I'm slightly confused as to how I actually get the lift to work. It works fine from within Blackreach, but I assumed you'd be able to take it back down again and save the ruin-trek. Is this not the case, or do I need to do something while down in Blackreach to start it working?

The lift must be activated from within Blackreach first. Is the gate closing, or are you fast-travelling from within the lift, without opening the gate first of all? The gate shouldn't close once you have opened it from the inside. And, to be clear, you can't reach the lever from the outside. Silence is Golden^{Break the Silence} 14:13, 14 October 2012 (GMT)

With followers I once had a glitch at the lifts, spawning me outside the gate after using it from Blackreach. Reloading from an earlier save-point fixed it, spawning me inside the gate this time, so I could activate the gate-opening lever. --Alfwyn (talk) 14:31, 14 October 2012 (GMT)

BugsEdit

I am also having this problem with a fully updated game. It happened once while leaving Blackreach and once while returning. I had a follower with me (Serena) both times. Coronus (talk) 00:46, 9 August 2013 (GMT)

For anyone still having this problem the only way you could got out of it was by trying to access a menu with the command line, and the only one is the showracemenu this will make the game stop the continuous loading loop so it is easier to use the command line to write coc whiterun and the game starts loading the location immediately. When i got there i instantly pressed the esc button to stop the loading which it brought up but still loaded back to the lift. When the loading finished miraculously i could move and was "unstuck" from the loop. I hope this helps. (176.63.5.110 19:12, 29 December 2018 (UTC))

Is it inappropriate to mention that the simplest fix for appearing on the exterior of the lift gate is to open the console and use tcl to go back inside? I mean, I guess it's more "pure" to load from earlier, but what if I don't want to crawl through the Cathedral when my last auto-save appeared

same glitching problemEdit

I was going through the quest, everything was fine until I took the lift up. Load screen came and went but as soon as I was at the top the game wouldn't stop glitching out. I couldn't move, couldn't open the door, couldn't even get to any option menus. I ended up using task manager to close Skyrim, reload Skyrim, and select a previous save spot to load. Every time I try again the same thing happens. Do you just have to take the long way around it or do you have to use it for the quest?
