Erandur glitched on me (Xbox)Edit

I finished almost all the objectives in Waking Nightmare - drank torpor, released miasma, killed the two NPCs as directed and am now instructed to talk to Erandur again - only he won't speak to me at all! All I have left (I think) is to talk to him and render the skull inert, but now I'm stuck after this lengthy quest. I did try punching him to see if that would help unstick him, but he just fought back. After surrendering, he stopped attacking but still no dialog options available. I can't find anyone with this particular issue yet as it seems he glitches earlier in the quest for most. :( I'm sadly also glitched with the Markarth guard/bounty loop so I guess I'm stuck waiting for updates before I can complete this quest and all of my Markarth objectives. — Unsigned comment by 99.127.132.105 (talk) at 21:41 on 20 November 2011

UPDATE: I'm happy to report that after going back out of the Temple, saving, restarting and loading the game, I was able to fix this issue. When I made it back to Erandur, he (finally) spoke to me. My other issues still remain in Markarth and Belethor's Goods (at least I think it's a glitch - it's always locked now and he is GONE), so I still anxiously await the first update. :) — Unsigned comment by 99.127.132.105 (talk) at 22:59 on November 20, 2011
Confirmed workaround. Nov 24 2011
The above solution of leaving, saving, loading, and returning to Erandur does work for PC — Unsigned comment by 199.126.240.36 (talk) at 08:53 on November 25, 2011
Second confirmed workaround (also PC). Nov 25 2011
Leaving the temple, saving, closing Skyrim, then relaunching and loading the save makes Erandur revert to a neutral state and you can talk to him normally to complete the quest as you see fit. — Unsigned comment by 96.231.45.86 (talk) at 08:57 on November 25, 2011
Third Confirmed (Xbox360) - Left the building, saved, and went back inside and he talked to me just fine. — Unsigned comment by 71.81.40.101 (talk) at 18:14 on December 6, 2011
Fourth confirmed (PS3) - No save or re-load required. All I had to do was exit the building and re-enter. Since Erandur followed me to the entrance (little creeper), he was right there to talk when I came back in. — Unsigned comment by 24.19.209.126 (talk) at 10:03 on December 17, 2011

() Fifth Confirmed (Xbox360) - But i tried it like the PS3 confirmation above. Walked out temple. Ran back in and to Erandur and he spoke to me, i completed the quest. — Unsigned comment by 92.18.206.79 (talk) at 23:58 on 23 July 2012

-Xbox 360-I did the quest with no glitches or difficulties, until just after killing Veren Duleri and Thorek. Like several others mentioned, these two turned on each other. When it came time to dispel the barrier, Erandur just stood in front of it. I can initiate dialogue with him, but to no avail. Nothing seems to affect this, the quest does not proceed. — Unsigned comment by 76.113.114.111 (talk) at 21:11 on 28 February 2013‎ (GMT)

Can't activate the miasmaEdit

During the quest Waking Nightmare on the PS3 I am unable to pull the chain which activates the misama. — Unsigned comment by NeedHelpPlease (talkcontribs) at 00:37 on January 10, 2012

I'm getting the exact same issue, I've got no idea what's going on, i'm not sure if I can just skip this quest phase or not — Unsigned comment by 115.64.216.236 (talk) at 04:53 on 2 June 2012
I found I had this same issue on the PC, but what made this start working for me was to walk away from the pull chain to the doors and large glass window, and then I was able to walk back to the pull chain and it allowed me to pull it. — Unsigned comment by 98.246.37.68 (talk) at 19:15 on 2 December 2012 (GMT)

Yet another glitchEdit

As soon as I drink the torpor, I enter the dream state, but all I can do is look around. I cannot take one step in any direction. I tried this several times, and determined that my game is glitching. Console command 'tcl' doesn't let me move either, so I'm not stuck. I also end up right next to the Skull of Corruption (bottom of stairs), which if I recall correctly isn't the starting point of the 'dream.' I see no articles about people having similar problems.

