Hello!Edit

Hello Alfwyn! Welcome to UESPWiki. It's always good to have new members. If you would like to help improve any of our pages, you may want to take a look at the following links:

If you, on the other hand, would like to spice up your userpage, take a look at this link:

  • Userboxes: near complete list of userboxes, including a guide to make your own

When you're editing, it's always a good idea to leave edit summaries to explain the changes you have made to a particular page, and remember to sign your talk page posts with four tildes ~~~~. Also, the "show preview" button is a great way to view the changes you've made so far without actually saving the page (our patrollers really appreciate it!).

Feel free to practice editing in the sandbox or discuss the games in the forums. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact one of our mentors. Have fun! --AKB Talk Cont Mail 22:05, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Disease TrailEdit

Thanks for adding that. I didn't even know there was a disease trail. Should probably have searched first, though... Wolok gro-Barok 18:51, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

Actually I more or less just "invented" the trail. I wanted the article to have a "real" category (not bugfix related) and add a helpful link at top. I don't think that the trail template does anything else - correct me if I'm wrong. --Alfwyn 19:00, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
To my limited knowledge, no the trail does not actually have any effect except for providing useful links at the top of the page. It adds the page to a particular category, but that can also be done manually. Wolok gro-Barok 19:11, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

CopyrightEdit

Hi, is there a page which discusses the copyright issues regarding the official game guide? Btw, i only contributed numbers (http://www.uesp.net/w/index.php?title=Skyrim%3AMammoth&diff=800337&oldid=799900) which are on many other articles too. i referenced the game guide as a source, but i could have also claimed, that these are direct from the game files. — Unsigned comment by Psychomc (talkcontribs)

I'm not aware of a detailed discussion here what is and what is not plagiarism. And I wasn't that sure whether to revert the edit or not, because it was just a few numbers - but we can't just copy stuff directly from the game guide and it was obvious in that case. --Alfwyn 19:36, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Shout lettersEdit

Thanks for fixing those. I spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out why some shouts were messed up in the table, and it seems to have just been typos on my part that you fixed. Chris3145 05:36, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Actually I don't think I've done something to fix that issue. I did a bit of general tweaking (like not to depend on the fact that the browser has a width of 1000px) and suddenly the Animal Allegiance worked like it should. I think it was some caching issue or such. --Alfwyn 05:41, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm. Maybe you're right. Well, it certainly is working better now for whatever reason. Chris3145 06:06, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Icing the cake on my contrib - Much Obliged!Edit

I'd like to say thank you for making a few tweaks to my detailed-walkthrough submission for the previously-empty Compelling Tribute (Imperial) quest. It was late, and while it's not an excuse, it did cause my lack of judgment. I have no idea why I put a signature in there when I have been using UESP for years and people never put signatures on quest pages, especially. Apologies! I won't be doing that again~ Have a good day!

Deletion ReviewEdit

I just noticed that you nominated {{Br}} for deletion review. Was deleting it controversial in some way? I looked in all the usual places and didn't see anything. If it's not controversial, you can just put a {{Proposeddeletion}} tag on it instead. Robin Hoodtalk 06:59, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

I went ahead and just proposed both the template and DR for deletion since the review would just be a waste of time. If Jak think it is important to keep, then the DR should be reopened. However, I don't think that will be the case. elliot (talk) 07:04, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
That's ok with me, the deletion review may indeed have been a bit more than needed. --Alfwyn 12:33, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

DeletionEdit

Sorry about that, completely accidental. Somehow I copied and pasted the wrong link to my browser and welcomes the wrong user. Sorry again!! SkoomaManiac 16:02, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Not really a problem though, mistakes happen. --Alfwyn 16:04, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Apple PieEdit

Thanks for clearing it up, had Bethesda released the editor already, I would have checked his editor inventory first. Bloomingdedalus 15:36, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

