Forums on Tapatalk[edit]

Hello Daveh. I'm new here on wiki (as user, but I know this wiki for quite some time) and I'm a little known on UESP forums. I have to thank you and all modders for you work on this site, it's really great.

To the point - I have started using Tapatalk app on my Android phone and I couldn't find UESP forums there. Would it be possible to add the forums there/to edit forums to appear there? I think I wouldn't be the only one to appreciate it, I suppose there are others too. It shouldn't be so hard, since Tapatalk has some kind of plugin for phpBB forum (better than write it from scratch... maybe :-) ).

Thanks for your time --Pavouk106 09:54, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Email delivery problem from[edit]

Hi there.

Your outgoing SMTP server ( identifies itself as "content1.localdomain", causing email delivery to fail at my mail provider since the helo string does not resolv to the connecting IP address. In essence, your mail server is lying when it connects and introduces itself.

The relevant SMTP log line from my end:

NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[]: 450 4.7.1 <content1.localdomain>: Helo command rejected: Host not found; from=<> to=<> proto=ESMTP helo=<content1.localdomain>

It's an anti-spam thing, most spambots fail helo checks so it really cuts down on spam. Not sure how widespread this helo-restiction is, but all SMTP-servers using it will refuse mail from, it's not just my provider.

I see resolves to, so updating your SMTP server configuration should fix this. If you're running postfix, setting "myhostname =" should do the trick.

I think I solved it by correcting the hostname on content1/2 to be the FQDN ( instead of just content1. If this issue still occurs, however, just let me know. -- Daveh 01:57, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

Not the most relevant ad[edit]

This ad came up while I was patrolling...not sure if you want to block it or not, but it really seemed out of place for UESP. Robin Hoodtalk 06:45, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Actually, just browsing through 40 pages I had up, about half were ads for meeting singles (mostly female, sometimes male, often of a specific ethnic origin), another 1/3 just didn't show anything at all, and the few remaining were for other products. I can't imagine on a gaming wiki that those sorts of things would be getting a whole lot of hits...especially not compared to some of the ones we used to have where the content was mostly gaming-related. Robin Hoodtalk 06:50, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
I'm starting to see a couple more ads for dating sites since my last post. In particular, I'm seeing this one a lot, which is particularly obnoxious in that it displays "Jesus Is Lord" across the ad on about half the pages I open. There are a few others for dating sites as well. Robin Hoodtalk 04:20, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Blocked...but let me know if you ever see it again. -- 13:19, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Community Portal Broken[edit]

I'm just posting on your and Nephele's pages to draw attention to this issue. This almost certainly requires some kind of server-side fix, as it looks like there's a bug/data corruption coming into play here. Robin Hoodtalk 00:18, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Vandalism found[edit]

Hi Daveh,

while using the wiki I found someone recently (i.e. 1-2 days) vandalized the page:

Look into the "Notes" section. I found at least 3 sections:

  • Snoop Dogg
  • "*** DA POLICE" with that ***
  • having *** a **

Community Discussion About rpeh[edit]

There is a community discussion about rpeh going on on the Administrator Noticeboard. Several active members have commented on the discussion, yet Krusty and rpeh are both trying to remove the discussion completely. Since it's against all wiki policy for an involved admin to remove a discussion about himself, I would ask that you step in and make a ruling on whether the discussion should stay or go (as distinct from a ruling on the proposition itself). Robin Hoodtalk 19:19, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

It's a clear attempt at disruption removed by two different admins. I'm disappointed to see a senior editor like RobinHood adding to the disruption in this way. rpeh •TCE 19:21, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
It should be noted that "two" administrators includes rpeh himself. I'm equally disappointed to see that he would feel he can violate policy in that manner. Robin Hoodtalk 19:25, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Removing disruptive content is part of the admin job. Nothing I did violates policy as it was removed first by Krusty - I merely back his decision. Now please stop disrupting the site further. This is very poor behaviour. rpeh •TCE 19:27, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
What exactly constitutes "disruptive behavior"? Who is it disrupting? To be clear, I voted against de-admining you, but you aren't helping your case. Verbally assaulting a group is not an appropriate way of dealing with content you believe to be stolen, and I would argue it is more disruptive than a petition for your removal under the circumstances. –SkoomaManiac 19:37, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Repeatedly re-adding a pointless vote with no chance of passing that's only stirring up bad blood is incredibly disruptive. Being told this and then running off to a different venue to complain about it is even more disruptive. Certainly I had planned to spend this evening on the site, but discovering that a mass of utter nonsense has been vomited over the site and that various malcontents are intent on stirring up trouble has put me right off. Krusty, an uninvolved admin, removed the discussion because it served absolutely no purpose. The editors who put it back should all know better. rpeh •TCE 19:57, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Tokens/Pointers and functions...[edit]