I do admittedly have a lot of mods installed, but I can't imagine which one, if any, could be causing this.134.176.158.37 09:44, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Tim Bostick

The bottom of the stairs is indeed the start of the dream, where movement is disabled during the conversation about the miasma, after which you run up the tower to hit the switch. It seems your game is having a problem either with spawning the two NPCs or fully finishing the initial script... or both. --Mikeytalkemail 12:52, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
I too am having this problem. Can't move and no one appears. — Unsigned comment by 76.4.30.217 (talk) at 05:00 on 20 April 2012
Same problem here. It is not a plugin, I have completed this quest with another character, all the same plugins were installed and enabled for that character. Just to be sure I disabled all plugins and started from a save at the beginning of the quest and the same thing happens. — Unsigned comment by 69.47.14.145 (talk) at 03:12 on 26 May 2012
I've tried to go through this quest from the very beginning with EVERY plug-in deactivated. And the problem stays. The first buggish quest that makes me eagering to throw "skyrim" away from the window. — Unsigned comment by 188.134.13.219 (talk) at 16:55 on 8 June 2012
Ran into this glitch today. Nothing works, and I've tried just about everything. Disabled all mods and loaded from the start. Tried console commands (disable/enable, kill/resurrect...etc.). I can't even get it to skip past this quest stage because either the quest stage numbers on this page are wrong or something else makes it broken. 92.99.119.89 18:58, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

() I also have this glitch on PS3. I cant do anything with the console to fix it (PS3). I drink the Torpor, go into the dream and no one shows up to talk to me - I'm just stuck, with only the ability to turn my head. I don't have anything installed but the game itself... no modifications or anything. I also started this character after all the patches that fixed many of the crazy PS3 issues. What's worse is that when I just ditch the priest there (because the torpor thing isn't working out), my other quests break. Suddenly I don't have cursors pointing to quest points anymore, and even if the last quest I was working on is a different quest, when I open the log it still automatically chooses "Waking Nightmare." It really is a nightmare. Ugh. ~~ TheIvoryKKitty — Unsigned comment by 173.85.200.141 (talk) at 21:36 on 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Erandur Stuck in Combat ModeEdit

Ok guys I kill the 2 orcs at the bottom of the stairs, and the guy says we gotta go to the library now. So we go to the library, kill the enemies at the top and bottom of the sairs, then nothing. Erendur just sits in combat mode. This is different from other problems people have been having because I'm at the part that i'm SUPPOSED to get the book quest, but never do. This is on pc and any commands or ANYTHING would be greatly appreciatied. — Unsigned comment by 98.166.98.173 (talk) at 20:23 on 3 July 2012

I had a similar problem before even entering the tower. Mid-conversation Erandur and I got attacked by three frost trolls and they knocked him into the injured state so that he was crawling around on the ground. But after killing all three frost trolls and waiting five to ten minutes, he still wouldn't get up, and it also wouldn't let me talk to him at all. I had to reload an earlier save. Thankfully I wasn't too far in the quest yet. --24.191.95.55 02:41, 5 February 2013 (GMT)
I had the same problem, only in the alchemy lab. Exiting and re-entering the tempel worked for me. — Unsigned comment by 91.19.212.236 (talk) at 00:52 on 24 February 2013 (GMT)
Ibid. Just before the skull, just after the boss fight with those two named NPCs. — Unsigned comment by 32.209.67.97 (talk) at 16:49 on 29 April 2017 (UTC)

xbox magical barrierEdit

When you come back from the dream stride I took the soul gem like it said but the magical barrier is still up I continued and came to the skull room and erandur was there but when I compleated the quest I could not leave becaues of the barrier. — Unsigned comment by 166.182.3.221 (talk) at 02:50 on 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Erandur stuck in wallEdit

I did the first two steps 1.follow erandur to the temple 2.speak to him but three is a problem. When i stepped inside for some reason erandur ended up stuck Inside a wall and now i cant press on174.55.142.68 00:17, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

