UESPWiki:Messages

< UESPWiki(Redirected from UESPWiki:Warnings)

This page provides various standard messages that you can add to user talk pages. If you wish to reward a user, see Prizes.

Add the IP address or username to the appropriate message's input field, and click the button. The message will be inserted onto the talk page, and you will then have a chance to modify the message before saving the talk page. You should generally customize the message before saving. Some customizations to consider include:

  • Replace "this IP address" with "this account" if appropriate
  • Add links to specific examples

Welcome

This is a basic introductory message to welcome new editors to UESP. Personalizing the welcome message is highly recommended whenever possible. If you use the template below, the user's name will automatically be added to the message. The main intent behind the standardized message is to make it easier to include useful links in the message.

The welcome message should not be used until an editor has made their first edit, since many users register accounts and never make an edit, and some accounts could be spam bots. This first edit can be a content edit, talk page post, or user page creation. Please do not use the welcome message for anonymous users (users who edit under an IP address rather than an account name). Many anonymous users edit from a public computer or may have a different IP address the next time they log in, which means they will never see the message.

If you would like to help out as a user with some experience, check the User Creation Log and Recent Changes pages regularly. Users who have a blue "contribs" link next to their name but a red "talk" link have not been welcomed. A shortcut to add this message is available at the bottom of their User Contributions page. It's possible that someone posted to their talk page without a welcome, too, so it's a good idea to sometimes check the talk pages of unfamiliar editors. It is never too late to welcome a user with no talk page. Some users make a few edits and get missed until they return years later.

Welcome

Notices

Notices are intended to be used in any situation where there is a chance that an editor is acting in good faith. Remember that the person receiving the message is probably new to the site and unfamiliar with how to do things. Customizing the message is even more important in these cases. In particular, try modifying the "Thanks for your interest" sentence to make it clear that you've noticed what the editor is trying to do.

Notice: Attribution

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thank you for your interest in contributing to the site! However, when adding information to an article it is not appropriate to add your name, as explained on our style guide. The wiki page history keeps track of who did what, making additional author names redundant. You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: Blanking

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thank you for your interest in contributing to the site! You recently removed all the content from a wiki page without providing any reason. Blanking pages is not appropriate. If you deleted this content accidentally, you may want to review Help:Editing to learn about how to edit wiki pages, and you may want to use our sandbox to experiment. If you blanked the page because you felt it should be deleted, it is more appropriate to request deletion for the page, as explained by our deletion policy. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: Deletion

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thank you for your interest in contributing to the site! If you believe that content needs to be deleted from a page, be sure that you leave a brief explanation for the deletion in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. People who monitor the wiki are very suspicious when editors remove content, and may mistakenly revert your edit as vandalism. You may also want to look over our Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: Experimentation

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki. If you would like to experiment with how to edit, you may want to try editing in our sandbox. Making test edits to UESPWiki articles disrupts those pages and forces other editors to spend time making sure everything has been cleaned up. You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: False Information

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki. If you would like to experiment with how to edit, you may want to try editing in our sandbox. Adding false information, or falsifying existing information, to UESPWiki articles disrupts those pages and forces other editors to spend time cleaning them up. You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: First Person

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thank you for your interest in contributing to the site! We have a guideline on our wiki that states that articles should be similar to an encyclopedia in style. In particular, this means that singular first person ("I", "me") and story-telling should be avoided when writing articles. Please try to use a more formal tone that is consistent with the rest of the site. You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: Forum-like posts

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thank you for your interest in contributing to the site! However, keep in mind that we have forums for informal discussion about the games. Definitely feel free to join in! If you still want to help us out here, feel free to improve articles you come across. You may want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Please ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: Nonsense

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki. If you would like to experiment with how to edit, you may want to try editing in our sandbox. Adding nonsense to UESPWiki articles disrupts those pages and forces other editors to spend time cleaning them up. You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: Not Adding Edit Summaries

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki; however, you seem to have been making multiple edits without using the Edit Summary box. We appreciate your enthusiasm, but keep in mind that each edit needs to be patrolled, and edits with no edit summary can make it difficult to ascertain exactly what you are trying to accomplish. Our patrollers really appreciate it when you use these. Thank you. ~~~~

Notice: Not Signing Talk Pages

As a courtesy to other editors, please sign your posts on talk pages and other discussion pages. To do so, simply add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and the date will then be automatically added along with a timestamp when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps readers understand who is involved in a discussion, and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you. ~~~~

Notice: Not Using Show Preview

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki; however, you seem to have been making multiple edits to a page by not using the show preview button, clogging up the Recent Changes in the process. We appreciate your enthusiasm, but keep in mind that each edit needs to be patrolled, so multiple consecutive edits create an unnecessary hassle on those who patrol. So please utilize this feature! You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: Plagiarism

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in improving the wiki. Plagiarizing content, including images, and placing it on UESPWiki is unacceptable, and any plagiarized content will always be removed upon detection. If you are the same user who posted the original content elsewhere, please identify yourself accordingly before attempting to add the content again. UESPWiki encourages you to take your time and produce your own, non-plagiarized content for use on the site, and your help in doing so is appreciated. You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. ~~~~

Notice: Sic

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki; however, you seem to have recently removed a copy of the {{sic}} template. We appreciate your edits, but please understand why it is used. You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or suggestions. --~~~~

Warnings

Be sure that the edit(s) qualify as vandalism. If there is any possibility that the edit was actually made in good faith, use a notice instead. If a warning is felt to have been posted inappropriately, please post on the Administrator Noticeboard and an administrator will make a decision.

Please do not add nonsense to UESPWiki, as it is considered to be vandalism. If you continue to abuse your editing privileges, this IP address will be blocked from editing. Please consider improving the work of others, not harming it. ~~~~

Warning: Nonsense/Obscenities

Please do not add nonsense or obscenities to UESPWiki, as it is considered to be vandalism. If you continue to abuse your editing privileges, this IP address will be blocked from editing. Please consider improving the work of others, not harming it. ~~~~

Warning: Adding False Information

Please do not intentionally add false information to UESPWiki, as it is considered to be vandalism. If you continue to abuse your editing privileges, this IP address will be blocked from editing. Please consider improving the work of others, not harming it. ~~~~

Warning: Spamming

Warnings for spam are generally not needed, unless the links appear to be UESP-related, and they were added indiscriminately.

Adding multiple unnecessary links to an external website is considered to be spamming. Links to UESP-related sites should be added to General:Links. Adding other links solely for the purpose of advertising your website can be considered to be vandalism. If you continue to use the wiki for advertising purposes, this IP address will be blocked from editing. ~~~~

Warning: Open Proxy

This IP address is believed to be an open proxy, zombie computer, or Tor exit node. These are not allowed on UESPWiki and this account may be blocked from editing. ~~~~

Removal of Warnings and Block Messages

Main article: UESPWiki:Blocking Policy

In cases where the editor has acknowledged and made efforts to correct the original problem(s), official notices may be archived (never removed) to a <User talk page>/Warnings page after 6 months provided that there is consensus among the Administrators to allow the move. A link to the Warnings page must also be provided on the talk page in an easy-to-see location, as would normally be done with any other archive. This will allow Administrators to easily view recent history, and know where to look for older history.

System Shortcuts

Shortcuts to several common messages appear in relevant parts of the user interface, as defined in the wiki's System Messages. Specifically:
