The Afflicted praying to Peryite
An afflicted challenges you
An afflicted vomiting
Not all agree with Orchendor

The Afflicted are a collection of Bretons 'blessed' by Peryite with a wasting disease. The only thing keeping them alive is Peryite's favor. The Daedric Prince wanted his Afflicted gathered in Bthardamz, ready to do his bidding, but he was betrayed by one of his monks. The monk Orchendor decided that the Afflicted would be better used as his own army. Peryite has decided that the Only Cure for this betrayal is death.

Afflicted have unusually red skin and the ability to vomit poison at close range. The vomiting attack is called Vile Vapor and all Afflicted know the attack, including Orchendor.

  • Shortly after entering Bthardamz you may witness three Afflicted chanting to Peryite:
Afflicted (female): "Peryite, heed our call if you deem us worthy. Our leader, Orchendor, has led us here and for that we are thankful. He has shown us that our suffering is not a punishment, but a blessing."
Afflicted (male): "Yes, a blessing. For many months we have sought your guidance, yet we have heard nothing from you. If we do not please you, give us a sign so that we may understand why."
Afflicted (female): "Yes, a sign. We are lost without your guidance. On the ninth of Rain's Hand our prayers went unanswered, yet here we stand, not faltering in our belief that soon you will show yourself to us."
Afflicted (male): "Yes, show yourself to us. Until that day, we will continue to devote our lives to you and suffer for you."
Afflicted (female): "Yes, suffer for you."
  • In Bthardamz Workshop if you do not attract their attention, a melee fighter may wake up a mage for a conversation:
Afflicted (melee): "I'm sorry to wake you, my Brother. I have a request from Orchendor."
Afflicted (mage): "Yes, what is it?"
Afflicted (melee): "He requests more barrels of ichor to be delivered to the Arcanex tomorrow."
Afflicted (mage): "This is the reason you wake me? I already have Orchendor's request taken care of."
Afflicted (melee): "I'm sorry my Brother."
Afflicted (mage): "Now leave me to my sleep. My strength and patience are waning."
Afflicted (melee): "Yes, my Brother. Forgive me. May the blessing of Peryite be with you."
Afflicted (mage): "Yes, yes, as with you. Now be off."
  • In Bthardamz Dwelling an Afflicted can be heard speaking to her sleeping brother
"Are you asleep? I know you can't hear me, brother. I don't like what we've become. We've been here so long and what do we have to show for it? Orchendor promised a place where we would be accepted and taken care of. He promised Peryite would be present at all times and give us comfort in our suffering. Forgive me for saying this, brother, but I have not felt Peryite's presence. I want out. I want to leave this place. I long for the fresh air of the Reach. This place only makes us sicker. But who am I kidding, I know you wouldn't let me leave, brother. You truly believe in Orchendor and his promises. I know this place will eventually kill us. I have come to accept that. But I will always regret that day I introduced you to Orchendor."
"Keep your eyes and ears open my Brothers and Sisters. Orchendor needs us to keep vigilant while he convenes with Peryite in the Arcanex."

Afflicted TypesEdit

The Afflicted come in many types, the Afflicted at Bthardamz will always be named "Afflicted" but have vastly different stats (any of the NPCs in the tables below).

After you reach level ten two random encounters may happen. At any point, including not having started it, before stage 10 of The Only Cure (you have talked to Kesh) an Afflicted Refugee may appear fleeing Skyrim; he will direct you to Kesh if spoken to. After stage 1 of the quest two Afflicted Remnants may appear; they will try to make their way to Bthardamz but will try to kill you if they see you. Both Remnants are leveled; one is a mage and the other a melee fighter. There is no limit on the amount of times you may see Remnants as their encounter only has a start trigger.

NotesEdit

  • Afflicted inside Bthardamz cannot respawn, since the interior of the ruin is set not to respawn. The ones outside, however, will respawn if you leave for long enough while The Only Cure is still active.
  • The Vile Vapor attack is technically a Dragon Shouts, this means that besides the player, Orchendor is the only Bosmer and the Afflicted are the only Bretons that can shout.