According to an awful lot of players, Erindur can be stuck everywhere inside the temple (mainly because people tend to rush ahead of him) - and a typical solution is to use the wait-feature, exit the temple and reenter, or simply push him out with a shout. Otherwise, reloading an earlier save is the only cure. --Krusty 22:34, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Thorek attacks VarenEdit

On my game Thorek attacks Valen with his lightning magic, every time I have done this quest. I see the conversation between Erandur and Valen, then as soon as fighting starts Thorek turns and fires lightning at Valen. It is totally unprovoked too, it is not like Valen hit him by accident or anything either. It makes this fight so easy for me. 67.189.182.125 01:13, 26 September 2012 (GMT)

I saw this, too. I can't confirm who attacks whom, but one of the bad guys started zapping the other one immediately. I'm a bit over-leveled, so it was already super easy for me and I didn't reload to see if it happened again. Perhaps Thorek was given the wrong faction? MutantPlatypus (talk) 21:24, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
I didn't see if whether or not friendly fire caused this, but yes Valen was attacking Thorek when I was playing on Legendary difficulty.--72.91.149.47 22:58, 23 May 2013 (GMT)Archmage Darium
I added this as a bug. I checked their entries on CSList, but the only faction for both of them is DA16 Player Faction, making them neutral with each other. One of them accidently damaging the other seems like the most likely cause. --Xyzzy Talk 04:08, 24 May 2013 (GMT)

Save Glitch Still in 1.8.157.0.7Edit

I've encountered the last bug in the list on the PC. Anybody else encountering this? Now that the 1.8.157.0.7 is no longer in beta, this is likely to be much more common. This happens for me after I take the soul gem and disable the barrier. I even tried talking to Erandur and letting him start on the way down before saving, but they all cause the game to crash to the desktop with no error message.

It's too hard to roll back an official patch on Steam. I guess I'll just wait for someone to post a different workaround (I'll try completing the entire quest without saving until after the quest has been completed). Hopefully you're allowed to just leave and come back, as Erandur stopped following me and is just waiting by the barrier.

Well, after more testing, I found a simpler work-around: Save immediately before taking the soul gem to disable the barrier. Then, load that save you just made. Take the soul gem from the barrier. Now save again. So far, all saves have been working. MutantPlatypus (talk) 23:48, 6 November 2012 (GMT)

Sigh, it seems I can't reproduce this workaround reliably. If anybody wants, I can provide the saves immediately before drinking the Torpor, and the one immediately after awakening. The one that was made immediately after awakening allows more saves after it, so maybe it would be a good reference against what is broken about saves that cause a CTD. Maybe it has something to do with the timing of the save? The save that is immediately after awakening still plays the coughing sound on the player character character when loaded.
Also, for that save, I enabled player controls and turned clipping off during the dream sequence so I could go right to the Pull Chain to release the Miasma. Then I turned around and decided to let the guy talk to me and give me the quest objective. Then I floated directly up to the Miasma Chain, and noticed not all the fighting orcs and priests had spawned, so I turned off clipping, ran back down a little bit, then came back to the cahin and the orcs and priests had spawned, then triggered the Miasma. Hope this helps someone find an easy workaround. MutantPlatypus (talk) 00:09, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
Unsigh! Success! I have a new workaround that reliably works! I'll post it here and on the official page. If this bug is encountered often, it might be worth moving the bug to the top of the list:
After you pull chain to release the miasma, you are transported back to the real world, able to move around but unable to interact with anything (can't use the "Activate" action, the "E" key on the PC). Get ready to spam Quicksave. As soon as the blur effect on the edges of the screen starts to dissipate, hit the Quicksave button repeatedly and rapidly. All the saving will slow the game down. You should hear your character cough once, awakening from the dream. Continue Quicksaving. Your character should cough a SECOND time. Keep quicksaving. Then, the game will crash. Load up the game again, then just click "Continue" or load up the most recent quick save. You can now make more saves without issues. Continue saving the world as usual. MutantPlatypus (talk) 00:23, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
Wow that was really annoying but your last workaround worked for me. Constantly crashing while saving, it must be the worst bug ever. Thx for figuring out a way to let me continue my level 60 character. --88.73.109.13 19:30, 14 November 2012 (GMT)
Ugh, I'm getting really fed up with continuing bugs in Skyrim, really spoils the game along with inconsistent enemy difficulties. Being unable to finish this quest on XBox360 means I don't think I can become a thane of Dawnstar anymore, which I need to do in order to buy the property added by Hearthfire, which coincidentally is the reason why I installed the patch… unless there's a way to become thane without doing this quest? -- Haravikk (talk) 16:13, 22 November 2012 (GMT)

