Hostile upon release?Edit

When I released him he began to attack me again and I was unable to speak to him. I'm playing on PS3. — Unsigned comment by 184.166.78.129 (talk) at 02:26 on 4 December 2011

same thing happened to me on Xbox though68.231.197.3 17:56, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Same thing happened to me on X-box. (I reckon its because I stabbed him a few times after he was captured), but I fixed it by releasing him and letting the fight break out, and then entering Dragonsreach castle, and then when I came back out, he was able to be talked to and ready to be mounted. — Unsigned comment by Truerien (talkcontribs) at 03:48 on 9 February 2012
Playing on PC, same thing happened. Advancing to stage 60 prevents any further conversation with Ohdaviing. Also had to use the moveto player command while trapping him. Exiting and waiting does nothing. — Unsigned comment by 174.89.69.137 (talk) at 22:02 on 27 June 2012

Second PuzzleEdit

I tried multiple times at the second puzzle and the only thing that worked for me was changing the rings before killing the Draugr Death Lord. — Unsigned comment by 208.96.104.212 (talk) at 10:32 on 5 December 2011 (UTC)

First puzzle brokenEdit

The first puzzle in the temple is broken for me. The 1.3.1 patch might have broken it, but unlikely. I had the TCL through the gate. The second one works. --85.131.79.92 09:00, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Snake-Snake-Whale did not work for the snake door as indicated on the page. I tried Eagle-Snake-Eagle and it worked. (Magskall 02:22, 31 August 2012 (UTC))

Word WallEdit

I added this to the main article on Skuldafn's page because I felt it was worth mentioning without a player missing it because it was under the "Discussion" tab, but since this is more so pertaining to the quest I will leave it under this, as it is not a vital part of the quest.

There is also a Word Wall, for the second word of Storm Call, "Wrath". It is located within the "second chamber", (put in quotation marks because there are two inner sections of the temple, both named Skuldfn Temple) of Skuldafn Temple, not to be confused with either of the two watch towers, Skuldafn North Tower and Skuldafn South Tower, though their names are completely misleading as both towers are to the southern-most edge of the map; The "North" tower is actually in the south-east corner and the "South" tower is actually in the south-west corner.

As for the Word Wall itself, it is located within the Temple itself, further to the north up several sections of stairs. The player enters a door to "Skuldafn Temple", upon which after the second section of the temple, before the player is allowed to enter back outside, is the Word Wall, in the final large room. It can be difficult to miss as it does not appear to play the traditional music or make the same general noises when approached until directly in front of the word (Needs conformation, happened on two different profiles for my 360). — Unsigned comment by 50.103.46.55 (talk) at 05:52 on 24 December 2011

Dragons on pillarsEdit

I'm playing on pc dragons didn't attack me. I am level 35. Is this feature or bug? Need confirmation. — Unsigned comment by 85.217.16.176 (talk) at 16:59 on 4 January 2012

I think it's a bug. There's no reason for them to be friendly.
In my game, whenever I hit them they simply got up flying and immediately roosted back on the pillars, sometimes making short circles around them.
I managed to kill both:
• The first one I killed was the one at the right, that was a frost dragon. I shoot him a bunch of fire destrucion spells and, when his health dropped to zero, he got up and flew to the nearest place in which he could land. When he landed, he died.
• The second one was an elder dragon. He had much more health and it regenerated quite fast, so I needed a lot of shots to "kill" him. The problem with this one was that, every time he ran out of health, he just stayed on the pillar until it regenerated a little. I tried to kill him while he was flying, but he still continued rising up and returning on the pillar. Sometimes, a bug happened. He begun spiraling downwards, even through the ground; after some seconds, he reappeared going upwards, until he reached, I guess, the top of the sky and begun flying normally, still returning on the pillar.
I tried many times with the shout "dragonrend" to make him land somewhere else, but it didn't work. At a certain point, I don't know why, he landed on the floor. It was still a bug, because his posture was the one he had while he was on the pillar (it was quite weird). Fortunately, he didn't get away from there, so I could reach him. When I got near, he said "Speak, if you have aught worth the listening.". I tried to sneak-attack him and to blast him with magic, but he didn't die. At the end, I tried to attack him frontally with a knife (I'm sure any weapon but a bow would have done the same thing) and a finishing move started. When it finished, the dragon crumpled onto the floor and died.
It is to notice that the dragon never attacked me (he wasn't signed as an enemy; only for an instant every time he got up from the pillar) and that, in the procedure, my destruction ability went from 82-83 to 99, nearly 100 (it got there against alduin). I used expert-level spells. Cridus 20:10, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Didn't attack me either, I don't think it's a bug though. Remember, Odahving says that some have been questioning Alduins right to rule, I took it as these two dragons wanting to see me test Alduin.--RumblePen 23:10, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
Whoops, I should have thought about it... but in the end, it has been very helpful for my Destruction. I don't regret it very much, asd. Cridus 07:45, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Followers and The EyrieEdit