It is not the Thieves' GuildEdit

Both names link to the same redirect page. I am simply trying to clear up mishaps. Also, there is very little support for it being named the Thieves' Guild, whereas support for its name being the Thieves Guild is insurmountable. Reverting my edits just adds needless pages to the disambiguation page, which I am trying to ultimately diminish to a mere distinctive pathway. MethodicMockingbird 18:26, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes, the links are currently not useful. But those two factions are technically different, they have different IDs and probably different meaning. You can look up the factions of a character at CSList if you want. It's the technical membership to a faction we want to document, but the page that is currently linked will need to change. There is a bit of discussion how to achieve this at UESPWiki:Community_Portal/Templates#Skyrim_and_Faction_Template. --Alfwyn 18:33, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I'll not edit the NPC's pages until a method is decided upon. Sorry about the hassle! I'm kinda out of the loop... MethodicMockingbird 18:42, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Removed Arrow GlitchEdit

Hello! I hope you don't mind me poking you for some clarifications about why my arrow exploit was removed from the Glitches page. Your reason was: please read the preface on quest specific glitches, and we are not trying to produce glitches/exploits.

A) I did read the preface, so perhaps I am misunderstanding the quest specific criteria? While you need to be on a specific quest to get the arrows, once you have them, you can use them anywhere in the game. I discovered the glitch completely by accident when I suddenly had exploding arrows on a different quest hours of gameplay later. It was only after some research that I was able to trace it back to "Rise in the East." As anyone hit with a few of the arrows will retain them indefinitely, this glitch can appear with no effort on the player's part anytime they run out of arrows after completing "Rise in the East." So I didn't consider it quest specific.

B) I'm not sure how I produced the exploit? It's in the game, and after getting it accidentally, all I did was figure out how to reliably replicate it. The glitch for the Oghma Infinium is listed, with directions on how to reproduce it, after patching even. Oblivion has its own page devoted to exploitable glitches, such as duplicating items with scrolls. So I'm not sure how the arrows are any different from all these other exploits that are allowed.

As always, I will defer to the judgement of a senior editor who spends a lot of time patrolling these kinds of things! So please don't think I am asking this belligerently. :) But I did want to clarify my reasons for adding it. Thanks for your time! EmmBee 01:35, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

You may be right, this glitch seems to be no more quest specific than the Oghma Infinium one already listed. While we try to avoid exploits on other pages, the glitches page has already a separate section for it. --Alfwyn 16:24, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I see you have already reverted the page, so I went back and added a sentence to clarify that the arrows are available after the quest. Now we'll see how long until it gets patched! Though it's fairly minor as exploits go, so I doubt it's going to be at the top of Bethesda's list. EmmBee 18:59, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

The Heart of Dibella and Dibella StatuesEdit

Hi there, I've just further refined your refinement of the note I added to the quest The Heart of Dibella regarding Dibella Statues. I think it is particularly relevant to mention that a Dibella Statue may be found in such close proximity to the quest (i.e. Broken Tower Redoubt), so have amended the note to that effect. I'm letting you know because I have made this edit so soon after yours that I'm worried it may look like I am either edit warring, upset that you changed what I wrote, or trying to revert your edit back to my original entry :) I can assure you none of these is true, and I am happy to see the article improving :D --Reka 10:17, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

I was generalizing the statement, because of questions on the talk page, but didn't realize that Broken Tower Redoubt is visited during the quest. I think the current version of the note is fine. --Alfwyn 16:31, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

ReversionEdit

Noticed you reverted my edit. I was just trying to avoid redlink and was planning to add the page later. Would you prefer that it would be I add a placeholder and then add bits and pieces that I can? –SkoomaManiac 20:13, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Well, leaving a redlink in this situation for now is probably best. Linking to another page will make it hard to find the link again, redlinks on the other hand can be found with relative ease through Special:WantedPages and will automatically link to the correct page, once created. A bit related, there was a bit of discussion for this faction at Skyrim talk:Nightingale Sentinel. --Alfwyn 20:20, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
I think what should be done in this case then is either move "Nightingale Sentinals" to "Nightingales" or to correct the link to go to "Nightingale Sentinals". –SkoomaManiac
Redlinks are there to spur the creation of a new page. Changing it completely defeats this purpose. elliot (talk) 20:36, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Elliot, a faction page ALREADY EXISTS for the Nightingales. It's called Skyrim:Nightingale Sentinel. The point is it should be one or the other. --SkoomaManiac 20:50, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Incorrect. That page is an NPC page, not a faction page. elliot (talk) 20:53, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