() Got this bug too with 1.8 patch (PC). For me save just before disabling the barrier does NOT works. Completing quest without saving works fine though. 91.225.199.1 16:17, 25 November 2012 (GMT)

After taking the soul gem to disable the barrier, I went out of the tower to the open air. This caused an autosave (which worked) and all subsequent saves worked as well, so I was able to go back in and finish the quest. Can someone else try this to see if it works for them as it seems a fairly simple workaround. Vlad the Imperial (talk) 22:42, 9 December 2012 (GMT)
After going through this entirely without saves, and exiting the dungeon, then fast travelling to a new cell, I still crashed. This workaround with spamming quicksave, though, did get me past the bug. Thank you. The main page should at least say see talk, even if it doesn't include this workaround there (though I think with 3 confirming it works on PC it should be noted there as a PC workaround). Thank you a thousand times. 76.178.149.38 07:12, 26 December 2012 (GMT)
The above solution (take soul gem, go outside, go back in) worked for me as well. Trying to complete the level without saving did not work, since the game invariably crashed before the end of the level was reached. 174.6.51.17 22:40, 28 December 2012 (GMT)
The attempt I made to use the walkaround (take soul gem, go outside, go back in) fails. My game fails to load the outside world and crashes. I've tried resetting cache and all those methods prior. — Unsigned comment by 70.174.5.122 (talk) at 07:48 on 2 January 2013
Also reporting that this workaround works for the bug. --178.12.57.191 10:15, 4 January 2013 (GMT)
The game crashes for me only after taking the soul gem following the dreamstate, I am able to sucessfully save before taking it yet after the game will freeze. () Will using the setstage command with the argument 0 (resetting the quest completely) fix this bug? — Unsigned comment by 66.253.208.228 (talk) at 00:49 on 8 February 2013‎

One possible reason is that after the dreamstride. the corpses in the temple is somehow bugged. First, they have unequipped all their gears. Second, their bodies float like some spider-webs. It may be possible that the game will fail to recognize the location of these corpses and the saving action will run into a loop or something. By the way, exiting the temple after putting down the barrier will not work, as the loading screen into the outdoor will not end. 61.92.124.61 16:55, 13 February 2013 (GMT)
As other people may have said, save the game before pulling the chain.if you save after the game will crash, and also remember to turn off the auto save too.you can save again when you have left the building.this is also a probvlem on the xbox 360 and playstation 3 versions of skyrim too. — Unsigned comment by 92.28.242.93 (talk) at 01:47 on 28 February 2013

Erandur is stuck in the mead hall..Edit

I am trying to start the "Walking nightmare" quest and I am having difficulty following Erandur.. Mainly due to the fact that HE WONT LEAVE THE BAR!! I am not sure if it is a glitch and he is stuck or if he just really likes his ales.. I have tried waiting, restarting from a previous save point but nothing seems to be able to coax him out of the hall.. I have even killed him several times out of pure rage.. I have found the temple (no thanks to him) but it seems the quest will not start without his presence.. Someone, anyone, Please help me! — Unsigned comment by 68.104.21.173 (talk) at 21:48 on 19 November 2012 (GMT)