Hello, I'm currently trying to create a user box, {{User EditsPerDay}}, that shows how many edits are made per day by a user (duh). To get the data, it transcludes the number of edits from Special:Editcount/user and the number of days from a template the counts the number of days between two dates, {{DaysSince}}. It then feeds them into a simple #expr that divides the two. The problem is, the #expr is looking for variables, not tokens/pointers, thus it craps out. There are two different solutions that I can think of. One: have a function (called something like #tovar) that returns the variable that the pointer is pointing to. Two: change #expr to allow pointers to be entered, and have it just read the variables that the pointers are pointing to. The closest function we have on the wiki is to #load a #saved transclusion, but that causes a UNIQ...QINU error (like this: </nowiki>{{{numedits}}})

I understand that the wiki is going through upgrades, and I also understand if you don't want to do this because it's of limited use, but I'd appreciate some feedback. ?• JATalk 23:19, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

(Edit: A workaround for my particular problem would be to have a #saved variable on Special:Editcount/user that can be #loaded elsewhere. That would (presumably) be easier than the other proposed fixes.)

Two new Admins[edit]

Hey Daveh! Two of the temporary administrators recently received successful RfA nominations, so I just wanted to put this notice here. Since they’re both administrators at the moment, the obviously just need the CheckUser right – unless I miss something (like a time limit or whatever). Thanks in advance. --Krusty 23:57, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

They may also need Oversight rights. I don't think we ever really came to a firm decision on whether all Admins would get those rights or only some. Nephele should probably be added to Oversighters as well, as discussed some time ago on the AN. Robin Hoodtalk 00:07, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
As I mentioned on the AN, these rights to be given to experienced admins only, and I would be completely against giving them to any new administrator. elliot (talk) 00:42, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Something's Wrong[edit]

I don't know if this is just a few isolated cases (I've had other users report to me that this is also happening to them), but the main page is just a white screen for me, I had to go to content3 just to view the site. Something seems to be seriously wrong. I don't have a clue what's going on, so I can't really give you anything more detailed than that unfortunately. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 02:36, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks...that was just me making a mistake with some file permissions which preventing the wiki from loading. All should be fine now...if a page doesn't show try reloading or purging. If it is still happening a lot let me know though. -- Daveh 02:39, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Today's the Day![edit]

February is just about done, and it's time for the temporary admins tenure to end (unless I missed a topic where the final date was extended). However, due to a admin noticeboard discussion, of the five temporary administrators, only DKong27 and SerCenKing haven't successfully received community recommendation for permanent adminship. Dwarfmp, Legoless, and myself have all received support from the community to remain as administrators going forward. The only thing that needs to be done is for you to make the final call. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 20:37, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the notice. I'll de-admin the necessary people in a few days as you three already have the admin status. -- Daveh 01:12, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Arena Manual Link[edit]

Hi Daveh,

Just wanted to inform you that as of April 13th, the link to the Arena manual at no longer works, it says it has expired. I have found a working PDF version of said manual at This seems to be the only other manual I can find at this time. Thanks. 14:25, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Custom CSS[edit]

Hey Daveh. I was looking into using custom CSS on my user page, and it looks like we need an extension for that. For MediaWiki version 1.16+, there's CSS, and for MediaWiki version 1.10+, there's PageCSS. Is there any chance of adding either extension to the wiki? Thanks in advance. • JATalk 23:02, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

The easy way is probably just to define CSS styles like "JakTitleText" and add them to your own CSS page. No, it won't look pretty for anyone else unless they do the same, but unless we have need of those extensions elsewhere, I don't see much point in adding either of them. While it's not as pretty, you always have the option of using MetaTemplate to put styles into a local variable, then using that local variable wherever you need the style to apply. I've done that in templates like {{Hold List}}, and you can probably follow the same style on your user page. Robin Hoodtalk 23:46, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

New Namespace[edit]

