Skyrim talk:Illusion Spells

Fade OtherEdit

Where is Fade Other obtained? I have 75 illusion and bought invisibility from the guy at the college. I assumed I could buy Fade Other if I could invisibility since its cheaper to cast, but he doesn't have it. Ice 11:38, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

I have 100 illusion now I've done the master quest and I still cant find this anywhere. Ive posted on every game forum and answer site and noone is helping. Cant this just be checked on PC or something if its actually in game?? Ice 05:04, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
As far as I can tell:
  1. This page and some pages at segmentnext.com mention the spell, describing it as
"Target is invisible for 30 seconds. Activating an object or attacking will break the spell."
  2. The Prima Official Game Guide does NOT mention it.
  3. ElderScrolls.wikia.com does NOT mention it.
  4. The author of the article has provided a hexadecimal ID, but the official Creation Kit is not out yet.
Based on this evidence I would speculate that it is an unimplemented spell whose address is accessible by file reading tools available to some editors who dabble in the arcane art of modding. Although it is difficult to prove something does not exist I would bet on the basis of your in game experience (which is supposed to be the evidence we use) that it doesn't. One could also speculate that the spell was coded but never added to any NPC's list or to a Spell Tome, for reasons known only to Bethesda. Consequently, I will leave a caveat under the "where to get" column. Kalevala 20:12, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
When you cast a spell infront of him he says something like "You're a mage? Can you make me invisible?" The only option is to either tell him no, or lie and tell him you did, which leads me to assume they had planned on putting this spell in game but didn't get around to it. Going to try and find the ID and try it on Haming. 24.33.141.151 21:32, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Nothing special happens when you actually cast it on him, although I cast it on Lydia and she said 'What the...I'm invisible!' so they must have originally planned to put this spell ingame, or else she wouldn't have that dialogue since there's no other way she would become invisible.
Actually, there is a way. Wabbajack's random effects include rendering the victim invisible. However, I think these are different cases and they should not be confused. — Unsigned comment by 95.154.168.20 (talk) at 09:01 on 27 November 2011

A theory: Maybe the Wabbajack (in all it's randomness) uses the Fade Other spell, and that the spell wasn't really meant for anything else. — Unsigned comment by 80.213.97.174 (talk) at 20:46 on 2 December 2011

This is probably a case of the spell being coded, but unattainable. Oblivion had a number of spell effects like this, including "Lock" and "Darkness" — Unsigned comment by 97.81.172.231 (talk) at 16:02 on 8 December 2011

Well i tried adding the spell to my character with the console, and every time i cast it on a follower, their eyes turn invisible. same bug happens sometimes with the pc character. although with the character you can reload and itll fix it. with followers however reloading doesn't seem to work. maybe that bug was the reason why they didnt include it?

InvisibilityEdit

Should anything be added on invisibility? It appears to not actually work in the pc version, although I don't know if it's a usage problem or an actual bug. — Unsigned comment by 70.90.74.161 (talk) at 20:58 on 9 December 2011

Update:

elderscrolls.wikia.com is claiming that it's due to noise and that muffle must be casted with it to be successful. However, boots with muffle ( shrouded / jester ) do not seem to be enough. — Unsigned comment by 70.90.74.161 (talk) at 21:12 on 9 December 2011

Yes, It is quite overpowered when you also have the nightingale boots with muffle, as well as the quiet casting perk. You can effectively be sneaking right in front of an enemy NPC indefinitely without him noticing. It makes a few "fetch item" quests very trivial.--216.15.123.224 03:47, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

MuffleEdit

Does the magnitude of a muffle affect have any bearing on its usefulness?

When modded to allow disenchanting of Muffle items (Such as the shrouded boots) muffle can be seen to have the price of the item enchanted increasing, dependant on what size soul is used to enchant the item.

Does this mean that there can be a 'Muffle' magnitude higher than 1 point?

Does having more points make the user more 'muffled'?

Does being more muffled have any bearing on stealth detection?

Is the same true of spells created in the toolkit?

--86.129.243.252 18:35, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

the price increase is purely for the soul gem used, and as far as i can tell, does not increase the effect. i have gotten a random loot item orcish boots of muffle that can be disenchanted it gave no magnitude however so i can't answer the other questions (xbox) 149.135.146.89 09:13, 20 May 2013 (GMT) horned turtle

Clairvoyance XPEdit

Casting the spell Clairvoyance does not grant any Illusion experience, although its casting cost is affected by Illusion perks.

