think we need to list all IP addresses that are listed on the AN to be blocked, unless they have set a new policy (such as shared IP address blocks).
 • I'm thinking to create a "Server" category in the Technical Issues category. There are certainly more than enough discussions in that.
 • And totally unrelated... what are cookies? (not the wiki kind! I ran across several discussions mentioning them...)

And now I'll get to work categorizing all the "uncategorized" archive discussions... :) Vesna 17:54, 21 July 2008 (EDT)

Oh, and one more thing... it's about the Captcha system (the bane of my existance). After some experimenting (I had many opportunities...), I noticed that I didn't have to get the phrase correct... infact, spelling just the first word was enough for me to save the page. Is this what you meant by "patrollers should be immune to Captcha checks" (maybe it wasn't you.... anyways)? Or does every editor get that message? Vesna 00:37, 22 July 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for all that work, Vesna :) (Oh, by the way, and to give credit where credit is due, I didn't do the first half of the CP -- Ratwar did)
 • I'm inclined to just stick with month-by-month archives throughout for the sake of consistency, although I don't feel particularly strongly either way.
 • Yes, I'm sure there are discussions hidden on various other talk pages that could be added to the archive system. Of course, not all discussions need it. Any discussion that basically just deals with its related article should not need to be archived (e.g., a discussion about spelling on UESPWiki talk:Spelling is already in the place where you'd expect to find it, so I don't think it needs an additional layer of categorization). But there are various general-interest discussions hidden in the wrong place (Talk:Main Page for example); there are also discussions that may have started in the right place but then expanded into much broader discussions. The tough thing is just going to be trying to find those discussions. If you want to search a few probable locations looking for them, go for it. Others will probably just need to be added as we stumble across them.
 • Yeah, I'd agree that we don't need a list of all blocked IPs... and probably not even all blocked users. If we just need a list of blocks, there are other ways to obtain that (e.g., through Special:Logs, or through the list of pages containing the blocked icon).
 • Sure, a separate Server category probably makes sense
 • Cookie. Basically, it's a bit of hidden data sent every time your browser talks to UESP's server so that UESP knows who you are. It's how web sites in general "remember" information and know to customize web pages based on the person who's viewing the page.
 • With captcha, I'm pretty sure we have it configured so that admins are exempt from all captcha checks -- there's a flag somewhere in the captcha settings that says to automatically trust all edits made by admins. What crossed my mind is that patrollers should probably be treated the same way, given that we similarly trust that patrollers aren't spammers or bots. At some point I'll hopefully remember to track down where that setting is done, and add it do Daveh's todo list....
--NepheleTalk 11:31, 22 July 2008 (EDT)
Alright, thanks for clearing that up. :) Vesna 17:50, 22 July 2008 (EDT)

Reason for Reversion, PleaseEdit

Hi. I wonder if you could explain why you deleted my comment on Oblivion talk:Vampirism#Photo but left the original, reprehensible comment in place? The "photo" in question is not offensive in the slightest, and is clearly only deemed so by the poster because of his bigoted views on homosexuality. If you're going to delete my entirely reasonable response, you should delete the unreasonable original. 74.53.153.170 12:05, 23 July 2008 (EDT)

Making personal attacks on another editor is never acceptable and does nothing to help resolve any issues. And accusing another editor of being a homophobe is a personal attack. Comments on talk pages should stick to discussing the content of the articles. Although the original poster's comments may not be supported by too many other editors, at least the comment is just discussing the article content and is not jumping to conclusions about the motivations of other editors. --NepheleTalk 12:11, 23 July 2008 (EDT)
Thank you for your prompt reply. Very well. I have instead asked for more information. However, I think you, as an administrator, should be taking a more active role in sorting out problems like this rather than using the Undo tool so liberally. My comment could only possibly be offensive to one user - the user who posted the original remark. The original, however, is clearly homophobic however much you might wish to cover your eyes to the fact. That will offend far more users. 74.53.153.170 12:31, 23 July 2008 (EDT)
Perhaps if you'd care to give me a chance to actually make it through all of the edits that have been made overnight I'd have a chance to take a more active role. As it is, I haven't even been able to finish a quick scan of what's happened, let alone starting to tackle more problematic cases. And because I've now had to waste even more time replying to your questions, it's going to be a few more hours before I have a chance to make it through the rest of the recent edits. Sometimes just giving us administrators a chance to do our jobs is far more productive than interrupting us constantly with requests. --NepheleTalk 12:39, 23 July 2008 (EDT)

Image LicensingEdit

Image licensing. My problem is about that. I'm uploading a sidebar picture of my own, kind of like what Rpeh has on his userpage. Seeing as it's my own creation, and not copyrighted by anyone, what license should I use? — Unsigned comment by Daedryon (talkcontribs) on 26 July 2008

If you created the image (and assuming you're not just talking about a screenshot taken from one of Bethesda's games), then it's your choice as to what copyright rules you would like to have apply to the image. In other words, would you like other people to be able to use the image? If you want anyone to be able to use it, then you can declare it to be public domain; if you want it to be subject to the same copyright rules as the rest of the site, choose the attribution share-alike license (the one that says preferred); if you want to limit its use, choose creator gave permission for upload. --NepheleTalk 00:51, 27 July 2008 (EDT)
Thanks! I just uploaded it, using the preferred license. Hope I uploaded it properly -crosses fingers- Daedryon 01:02, 27 July 2008 (EDT)

PatrollerEdit

Oh, sorry! I had no clue you guys appointed Patrollers :P I thought it was like Wikipedia where you could patrol Recent Changes and undo vandalism and the such. I'll remove it post-haste! DaedryonTCE 02:05, 27 July 2008 (EDT)

Everyone is free to help monitor the Recent Changes page; we'll take any help we can get with keeping the new edits under control ;) But we do also have a group of experienced editors who make sure that nothing slips through the cracks. Unlike Wikipedia, we're still at a size (barely) where we can make sure that every edit gets checked, and that's where the Patrollers come in. --NepheleTalk 02:12, 27 July 2008 (EDT)

Charcters storyEdit

Hey I wrote a story for one of my Oblivion characters. I was wondering if you liked it. The link is Jon. Everyone is invited to read, but it contains Dark Brotherhood spoilers, so read at your own risk. Jesus lover 23:14, 30 July 2008 (EDT)

I am moving the link to Jon

My new templateEdit

Once you have some free time, mind taking a look at this and letting me know if it works properly? I tried using the raw code from the Mehrunes Header template, but had too much trouble using multiple images within the code. Upon taking the code in my Topright template from the RuneScape Wiki (http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Topright), I was able to add multiple images perfectly. I figured UESP needed a template like this to make putting things in the Top-right of a page easier. Cheers! DaedryonTCE 00:26, 31 July 2008 (EDT)

Offhand, I have no idea why Template:Featured article (which I'm assuming is the actual source of the code used on the Mehrunes header template) uses so many nested divs. I doubt that most of it is needed, but it would take some digging for me to figure out what bits actually are useful... and therefore to figure out whether your template might need more added to it. I'll see whether I can find some time to look into it in the next few days. --NepheleTalk 01:08, 31 July 2008 (EDT)
Yeah, I wanted to look into that too. The only problem I have with my template is I don't know how to redirect images so I can make an image redirect to my talk page, like you can do with the FA template/KotN Header template/Mehrune's Razor Template/etc. DaedryonTCE 01:13, 31 July 2008 (EDT)