So what happens now...?SkoomaManiac 21:23, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Leveled Gold TableEdit

I found your leveled gold table really useful, and I'm glad someone finally put that somewhere. However, could we change the "wow" category to something more appropriate? It won't look right on a page - imagine reading "You will be given a wow amount of leveled gold." The small, medium, and large labels sound fine, but the wow label will probably be changed, so let's go ahead and change it now. It did make me smile, when I saw it... but then I was disappointed when I saw the amounts. "Wow" implied to me that the 4th amount would somehow be extra-awesome, but it's only a little more than the large amount, - just like large is a little more than medium, and medium is a little more than small. I admit, that "extra-large" sounds awkward, but I would prefer it over "wow." What about "generous"? Great? Hefty? Huge? Massive? (Okay, huge and massive might also be misleading) Bountiful? Copious? Lavish? Extravagant? Just browsing the thesaurus. Any ideas? --Amsuko 03:29, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

The word "wow" is used in the game files. Don't ask me why. ?• JATalk 04:35, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Actually, that's my table. :) What we use in the actual wording of the quests doesn't have to match the parameters to the table, but as Jak said, the wording for the parameter comes from the game. It's on my list of things to do to go through the quests and add it where it's appropriate, but I asked a tester to have a look, and from his results, it looks like the rewards aren't always as simple and straight-forward as the table makes it. In each case, he got either the right amount or more than that, so it may be a case of, for example, 200 + small-leveled gold. This makes verification a fair bit harder, since I can't just look at the in-game lists of when the quest amounts are used - I have to actually go into the quest and see if other amounts are included with it. I had been hoping to get to it last weekend, but as yet I haven't found the time. Robin Hoodtalk 05:29, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
I can't believe the game actually says "wow"! That's really funny. I would vote to keep the wording in that case! Sorry to address the wrong person, I used the feature where you compare different edits in the history and used 'see older edit' to see each change. I must have misunderstood how that works, I looked like person1 created page with almost nothing on it and person2 (marked as Alfwyn) suddenly had a ton of stuff, including the table. I just thought that meant he/she made it. Thanks for the reply. --Amsuko 08:25, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
It does. Which page were you looking at? Robin Hoodtalk 08:53, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Leveled Lists --Amsuko 09:43, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Ah! I take that back then—that's Alfwyn's. I had done a template just over a week ago, {{SRLeveledReward}}, that generates a similar leveled gold table, but for individual quests, and that's what I thought you were referring to. Sorry for the confusion. Robin Hoodtalk 10:54, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Still Alive?Edit

Hey, Alfwyn. Haven't seen you around in almost a week. Hope everything's okay. Robin Hoodtalk 00:22, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Hey, Alfwyn, just noticed you doing some patrolling. Welcome back! Robin Hoodtalk 23:10, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

LetterPicsEdit

Howdy, Alfwyn. I noticed that you revised a few book pages to use the LetterPic template, and I was wondering, did you double-check Oblivion when you made those changes? The one caveat with LetterPic is that, when it's used for a book which appeared in both Oblivion and Skyrim, a fancy letter will be included in both those gamespaces. In a lot of cases, the Oblivion version didn't have a fancy letter. Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 01:10, 19 September 2012 (GMT)