Hey Dave! It's just about time the MMO got it's own namespace, so would you do us the honor of creating it? The Community Portal Discussion on it is leaning towards "Online" as the name for the new namespace and "ON" as the abbreviation for it. Unless you have some objection to it's creation, just about everyone is ready to see it made. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 01:38, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Sure thing, I'll do it tonight when I get home. I also assume the "DawnGuard/DG" namespace is good to go as well? -- Daveh 11:57, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
I'd hold off on Dawnguard until we get some idea of how big it is. It might just be a KotN type of an expansion, which would not require its own namespace. Nobody is really sure yet as far as I know. --TheRealLurlock Talk 13:00, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Ahh, good point...will do. -- Daveh 13:38, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Done! -- Daveh 22:14, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, Dave! --AKB Talk Cont Mail 01:05, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Hm, it doesn't look like the search functions are working for the Online namespace. Try searching, for instance, "Coldharbour" and then "Online:Coldharbour". • JATalk 01:11, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes, it doesn't appear to be implemented in our default search engine. It has been already added to Sphinx on Content3, though. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 01:15, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
I think the issue is the search options are custom so no one currently has "Online" enabled to be searched and can't actually set it to be searched. It appears to work for anonymous users after a fashion. I'll add the "Online" option to the search options and look into it more to make sure it is working. -- Daveh 01:25, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

() I think you've hit the nail on the head, Dave, because if I add the namespace ID to the search list in the URL, I get Coldharbour returned. (example) Robin Hoodtalk 03:33, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

MW 1.19 Testing[edit]

I don't know if you'd need this, since you can probably set something up locally, but if you do want to test MW 1.19 under an external load, I can reduce or eliminate the normal timing checks in the bot and redirect it to the test wiki to simulate a bunch of users making changes. I'm thinking that could involve having it do a few page edits, perhaps revert a few templates back to an earlier version then put it back to the most recent version, renaming pages back and forth, that sort of thing...I just don't know if the load from a single source, even a bot running rampant, would be enough to simulate the normal load on the wiki with all the page reads and such. If it does, though, we can then try fine-tuning it and see if there are only certain types of edits causing the overload. Anyway, just thought I'd make the offer. If you've got things under control and are already testing locally, so much the better. Robin Hoodtalk 01:37, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks...I'm going to try first just doing regular load testing and see if that can duplicate the problem. I don't know exactly the problem but it looks like any page read causes multiple writes to several database tables for some reason which quickly overcome the database server. There may be some conflict with all our custom code and v1.19. -- Daveh 11:12, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Daveh. I wanted to say that I think the war on spammers is being lost. At the start of June there where about four blocks a day being issued and the week before that (24th to 27th May) four blocks in total. On the 23rd June there where thirteen blocks needed and twenty two on the 20th June. There was a discussion on the admin board about what could be done, but I feel the situation is becoming critical and needs addressing. Thankyou for whatever you can do. TES Item Demonstration Project Idea[edit]

TF2 wiki has something awesome going on. They are making videos showing off every item and all of their uses. I don't know if this is the right place to post this, if it isn't please point it out to me. Tell if you like it and you think it would help contribute to the UESP. — Unsigned comment by Piwah (talkcontribs) at 22:30 on 18 July 2012 (UTC)

We don't use videos on the wiki. If you want to hear the community's thoughts, it would be better to post this on the community portal. —Legoless 21:43, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Can't edit MW map[edit]

Hi Dave. I just went to edit an entry on the Morrowind Map to fix a capitalization error in the Wiki Page field (Balmora's "Mages Guild" has a lower-case g), but the editor reported that I didn't have permission to make the edit: "You don`t have permission to update! -- ouv6qdvugfrkv7p946s87g6k32". I just double-checked, and I do still have Cartographer permissions, so I'm not sure what's going on. Can you have a look? Thanks! Robin Hoodtalk 23:37, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Appears to be an issue on the database permissions side. Am looking into it and will let you know when fixed. -- Daveh 15:16, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
It was actually an issue with the MediaWiki session name which I must of changed at some point in all the upgrade attempts. I've reverted to the original session name although you may have to log out and back in to refresh it. Tested successfully with the given example of the Balmora Mage's guild. -- Daveh 15:42, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, Dave, that seems to have fixed it. I noticed, though, that it didn't take the capitalization change on its own. I had to make another innocuous change (and then put it back) in order for the record to get saved. Robin Hoodtalk 19:16, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Problems with Admin Board[edit]