On what platform are you playing? Did you receive the quest objective to talk to him? Did you talk to him, or try to? --JR (talk) 18:29, 22 November 2012 (GMT)
Have you ragdolled him? The Bug section says that it can help. Also, make you talked to some of the townspeople as well. Br3admax (talk) 18:35, 22 November 2012 (GMT)
Hello I just fixed him from being in the hall...not sure exactly what I did but first I kept punching him..then I just repeatedly talked to him and exited the convo over and over ..basically button mashing like crazy...then I got on the bar and wedged between him and the bar and simply pushed him forward by running against him...it worked :) he started walking. Hope it helps . Playing on PS3.

walking nightmareEdit

i am having a problem doing this quest, well i can do everything that it says but when i try and leave through the door it crashes. ive tried saving half way so i dont have to keep replaying the same mission and it crashes, what do i do????? 80.247.18.100 00:39, 15 January 2013 (GMT)

I had the issue of after the dreamstride. The game would freeze whenever I tried to continue on after collecting the soul gem. To fix this I reloaded an older save from before I entered the tower with Casimir. Did not save once and removed the auto saves. I finished with no problems. This was on a xbox as well.

Freezes during saveEdit

They need to tell you right at the beginning of the page that this quest is buggy.... That whole game freezes when it saves is not a little glitch and a couple words at the bottom of the page aren't good enough warning.... — Unsigned comment by 24.237.37.27 (talk) at 14:15 on 1 February 2013 (GMT)

I had the same problem with my game on Xbox 360. I made it to the part right after you kill the two NPCs at the end of the quest, right before Erandur deactivates the barrier, and felt that it was a good place to save since I had heard that the quest was very buggy. It instantly crashed. I even tried the workaround that someone mentioned, the one where you drink the Torpor, pull the chain to release the Miasma, and then save before picking up the soul gem, and it still froze, so I didn't even get the option to dashboard and reload the save. I didn't even think about leaving the tower and going back in to see if that would work. Oh well. In the end I just completed the quest without saving because I was sick of having to reload to before drinking the Torpor so many times. As soon as I left the tower I tried saving and it let me (finally). At least I don't have to deal with that buggy quest anymore. --24.191.95.55 02:41, 5 February 2013 (GMT)
After about 2 hours of screaming and cursing the 360, I used Become Ethereal shout and walked calmly through the barrier. Dialog proceeded as normal, but a few of the NPCs did not spawn. Vaermina's Torpor is now sitting in a place of honor in Breezehome between Pelagius' Hipbone and Nettlebane, where it does no harm. 15 February 2013 — Unsigned comment by 209.169.24.3 (talk) at 05:44 on 16 February 2013‎ (GMT)
it does the same thing on the xbox 360 and playstation versions of skyrim, donot save untilll you are outside again (that also means you must turn off the auto save as well). — Unsigned comment by 92.28.242.93 (talk) at 01:39 on 28 February 2013‎
I have this issue as well on Xbox360; I was able to save successfully right before drinking the torpor, but every time I try to save afterwards, it freezes and crashes the whole system. This includes auto saves as well. I have also had it crash without saving after the dreamstride, just freezes and crashes for no apparent reason. I have so far done the dreamstride portion of this quest a total of six times and have not been able to successfully complete it once! As another user has said, this is NOT a small issue, my game is updated with all the latest patches and clearly whatever the issue is with this quest, it was NOT fixed by the latest patch, at least not for the Xbox. I agree that this page could use a warning about this quest at the top to help save others the grief that we have had in Nightcaller Temple. Will I ever get out of there? Who can say... Clues about saving glitchEdit