Yes, I did. I checked a few ingame, for the others I just checked with CSList if the image appears in the booktext. In most cases I observed, both versions used fancy letters. For a counterexample, and how I handled it, see Oblivion:The Wild Elves. --Alfwyn (talk) 06:32, 19 September 2012 (GMT)
Damn, I've learned something. You broke my streak. I'll have to try for some other record ;) Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 06:41, 19 September 2012 (GMT)

Protected NPC'sEdit

Alfwyn, I see you adding the Protected stamp but is there a page that you are working on that lists all of the Proteted NPC's or are you just tagging them on their pages? If there isn't already one I may sandbox it and compile them on the wiki.--FubarFrank (talk) 18:35, 28 September 2012 (GMT)

Well, I'm working from the lists at Skyrim_talk:Essential_NPCs#Protected_NPCs that were automatically generated from game-data, but those contain several non-sensical entries too, like Ilas-Tei, who is already dead. Currently I'm tagging them only on their pages, but Category:Skyrim-Protected_NPCs is probably a usable list. --Alfwyn (talk) 18:43, 28 September 2012 (GMT)
Gotcha, I guess I'm just hunting for a project that I can get my feet wet in but not go overboard on. Any suggestions?--FubarFrank (talk) 18:48, 28 September 2012 (GMT)
Hm, on the fact checking side: Can a protected NPC killed by a follower? Can a protected NPC killed by the summons of a player? Those two questions would need testing and documenting. About a table of all protected NPCs, I will be done tagging pages soon, so the category should be complete (well, except a few dynamic cases that may pop up later). Linking to that list may be enough, then again, there is a tabled list for essential NPCs. --Alfwyn (talk) 18:56, 28 September 2012 (GMT)
You got me looking at the Eseential NPC tables and I think that giving the Protected NPC's a table as well would be nice but maybe not... essential. I wouldn't mind doing it though as it would be great practice. Thoughts?--FubarFrank (talk) 21:47, 28 September 2012 (GMT)
Sure, give it a go. --Alfwyn (talk) 12:31, 29 September 2012 (GMT)

I've replied to your message on my talk page about Protected NPCs:

They can be attacked by anything that has an Area of Effect, or simply delays between attacks (I've seen followers die due to groups of NPCs power attacking them or two handed users who may end up attacking when the NPC has entered bleedout). Poison is a very annoying way to lose followers, since Falmer are everywhere and seem to love poisons that are stronger than an NPC's healing rate.
I think that an NPC regains all of their health if they are attacked just as they exit bleedout (as they stagger back and rejoin the fray). I've seen it happen to Jenassa before while testing out followers on Greybeards, but the rest of the time it's just been essential NPCs that have recovered this way. LoftedAphid86 18:39, 1 October 2012 (GMT)

ModnotesEdit

Good catch with the modnotes CSS, Alfwyn. I never noticed it, since I have them enabled in my CSS. I had reviewed all our older CSS code for anything that changed from the default 1.14.1 CSS, but I didn't compare it to the current CSS, since I figured anything that had changed would be bug fixes...it never occurred to me that they might just drop a style altogether. I'll have to run another comparison to see if there's anything else of importance that we might've lost. Thanks for spotting it! Robin Hoodtalk 19:11, 10 October 2012 (GMT)

marker_idEdit

Hey, just noticed a possible error with the marker_id as for Inns, I think you forgot to change the file from OB-mapsicon-Inn to OB-mapicon-Inn and it's causing for the template not to work for the Inns. Just thought I'd point that out, and I'll continue with adding the rest in the meanwhile :) -Helenaannevalentine(talk) 03:55, 15 October 2012 (GMT)

Nevermind haha, I was able to sort it with the help of ABCface :) -Helenaannevalentine(talk) 04:12, 15 October 2012 (GMT)

Load orderEdit

I didn't know that, but it makes sense really. Anyway, thanks for the heads up, and cleaning up my mess. :D DeeDawg (talk) 06:24, 20 October 2012 (GMT)

Yeah, it's a bit unfortunate that we can't give definite IDs for things from plug-ins, since they are different for other people. --Alfwyn (talk) 10:28, 20 October 2012 (GMT)