In the "Notes" section, the author recommends dismissing all followers prior to hitching a ride on the dragon. This is not necessary. I had one of the buggiest followers, Ilia, with me right before heading out on Odahviing, finished all the way through "Dragon Slayer," and after the long talk with Paarthunax at the end, she was in Whiterun when I arrived via fast-travel. Has anyone found glitches associated with other followers? If so, which ones?Black jack king 12:04, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

I currently have a follower (can never remember his name though. Though I'm at Skuldafn now. I'll leave a comment when I can to say whether he's dissapeared or not --Draconeo 16:03, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Finished the quest, and after listening to the dragons rattle on, I fast travled to Ivarstead, and my follower, Stenvar, was there with me like usual :3 Hope this helps anyone --Draconeo 17:30, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Finished in Sovengard, then after chatting with the dragons at the Throat, I walked down to High Hrothgar. When I entered the building, my follower (J'zargo) came running in the front door to greet me.70.176.10.9 07:32, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Has anyone noticed...Edit

How the door leading from Skuldafn Temple, to the upper area of Skuldafn (where the portal is), is a large wooden double door, but if you turn around it's a small decorated metal single door. I can't say I noticed it anywhere else, but currently I'm having to use that door as a safezone from the Dragon Priest Draconeo 15:55, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Good observation, that may be something that gets added to the page eventually.RIM 16:56, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Diamond ClawEdit

Instead of a Leveled Draugr holding the Diamond Claw for the puzzle door, I had an unamed dragon priest. (level 76) — Unsigned comment by 119.225.247.247 (talk) at 05:42 on 8 February 2012

You're right. At level 60 and above, there's a chance of getting a dragon priest instead. Robin Hoodtalk 05:39, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

What happens now?Edit

Guys: I am level 40 now and I am looking for all the masks and found out there was one in Skuldafn. I found this out after I used I finished "The World-Eater's Eyrie" quest. My question is can I call the dragon and go back to the dungeon? — Unsigned comment by 99.195.147.240 (talk) at 01:19 on 1 March 2012

No. If you are on PS3 or Xbox, you can do nothing about it. If you are on PC, you can use the console to teleport to skuldafn (I don't know the code). Cridus 13:09, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
The code to get to Skuldafn, specifically to place you close to the Dragon Priest, is 'coc skuldafn02'. This will place you near the door that opens to the area where the Dragon Priest resided. Keep in mind that his body, or any remains whatsoever, may no longer be there. GodRaine 1.1.21.0 PC 03:30, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Useless BugEdit

There's a bug listed, 9th in the list (as of this writing) that discusses the soldier holding the gate simply saying "Wait. I know you ...". I would wager that this is not a bug, and simply a prioritization of dialogue over the questline for that NPC if the player has a bounty in Whiterun. Anyone else? GodRaine 1.1.21.0 PC 03:32, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

I suspect it might actually be a manifestation of the currently-third bug listed here for female players. For now, I'm leaving it, pending a more thorough Construction Kit investigation. Robin Hoodtalk 06:40, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Was the dragon priest at half health for everybody?Edit

When I got to him he was already damaged quite a bit.--RumblePen 23:12, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't see anything in the Creation Kit that would suggest he's damaged in any way. Robin Hoodtalk 01:49, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed. I'm on my sixth play through and each time he has had about 50% of his health missing. On the other hand it seems to only happen when you let him take his staff. KingK 18:32, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
You must have used Storm Call shout, right? I used it and he was damaged be4 I met him.

Is this a bug?Edit

"Sometimes the Whiterun Guard who releases Odahviing dies in battle, meaning that the player must pull the chain themselves to continue." He's not essential, to my knowledge, so why should it be a bug for him to die? Vely►Talk►Email 22:04, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Workaround for first puzzleEdit

No matter what I did, how many previous saves I loaded, the door wouldn't open. I wound up taking a wooden plate, dropping it, picking it up, placing it in front of me, and walking right into the gate. Wooden plates often let you walk through walls. When I was right up against the gate with the plate, I used Whirlwind Sprint. It pushed me through. Not sure if this works for everybody or if you need the plate. Waltz 21:20, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Riding Odahviing Animation in Skyrim Creation KitEdit

I am working on a mod that allows the player to ride dragons, but I'm pretty terrible at making animations from scratch. I need an animation for when the player is mounting the dragon, and the animation in the this quest when the player mounts Odahviing would be perfect. I was wondering if anybody knew how I could copy the papyrus script from that animation so that I could use it for my mod. And by the way, if this isn't where I'm supposed post a question like this then just let me know and I'll make sure not do it again. Thanks for all the help! 3rd room puzzleEdit

In the third room I can't open the door and I am entering the right code from the diamond claw. Fox,moth, dragon. — Unsigned comment by 76.8.221.183 (talk) at 00:53 on 8 January 2013

Dead ThrallEdit

So you can't take any normal follower with you, but what about dead thralls? Do they appear at the destination, and if not: Where do their corpses go?