Hey Daveh several of us on the IRC at the moment can not view the admin noticeboard. It just loads as a blank page. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 17:45, 3 September 2012 (EDT)

Just me editing some pages and making a typo which caused the server to not like me. It should be fixed now. Thanks for letting me know though... -- Daveh (talk) 17:48, 3 September 2012 (EDT)
I'm still getting the problem. To clarify:
The first results in a blank page, but the second loads correctly. In addition, I am having the same problem with your talk page right here. • JAT 17:51, 3 September 2012 (EDT)
It was ongoing until a minute ago. I forgot I had to reset the Apache server due to my mistake. It *should* be fine now but will keep an eye on things. -- Daveh (talk) 17:53, 3 September 2012 (EDT)
Update -- It may also just be a load spike whenever I change the Wiki settings. I just noticed the same thing happened on content1 when I made a valid change to LocalSettings.php. Only lasts a minute bu t I've been making multiple changes all day. -- Daveh (talk) 18:03, 3 September 2012 (EDT)

$wgStylePath incorrect[edit]

I'm not sure if this is an upgrade problem or not, so I'm posting it to your page instead of the Admin Noticeboard. It looks like $wgStylePath is mis-set. {{STYLEPATH}} should return, but instead, it returns Robin Hoodtalk 22:45, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

It isn't misset (it has been that for a while now) but I did forget to update to v1.19 along with the content servers which may cause some mismatched content. -- Daveh (talk) 08:44, 6 September 2012 (EDT)
The skins URL was ringing vague bells when I saw it, but since it wasn't working, I just figured I was imagining things. Thanks for fixing it! Robin Hoodtalk 14:55, 6 September 2012 (EDT)

Site Crash?[edit]

I'm not sure if this is just me, but the site seems to only be working by going to content3. As all editing, account creation, and all other activity except mine has stopped in the hour or so I've been on the site, I think it's a fair possibility that something is wrong for everyone. Also, if anyone else can access recent changes to see this, please reply to this conversation so I know it's just me. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 09:55, 1 October 2012 (GMT)

The site first started having issues about four hours ago, I was online at the time and having no problems, then both ES and I had issues at that point. I left for a while and came back just now to see everything seems resolved, so I can't say how long the issue lasted. — ABCface 11:44, 1 October 2012 (GMT)

I restarted Apache around one hour ago just before I left for work which is probably when it came back up. I haven't had time to see what the issue might have been yet (nothing obvious anyways). -- Daveh (talk) 12:04, 1 October 2012 (GMT)
Well I'm glad it wasn't just me (on a more personal level that I'm glad my rig wasn't malfunctioning, not as in I wanted the site down), and that it was fixed. Thankfully this happened early in the morning on a weekday, so not that many people are likely to have suffered. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 18:57, 1 October 2012 (GMT)

Forum Admin[edit]

Hello Daveh,

I am a recent addition to the Moderator team on the UESP forums and wanted to first and foremost say how much I enjoy the site, both the Wiki and the Forums. I have been using UESP since I was a teenager (I'm 31 now) and have found it to be the best source for ES information out there. Thank you for your vision and creation of the site!

The second reason I am posting is to ask that Avron the S'wit be given full Administrator permissions on the forum. We have been wanting to add new smileys to the forum for some time but she does not have the authorization to do so. We also recently decided to have a "Sweetroll Weekend" in which all of the user ranks were to be changed to Skyrim sweetrolls with various amounts and colors of frosting but again Avron did not have the permission to change the rank images.

The forum is much like a family right now, and having an Administrator will full privileges will allow us to do some neat things within the forum to promote an even stronger sense of togetherness.

I would also like to suggest changing the "chatroom" link to go directly to the Xertion web client as Mibbit was recently hacked and may not be the safest place for our users to chat. I sent the link to you via email.

Thank you again for your site and for your time. I appreciate you taking the time to consider this suggestion.