What, you've never come across the monster Wheat Stack? Nah, but thanks for fixing my copy and paste fail. Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 16:52, 5 November 2012 (GMT)

E-mailEdit

Is your e-mail you have on the wiki currently valid? I e-mailed you last week and haven't heard back from you and need to e-mail you further information. Feel free to e-mail me directly. Thanks! -- Daveh (talk) 00:46, 4 December 2012 (GMT)

Ouch. I got the talk page change email. Anyway, I changed the address to omit a forward step. I just sent you an e-mail, hoping it will get through. --Alfwyn (talk) 13:51, 4 December 2012 (GMT)
Similarly, I've also sent you a couple of mails in the last day or so. Let me know if you need me to re-send them. Robin Hoodtalk 08:27, 5 December 2012 (GMT)

Miraak's Mask?Edit

From the talk page on Miraak and his mask:

"You are right, there are six versions of the mask named "Miraak", three light armor ones and three heavy armor ones. Can the "Miraak's Mask" be obtained (there are several versions of that too)"

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that. Can you elaborate? Spiegel1 (talk) 21:01, 6 December 2012 (GMT)

In the game data I see 6 masks called "Miraak" and 6 masks called "Miraak's Mask", but I have no idea which one is given to the player (both?), and which one is just used by Mirraak. --Alfwyn (talk) 21:05, 6 December 2012 (GMT)
Hmm. Unless someone can extract the data on that, we may have to wait until the PC release to find out for sure. I'm already seeing editor IDs on some of the Dragonborn items, so the answer may well come sooner than later. Spiegel1 (talk) 21:14, 6 December 2012 (GMT)

New forge recipesEdit

Where did you find them! I was wondering what the spider pods were for! I'll stop selling them now :P Are there any new recipes besides the spider ones? Jeancey (talk) 18:14, 7 December 2012 (GMT)

No, there are only spider recipes. And I found them in the game data, so I have no actual clue how to get them or where to use them, sorry. --Alfwyn (talk) 18:18, 7 December 2012 (GMT)
Well, if I find out, I'll let you know :) Since I'm just about to boot up the game, is there anything you would like me to confirm right off the bat? I'm confirming some things for the unique items page, but other than that, I was just gonna go off and explore, do some side quests :) Jeancey (talk) 18:26, 7 December 2012 (GMT)
Basically a lot of stuff needs confirmation, so anything you can document is good. I see you already could clear up the stalhrim selling. Looks like both have access to the merchant chest, but only sell certain stuff from it. --Alfwyn (talk) 18:31, 7 December 2012 (GMT)

DB RefIDsEdit

Quick question - how are you getting the RefIDs for Dragonborn? • JAT 07:47, 9 December 2012 (GMT)

I do a search in my dump of the CELL and WRLD groups for the ACHR form. Not sure if you can get them from the CK (usage report) without crashing it for DB. I could put those dump files (xml) into the dropbox folder, if you think that would be useful to you. --Alfwyn (talk) 15:42, 9 December 2012 (GMT)
You can do it in the CK as well, there just aren't any visuals. Click the releveant cell in the CK, then on the right-hand side, expand the hidden Form ID column and that's your RefID (give or take the Form ID fixup). Robin Hoodtalk 20:21, 9 December 2012 (GMT)
Ah, okay, there it is. Thank you! • JAT 20:26, 9 December 2012 (GMT)

HrodulfEdit

Do you know where his body is located? Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 21:21, 13 December 2012 (GMT)

Hm, in the Solstheim outside cell 10/3. named "Wilderness". Let me dig a bit and I can give you probably a location relative to some map marker. --Alfwyn (talk) 21:36, 13 December 2012 (GMT)
It's south of Hrodulf's House, an amulet of Mara is in the same cell. A bit of coast and a burnt spriggan are in that cell too. --Alfwyn (talk) 22:06, 13 December 2012 (GMT)
Thanks! I thought both Hrodulf and Bjornolfr sounded male, but now I've confirmed they both are. I guess Bethesda included a little homosexual love story. Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 00:17, 14 December 2012 (GMT)