Bugs CleanupEdit

  • Using Dragonrend on Odahviing either before or while he is picking up the guard may cause the game to freeze.
  • Sometimes Odahviing may become hostile upon release, and will fight with you as well as any NPCs in the area. This may be caused by attacking Odahviing while he is restrained, though he does not react.
    • Sometimes it is possible to fix this by releasing him, entering Dragonsreach, and then re-entering the area, whereupon Odahviing will be calmed and able to talk once more.
  • The two dragons on top of the pillars can freeze and just fly circles. This makes them very hard to kill because they may simply take off after sustaining damage, circle a bit, and return to their perch, by which time their health has been mostly regenerated. Dragonrend only causes the same effect, and they won't actually come to 'ground'. If you kill them, their bodies stay frozen on top of the statues and they keep growling when you hit them with magic.
  • In the section of tunnels where the frostbite spiders are, it is possible to kill the small frostbite spider beyond the web door. If this happens, the web door can be opened by casting the Unrelenting Force shout at it and then tearing it down as you would with a given weapon.
  • When the guard opens Odahviing's trap, be careful not to accidentally attack Ohdaviing. Doing so will cause a glitch wherein you couldn't talk to Ohdaviing. Resulting for the guards to attack him, forcing him to attack you until you weaken him. When he's weakened, he'll sit and stop taking damage, there will be no "Speak" option. Don't mind trying to find the spot for the option because he'll just regenerate his hp and continue his attack endlessly. When this glitch happens, load an autosave and redo the lure again.
  • If you encounter a bug that prevents Odahviing from flying you to Skuldafn temple, setting the quest to stage 60 will place you where he was supposed to land.
  • If you take the path that leads west, and successfully manage to bypass Skuldafn Temple, Nahkrin may spawn with 3/4 of his health, and will not attack you regardless of whether or not you hit him.

These bugs have sat unconfirmed long enough. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:24, 17 August 2013 (GMT)

Flying the DragonEdit

I'm having a problem where, upon mounting Odahviing, he and my character fly away without the camera and I'm left looking at myself fly away. Not sure what happened — Unsigned comment by Trevswan84 (talkcontribs) at 20:52 on 11 December 2013

Well, the camera is static once mounted Odahviing, you two simply fly away out of sight, and then Skuldafn should load... Maybe you simply didn't let the scene play out? ;-) -- SarthesArai Talk 21:00, 11 December 2013 (GMT)

i need helpEdit

Guys, i finished the quest and all, but the last objective, that is reaching alduins portal remains unfinished in my journal, can someone suggest something please. — Unsigned comment by 27.49.100.4 (talk) at 10:56 on 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Is the quest marked as completed in your journal? As in it's grayed out and no longer giving you an objective marker? Or is the objective marker still present? If it's the former, I wouldn't worry about it, since it won't affect the game in any tangible way. If it's the latter, you might be able to fix it with console commands, assuming you're playing on PC. If you're on console, you may have to just reload a save. Keeping the StaffEdit

Per the note(s) on the page, is it possible, after killing a Nahkriin who has removed the staff, to replace it, then use slow time to remove the staff and get to the portal. This would be the second closing of the portal, as the note only says for the first opening and I'm not sure how quick it closes after you reopen it. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 16:37, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

The key to getting and keeping the staff is getting up next to him at the top of the stairs where the staff is poked into the seal thingie before he says his line and pulls it out, then staggering him. When his "I am going to grab the staff" action is interrupted by his "stagger" animation, this inserts a small delay (about half a second to nearly a second, it varies) between Nakhariin pulling the staff out and the script that closes the portal kicking in and disabling the hit box that teleports you into Sovnguarde. There are several ways to do this, the most common one mentioned elsewhere online is "get up next to him any way you can before he can grab the staff (slow time, whirlwind sprint, etc), beat him down to one hit point, let him grab it, then instantly finish him, loot him, and jump in before it closes." However, if he isn't staggered in this process of this beat-down (or you just one-punch him), the script works as intended, he grabs the staff, and though it takes the portal about three seconds to close, the hit box for the entrance is disabled the instant the staff is grabbed. Thereafter, once the portal is closed (hit box disabled), you have to put the staff into the seal to open it again, and it can never be removed once inserted. So, you have to loot him and jump in before the portal closes, and there just isn't enough time unless you stagger him. Any player action that forces him to play any animation other than the ones planned by the scripts will insert a small delay in the time between "Nakhariin grabs the staff" and "the hit-box for the portal is disabled," giving you the chance to stomp him, loot the staff and jump in. I've gotten the staff many times now, and that's the only way to do it. 174.28.237.24 00:42, 3 November 2019 (GMT)
It took me a few tries but basically all I did was normal sprint to get between him and the staff (he was already up the steps), then beat him down until he was almost dead. This didn't take long because I was pretty high level melee character at this point. As soon as he grabbed the staff I finished him off, looted, turned and jumped. I hadn't read this when I attempted to get the staff, so I didn't pay attention to stagger, but it's very possible. --68.41.30.4 17:05, 14 February 2020 (GMT)