I have found that after waking from the dreamstride, there are a few interesting things happening. 1. If the corpse has been striped naked and looted everything, the original items that the character carried will respawn in the corpse, without equipping. 2. All the corpses are now floating like some spider-webs. 3. Reanimating them will not be successful. A corpse casted with necromancy will be wrapped with some blue lights and it never stands up. Once he is in this state, conjuring up an atronach will not void the necromancy. If another spell is casted to the blue-wrapped body, it will disintegrate into ash. 4. Exiting the temple is not possible. I believe that the saving glitch may be a result of these bugged corpses. I am not sure yet, as my character cannot turn one or two of them into ash piles as she doesn't have the strong-enough spell. Joshua.yathin.yu (talk) 17:16, 13 February 2013 (GMT)

Able to walk through barrier.Edit

Has anyone else had this happen? Out of curiosity, I walked up to the barrier to inspect it and was able to just pass through it without incident. After this, I was able to just pick up the soulgem which disabled the barrier and continued as if I had gone through the library and drank the torpor. A side-effect to this method was that the library could thereafter not be accessed. Nosvertu (talk) 05:58, 24 February 2013 (GMT)

freeze bug includes autosavesEdit

I think it might be worth mentioning somehow that the problem with freezing during or after the dream sequence can also occur on an auto-save. The main reason I personally think this should be included is that by default it auto-saves when you open the character menu, if you haven't made a save recently, so my game froze just because I opened the menu to change weapons. As such, someone going through this quest might want to go into Start > Settings > Gameplay and disable character menu auto-save. - 70.72.16.171 14:30, 26 February 2013 (GMT)

Erandur stuck as essentialEdit

When the descision point is reached, and I get the objective to kill Erandur. He just goes into bleedout and won't die. Even when I used the setEssential 0 command on his baseID (2427d), the isEssential command still printed out 1 and he still won't die. Any advice?

No soul gem to disable the barrier?Edit

Ok, I've gone through drinking the torpor, the pulling the chain to release the miasma. I wake up in front of the same chain, and there is no soul gem to disable the barrier. No soul gem at all. I can't complete this quest. — Unsigned comment by 173.30.67.151 (talk) at 23:00 on 5 May 2013‎

Are you playing on a PC or a game console? If on PC, there are a variety of ways to address this. If on a console, there is a bug fix in the article that may help: To bypass this, proceed to the last room with the skull on your own. Erandur should be waiting for you there. Make sure you speak with him straight away. If not, he will simply go back behind the barrier. If that doesn't work, you may have to load an earlier save and start the quest over, if possible. --Xyzzy Talk 23:13, 5 May 2013 (GMT)
I had the same problem; no soulgem. I use the Harvest mod; I wonder if it was picked up too early.
Anyway, the way I solved this problem was that I stand on the other side of the barrier (do not go down or else Erandur won't trigger events correctly!) and used the SetStage 180 command. From that point on, I could follow Erandur and complete the quest correctly. — Unsigned comment by 192.0.170.62 (talk) at 00:48 on 5 July 2013 (GMT)

CTD when moving into Dawnstar after completing the quest (and murdering Erandur)Edit

I finished the quest without problems, murder the priest.

Then I returned to the town. Everything was okay until I wanted to go near the lake. Segfault each time.

I told my follower to quit, then re-hired directly after and the crash does no longer occur. So, yeah, as suggested, there's something fishy with the follower management in this quest.

Still crashing to desktop after drinking torporEdit

I am playing on version 1.9.32.0.8 and I can confirm that saving the game after drinking the torpor and releasing the miasma still causes that godforsaken crash to desktop. Finishing the quest, leaving the temple, and fast travelling elsewhere allowed saving as normal. Theomniadept (talk) 18:53, 6 September 2013 (GMT)

Do you have anything else installed (mods, DLC)? I guess you're on PC since you mention CTD.
Since the 1.9 upgrade my XBox has had no problems with this crash in the quest. Before 1.9 saving after the miasma release, even after fast travelling, was strictly forbidden. --Morrolan (talk) 23:14, 26 September 2013 (GMT)
I can confirm that I have saved succesfully, on the PC, after releasing the miasma. --Caralampio (talk) 8 November 2013
Reconfirmed for save after the miasma. The entire quest ran like clockwork. Tested save/load during the Dreamstride portion, no problem. Lmstearn (talk) 06:01, 22 November 2013 (GMT)