Viewing Dragonborn DataEdit

If I may ask, how have you been viewing Dragonborn data before it is released on the PC? LoftedAphid86 13:09, 22 December 2012 (GMT)

The .esm files from the xbox are the same as for the PC. Texture format is different, so playing or viewing models/cells via CK on the PC is not possible, but extracting basic data is. --Alfwyn (talk) 13:20, 22 December 2012 (GMT)
How could I extract the .esm from the file? LoftedAphid86 13:22, 22 December 2012 (GMT)
Horizon is one tool to extract the files, and this bsa unpacker is capable of opening xbox bsa files (after ignoring the warning about version mismatch). --Alfwyn (talk) 13:36, 22 December 2012 (GMT)
Thanks. LoftedAphid86 13:45, 22 December 2012 (GMT)

Leveled parameterEdit

I'm actually adding the leveled parameter deliberately so that we can hopefully eventually remove the hack of looking to see if "Level" contains the letters "PC", which is not exactly the most logical way to detect a leveled PC. The duplicate parameters were a "woops" and would have been fixed had my other fix not backfired totally. :-/ Robin Hood  (talk) 01:44, 1 January 2013 (GMT)

Dawnguard on Place PagesEdit

What's up with this edit, if you don't mind me asking? Was it decided to exclude DLC locations from place pages? This makes very little sense. We include Hearthfire locations, why not Dawnguard? —Legoless (talk) 23:13, 21 January 2013 (GMT)

So far we don't have DG places on Skyrim:Places, at least none I could find. Initially I just wanted to mark Fort Dawnguard as DG place (hard to do with an automatic list too), but when I saw that the page had no others, I just removed it. But I have no strong opinion on that matter, we could add them all too (and mark them) - but that would make Skyrim:Dawnguard Places a bit pointless. --Alfwyn (talk) 23:19, 21 January 2013 (GMT)
No reason not to include them on other lists, and there's a precedent with Oblivion (e.g. Oblivion:Forts). We also include Dawnguard places on lists such as Skyrim:The Rift. —Legoless (talk) 23:56, 21 January 2013 (GMT)
I don't think it makes the Dawnguard Places page pointless, a lot of people like to look for info on the new stuff added by DLC. I think it would be useful to list all of them on the relevant place pages, especially now that we have that nifty mod parameter. — ABCface 04:28, 22 January 2013 (GMT)
Probably right. Adding them consistently to all pages might be better after all. --Alfwyn (talk) 13:26, 22 January 2013 (GMT)

Dragonborn Solstheim MapEdit

Hi Alfwyn, I've been nosing around the edges of your sandbox 5, and I'm intrigued by what you've been doing there. I'm planning to create a map, similar to this one, but using {{Image Mark}} notation as you're doing. I want a map to display the locations of the various gemstone geodes in Solstheim. I'm keen to collaborate with you on this, being that you've already done so much work on the map of Solstheim. Just wondering what background image you're planning to use for your map? Please help us translate this
Dear Alfwyn,

You are invited to join a team that will be attempting to translate the unknown language on the Word Wall in the 6th Chapter of the Black Book Waking Dreams, the Word Wall that gives the third word ( D3V ) of the Dragon Aspect shout. There are strange, moving words behind the Dragon Language text on the Wall, written in an unrecognisable language. The Dragon Language part of the Word Wall has already been translated. It is the moving words in the unrecognisable language that this project hopes to translate.

This project will be happening in my sandbox, which is open to collaboration by invited team members. The talk page of the sandbox is open to other contributors as well. I hope to see you get involved in the project. I have hand-picked you because you may have previously been involved in Elder Scrolls language translations in the past on the wiki, particularly if you worked on the Magic Script Alphabet or the Elder Alphabet pages.

Kind regards,
Daric Gaersmith