It does grant XP under some circumstances, since I've leveled up my Illusion while casting it. My thought is that it's not just an observer that's required, but a hostile observer. That's just a guess though. Given the differing experiences, we need to do some more investigation and confirmation before we note anything on the page. Robin Hood  (talk) 03:16, 4 March 2013 (GMT)

Have you done it recently? The Bethesda updates have made a lot of subtle changes to the spell system. I think I used to level Illusion with Clairvoyance, and now it doesn't work anymore. Also I noticed another odd thing today: Muffle (and probably Invisibility, but I'm playing at low levels again) levels Illusion even when you're not in combat and there are no observers. You can sit there casting it like an Oblivion spell and level up Illusion. --Morrolan (talk) 20:13, 5 March 2013 (GMT)
I'm pretty sure it was with 1.8 at the very early levels of Illusion. I suspect the increase is so small that it quickly becomes unlikely as you get to higher levels. I can definitely second your observations for Muffle, as I use that regularly to level my Illusion, just wandering around casting it haphazardly till I run out of Magicka. I haven't used Invisibility all that much recently, but I'll experiment with both that and Clairvoyance and see if I can come to any firm conclusions about how they work. Robin Hood  (talk) 08:28, 6 March 2013 (GMT)
Okay, testing is done on all three spells using the 1.9 beta, and all three give you XP consistently regardless of whether you're in the presence of observers, in combat, or all alone in the middle of nowhere. As I suspected, Clairvoyance gives you a very small amount of XP. At Illusion 15, casting it for 30 seconds continuously (after using the Console to give myself large amounts of Magicka) got me from a bare two pixels to the tip of the bar being about half-way between the two Ls when Illusion was selected. At that rate, I suspect it would take around 5 minutes of continuous casting just to advance from Illusion 15 to 16. At anything but the lowest levels, the advance would be unnoticeable unless you were able to cast continuously for an extremely long time. Robin Hood  (talk) 08:52, 6 March 2013 (GMT)
You know, I'm beginning to wonder if there are platform differences on some of these issues. You're obviously playing on PC, I'm on XBox. I'll reserve observations until I finish with this playthrough, but next time I'll start with an Illusion 15 character and beeline for the bandit mine and test. It's possible they just reduced its XP value on all platforms though, and knocked it down low enough so that I thought it had gone to a 0 value spell, like Vampiric Drain. --Morrolan (talk) 21:46, 6 March 2013 (GMT)
I honestly thought it was zero myself until I levelled my Illusion while casting it. I'll definitely be curious to hear what you get on your next playthrough, though. Platform differences for the various games are rare, but not unheard of. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:26, 6 March 2013 (GMT)
In theory (haven't tested this), Vampiric Drain should level Destruction as well. Its casting cost is even less than Clairvoyance, even at its highest level. So it would be an even slower increase. Only spells with 0 casting cost should not affect skills. So this would include just Equilibrium, Summon Arniel's Shade, and Vision of the Tenth Eye and that's it. Arniel's Convection has just 1/sec casting cost, so it would be ridiculously slow to level. (It in fact displays 0 casting cost if you have the Novice Destruction perk, but it may still use a tiny fraction of magicka even then.) You'd have to be a true masochist to attempt to level Destruction using Arniel's Convection, but hypothetically it should work. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 14:28, 7 March 2013 (GMT)

Fade Other Not MentionedEdit

Why is this spell not even mentioned on the page, yes it is bugged and unobtainable, but in the clothing article there are tons of unobtainable items there so fade other should be here as well. I would like that because I have been looking for spells in game that are generally unobtainable such as conjure dragon priest and bound arrow. Since they are not normally in their respective pages this makes finding them difficult. — Unsigned comment by 173.51.247.17 (talk) at 23:34 on 18 February 2014

I guess this is a bit late, but since someone else is bound to wonder at some point....
The reason is that there are over 800 so-called spells in the base game alone. Spells can include abilities, one-time effects, NPC-specific spells, player spells, spells that were planned for something then abandoned, and probably a few other things I'm not thinking of. Since we obviously can't document every such spell, I believe we've only documented ones that can be found in spell books, or that the player can otherwise acquire in the game. "Fade Other" does not fall into that category. There are, in fact, about 60 spells that are completely unused in the base game (or appear to be, at a glance). There would be little point to documenting them all.
If you'd like to try some of them out, though, you can use the CSList to find them. Just click on the "SPEL" section, and it will list absolutely everything that the game calls a spell. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:25, 8 August 2014 (GMT)
Actually, we do have a page for it. We also have Spectral Arrow and Transmogrify as their own pages. I personally don't think they should have their own pages, and would support deleting them and relegating them to a subsection of the Spells page called "Unobtainable Spells", similar but smaller in scale to how we approach items that cannot be obtained in-game. (If there are enough, maybe a separate "Unobtainable Spells" page would be warranted) ∬(RisingDusk)dxdy 19:53, 8 August 2014 (GMT)

Charm SpellEdit

Is there anything close to an "Oblivion" Charm spell in Skyrim? If not what would be recommended. Thank you — Unsigned comment by 108.233.128.200 (talk) at 15:27 on 5 February 2019

It really depends what you're trying to accomplish. If you're looking to improve vendor prices, you'd want a Fortify Barter effect, which is only available in potions, magic items, or as a blessing...without mods, it's not available as a spell. If you're looking to calm hostile opponents (which I believe was possible at really high dispositions in Oblivion, but it's been a while since I've played), then you want one of the pacify effects. The specific spells are listed on that page. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:13, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