Conformation of CTD after Drinking TorporEdit

I am using version Skyrim 1.9.26.0.8, 170+ esm/esp and Extensible Follower Framework v4-0-0 Beta and 22 followers "relaxing" at various locations around Skyrim, none in tow during this quest so dismissing them is NOT an option. The only way I was able to negate the CTD was to use TCL in console and walk through the barrier, this unfortunately reduces the enemies to only two but allows player to at least the complete quest. — Unsigned comment by Chb000 (talkcontribs) at 19:42 on 1 January 2014‎

In Skyrim, mods = crashes. Looks like you found a way to run the mods you want and still bypass the inevitable code conflict. However, since you are using mods, your input doesn't help confirm or deny that the unmodded game may still crash during this quest, post-patch. --Xyzzy Talk 23:00, 1 January 2014 (GMT)
The problem with this quest is that before and after (especially after) the dreamslide it's trying to enable and disable twenty million different things in the same cell at once while running twenty million more scripts in the background all at the same time. Something that most modders can tell you is a major no-no, since this puts a whole lot of strain on resources (which are already severely stunted by it being a 32bit program.) This is why most mods that do this sort of thing use two separate cells for this. Yes the load times are annoying, but load times > crashes due to the game getting overloaded and saying "f*** it!!". Oh well, the workaround works, plus I found a way to get the enemies back by using Prid C4DB9 followed by enable. If you feel bad having to cheat to get your way through, don't worry: you're not really missing much anyway. Some pointless exposition and an even more pointless run through the lower part of the level. --Rylasasin (talk) 14:57, 23 April 2014 (GMT)

New Glitch: Erandur totally MIAEdit

Went to Dawnstar and now I can't get the quest going for love nor money since Erandur is no where to be seen. The console commands to either move my character to him or to bring him to me do nothing (according to both he is in the inn). The only command that works is the resurrect command but the quest will not trigger if I do that. StormDancer46 (talk) 21:38, 12 January 2014 (GMT)

With Erandur's ID selected (by using the command prid 24280), I would try the disable command followed by the enable command, or try resurrect. --Xyzzy Talk 22:42, 14 January 2014 (GMT)
The enable/disable did nothing unfortunatly. The resurrect command got Erandur there but I still couldn't initiate the quest. StormDancer46 (talk) 19:34, 18 January 2014 (GMT)
He's not the only one; sometimes the bard is instantiated outside the walls of the cell. This may be a game engine bug, possibly with the navmesh. I've had to go back to a previous save before entering. It's random.

Erandur fails to turn the Vaermina statue purple to reveal the doorway into the TempleEdit

When entering Nightcaller Temple, Erandur goes forward to the statue of Vaermina behind the lectern. He fires flames at the statue, then stops as nothing happens to the statue, he moves around aimlessly then teleports away. Unfortunately the doorway has not gone purple and been revealed. Checking what has happened to other gamers, I ensured that all auto-saving was disabled and didn't save once inside; I allowed Erandur to go first, yet still this happens. Any suggestions? — Unsigned comment by 86.22.190.126 (talk) at 19:19 on 21 April 2014 (GMT)

No one appears to have found a way to make it work the way it should. There is a workaround for PC. Open the console, select the carving, and type 'disable'. This will make it disappear. After closing the console, once you're through, I'd advise you to record or remember the object's reference ID for when you leave, if you don't want it to be gone forever. To make it reappear, type 'enable' in the console. 97.125.239.20 04:19, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

That dang barrier on xb360Edit

Hey so I have been havin some trouble. So I got through the temple, found the book, drank the torpor, but every time I pull the chain to the miasma and deactivate the soul gem, that barrier won't go down. I can still go to the skull and do the whole end sequence, but I can't get out cause the barriers up. I've check a couple websites, and every comment like this doesn't have an answer. If anybody is out there right now, some help would be much appreciated.