Original message was received and responded via email which is included below for reference:
Thanks for the notice and your long time usage of the site! Avron is an admin of the forums but to make those changes she also needs shell access to the forum server which she doesn't currently have. I'll talk to her and see if she wants and is able to use it. If not I'm always able to do these server side things easily so long as I know what exactly is wanted.
-- Daveh (talk) 17:47, 21 October 2012 (GMT)

Just thought you should be aware of the discussion going on at UESPWiki:Community_Portal#Dragonborn_Namespace. The general consensus seems to be that we'll be needing a new namespace pretty soon, so if you could set that up, it would be a big help. (Particularly, getting it set up before people start making articles in a non-existent namespace). TheRealLurlock (talk) 12:37, 7 November 2012 (GMT)

If you actually read through the entire discussion, just the part about namespace, there are actually more people in favor of waiting to find out more before creating a new namespace than there are in favor of making it now. Also, the discussion is only two days old. We are not ready for this yet. The only thing established by consensus is DB for the abbreviation. — ABCface 14:33, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
Aye—it probably wouldn't hurt to be ready to implement a new namespace, but we know next to nothing about this expansion, so we can't know whether we need the space just yet. eshetalk 14:58, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
Yeah, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the discussion, and ready to make the change soon if necessary. As many rumors as there are flying around, I wouldn't be surprised to find people start making preliminary stub pages, and we don't want that happening before the namespace exists. (We've already got dozens of ES Online articles, and that release is much further off.) Anyhow, just making sure you're keeping an eye on this, as you're the only one who can set that up, since Nephele's been gone for months. TheRealLurlock (talk) 03:35, 8 November 2012 (GMT)

So long as the short/long name for the namespace is final there is no harm in making it sooner as opposed to later. -- Daveh (talk) 14:44, 8 November 2012 (GMT)

As its been nearly a month and Dragonborn is shaping up to be the largest addition yet, I and many others believe it's time to add Dragonborn as a unique namespace. Unless you see a reason to hold back now, please make the change. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 14:22, 2 December 2012 (GMT)

Server Access Discussion[edit]

We're having a chicken & egg issue with the discussion of server access. I think the initial idea was to just see if there was community support before coming to you, but obviously you need to be okay with the idea or the discussion is moot. If we can get your input, that'd be great. Thanks! Robin Hoodtalk 20:17, 8 November 2012 (GMT)

Thanks...I'll be posting some comments there shortly. -- Daveh (talk) 21:38, 8 November 2012 (GMT)

Apparently, our Skyrim map is so accurate, we haven't noticed this issue till now. Is that a quick fix, or will there need to be rewrites for 1.19? Robin Hoodtalk 05:50, 18 November 2012 (GMT)

I just noticed, all the other map editors are working fine, so it's just the Skyrim map editor that's the issue. Robin Hoodtalk 07:45, 19 November 2012 (GMT)

Changes to Blockers[edit]

Hi Daveh! There was recently a discussion about changing blocker rights that came to fruition. While the initial idea to make all patrollers blockers was shot down, another idea to increase the maximum length a blocker can block someone to 6 hours (versus the current four) came up. Everyone agreed that this was a good idea. While this is low priority at the moment what with the low levels of vandalism we're facing currently, it would shore up our ability to respond to problems in the future. Please consider making this change, as I found that a little bit of extra time would of been appreciated during previous panics. That little bit of extra time should give our admins a much easier window to work with when dealing with issues. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 00:39, 20 December 2012 (GMT)

As mentioned on Dev History, this is now changed on the development wiki. I also changed the default time to 6 hours to make it easy to get to; any patroller or admin can make the same change here once Dave's given final approval and put the change in place. (Yes, technically, I can put both changes in place myself, but I'm still leery of making changes to our production code, for obvious reasons.) Oh yeah, and I also blocked Daveh on the development wiki for 6 hours...cuz how often do you get to block the site owner? ;) Robin Hoodtalk 04:22, 20 December 2012 (GMT)
Dave seems to be enjoying Christmas, so I've gone ahead and put these changes in place. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:06, 29 December 2012 (GMT)

I think the UESP Search function needs to be looked at. I've had this problem since all the way in my Oblivion days but they persist.

Such as when searching for "Alchemy Skyrim" it shows me Oblivion things, Sinderion etc. Searching for "health potion skyrim" it shows me the same thing Searching for "potion Skyrim" it shows me the same thing. All 3 times it never once showed me a page on Potions/Alchemy etc in Skyrim.

Now this is just a recent example, it's hard for me to think of others because my visits have been far between as of late but there certainly are problems.

I'm not sure if it's a technical glitch, that it's taking the words used in the search far too literally or I'm just looking for the wrong thing but I feel it needs to be looked at.

Part of the problem is our use of namespaces, each wiki upgrade seems to affect the custom search on the site. It only broke in August this year again, it was working from at least January 2012. This is being worked on, with details here. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 15:14, 25 December 2012 (GMT)