Double lootEdit

After the Dreamstride scene, all corpses are being reset and can be looted again (even though the mouseover will say "empty"). (at least on PC, been that way for the last few patches already). Should this be listed in the Bugs section? WooShell (talk) 19:07, 26 March 2015 (GMT)

Circumventing the quest like a bossEdit

I thought suffering through this quest on Xbox was bad enough, but playing it in heavily-modded Skyrim for PC is a waking nightmare (yuk yuk). Even with no followers and never saving (and blessedly no performance-related crashes), I kept getting back outside and crashing on save. Didn't matter where I was or what I was doing, anytime I tried to save my game upon completing the quest, instant CTD.

After half a dozen attempts, this is how I ultimately got through it: (1) walk into the temple behind Erandur (2) CC setstage da16 197 (3) immediately shank Erandur (4) TCL to get through barriers (5) grab Skull of Corruption (6) book it outside and save. 173.2.52.213 22:58, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Is he dead?Edit

On PS3 I murdered got up to the part where I am supposed to kill errand ur, which I did, but the game says that I still have to kill him . I have tried exiting the temple and reentering but it doesn't work.211.30.41.31 05:01, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

It seems like you have encountered a bug these pages have not documented yet. Does it happen each time you try from a previous save? What happens if you reload and chose the option to let him live at that point? —MortenOSlash (talk) 14:28, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Friendly invader (PS3)Edit

On my recent playthrough, I tried to loot an orcish invader, which had not awaken yet, and I got the dialogue for feeding or talking (which means that they technically really are asleep,) since I am a vampire. I fed once, and then I talked to him, and I got the option fo ask him to make me a blood-kin, but he, of course, refused with the generic response.

After exiting the conversation, he attacked me and killed me quite easily, actally (and I've not had any troubles with the other orcs, playing on easy as I do, but I digress.)

Anywho, could it be that he didn't hear me coming, since I am wearing boots of muffling, and Erandur missed him, and can anyone confirm this bug?

81.231.143.37 06:28, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

I don't think it's a bug. The invader orcs are asleep, so it makes sense that you can interact with them the way you can with other sleeping NPCs. The boots of muffling could indeed have let you get closer without waking him, and I don't think Erandur wakes the Miasma sleepers at all. I think whether the Miasma sleepers awaken depends entirely on their awareness of your character. Also, there appears to be a delay of a second or two while they're awakening in which they are not hostile. None of what you are descrbing sounds uncharacteristic to me.24.159.122.98 07:34, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

Won't stop crawlingEdit

okay so this is at the point where he is supposed to dispel the barrier around the skull but he just keeps sitting there and crawling around in the injured position. what do I do?

Erandur stuck at the wall at the beginning after entering the templeEdit

This is an update & possibly confirmation of this bug from the main page (marked with a ?) :

> Sometimes Erandur may not do anything to remove the illusion [to get into] the entry hall ?

> To fix this you have to hit him a few times and the illusion will be removed when he casts his flame spell.

Playing on PS4. Came to the temple earlier in the game & cleared it, so no skeevers present and the chest was empty. Entered the temple before him, noticed he didn't follow, went back out & spoke to him. We both came in, but then Erandur just stands in front of the wall casting a spell at it. You can't speak to him 'This person is busy'. . . Fixed it by shouting Unrelenting Force at him a couple of times. He went flying across the room & it seemed to wake him up. He had dialogue again. Spoke to him about the miasma, and suddenly the wall was down and the purple veil appeared.

EDIT: Playing on, soon encountered a similar problem after following Erandur to the library. The quest marker is pointing at his head with 'speak to Erandur' prompt, but unable to speak to him. Eventually solved it by dismissing my follower (as suggested above for other bugs) and returning. Erandur was on the stairs in the library and speaking normally again. No further problems after that.
