Skyrim talk:Durnehviir (dragon)

TranslationEdit

Any clues on to what his name means? Tried using the Dragon Language but his/she/it's name is pretty weird — Unsigned comment by Lore Master (talkcontribs) at 22:25 on 12 June 2012

The translation does look wierd, but then this may not be the correct spelling. I cannot find any official sources, and the unofficial ones say this is a best guess spelling. There is even another that has the dragon's name as something else entirely. The Silencer speaksTalk 23:09, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
[[1]]According to JIGSAW4 it means Curse Never Dying. RIM 12:48, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes - I saw Curse Never Dying on The Elder Scroll Wikia a few days ago - makes sense I suppose. They somehow got the translation from the related shout - Summon Durnehviir (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Summon_Durnehviir --92.25.198.254 17:01, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Summon Durnehviir bugEdit

I also listed this in his bug section just in case. In my playtrough of Dawnguard, i was unable to summon Durnehviir to Tamriel. This while i knew all 3 words. But the journal said i'd still have to learn his first word of the shout. When trying to summon him, my PC just stops randomly at Neh. Has this happened to anyone else? Or is my game bugged? — Unsigned comment by DarkDayzz (talkcontribs) at 14:25 on 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Problem solved, to summon Durnehviir you need to point it somewhere one the ground, unlike with the shout to summon Odahviing — Unsigned comment by DarkDayzz (talkcontribs) at 17:16 on 27 June 2012

"Kill Valerica"?Edit

"He made a deal with the Ideal Masters, he would kill Valerica in exchange for the power to summon very powerful undead armies." It says this on the page, but I'm fairly sure that he never mentions having to kill her. I think he says that he made a deal with the Ideal Masters to serve them in the Soul Cairn until Valerica dies, not until he kills her.Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I'm fairly certain that he never says that he was tasked with killing her. Plus, I don't think the fact that she's immortal makes her impossible to kill. It just means that she'll never die of old age, because there are plenty of examples of vampires being killed in the game. But regardless, can anyone else confirm whether or not he says he is supposed to kill her?--Kolensk 07:46, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

While speaking to Durnehviir, he explains his unexpected deception from the Ideal Masters, In exchange for the power to summon very powerful undead armies, he was to remain the Guardian of the Soul Cairn until the death of Valerica, however due to Valerica's vampiric immortality, Durnehviir unwillingly agreed to watch over the Soul Cairn for eternity. Upon defeating Durnehviir after breaking the barrier surrounding Valerica, he begins to call upon the player as "Qaunariin" or "Vanquisher" and asks the player to grant him his wish of summoning him back to Tamriel using the power of the Thu'um. Though he can never fully leave the Soul Cairn, his one wish is to roam the skies of Tamriel once more.
Fixed up the stub--CodySP 03:57am, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

SummoningEdit

If you are having trouble summoning him, make sure you have unlocked his full name in the shout menu. (174.96.39.109 08:26, 29 June 2012 (UTC))

Permanent Summon Bug?Edit

To learn the third word of Soul Tear, I summoned Durnehviir while in Dayspring Canyon. Even days later, he's still flying around. I rather like the idea of Fort Dawnguard having its own dragon on watch, so I haven't bothered to see if summoning him elsewhere fixes the bug. SonGoharotto 14:21, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Durnehviir doesn't time out, he only is unsummoned when defeated in combat or if you summon something else that takes up his summon slot (he occupies one of the spots usually used by a conjuration/necromancy spell). So until something can defeat him in battle, he will remain, and usually be found circling the player at a good distance. I can usually hear him getting into fights with the wildlife as I travel, so he is very proactive in that regard. This can be a potential drawback as you may get into a fight while Durnehviir is fighting elsewhere, and he won't likely arrive until his fight is finished (depending on what he's fighting it could be pretty quick, he has a lot of force multiplication working for him in a fight), or you can re-summon him by using the shout again, which may have the side effect of having Durnehviir's fighting target come towards you looking to finish what it started. — Unsigned comment by 70.171.243.110 (talk) at 19:39 on 5 August 2012
The note on him being present until death needs to be removed, or perhaps moved to bugs. If not in combat he will eventually land near you and disappear in a death animation the way other summoned creatures do. He does seem to last quite a long time however. I noticed this first at the battle of Whiterun during the civil war quest, I summoned him at the beginning and he lasted the whole battle, flew around after the battle for a while, but then later landed near me and disappeared. I tested this again later out of combat. — Unsigned comment by 108.199.186.107 (talk) at 02:23 on 1 September 2012
According to game-data, there is a timer, so I've removed the part of the note about him remaining until death or another summon. ABCface 02:37, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Glitch confirmed. After the 3rd summons, Durnehviir flew away and never came back or so I thought. I fast traveled to Markarth to check on a mod I was working on and Durneviir showed up just flying around in circles. So I fast traveled back to Whiterun and sure enough he was there again just circling about. The solution is to go outside somewhere in a secluded area and summon an Atronach. Just stand there and wait for your Atronach to disappear and there you go no more Durnehviir. The shout that summons Durnehviir works like a Conjuration Spell and if this glitch activates when you summon him he becomes a permanent summons until something else is summoned. Summoning in Soul cairn "bug"Edit

I had free souls so i unlocked the shout immediately after being thaught and summoned him in the soul cairn, even though it says you must summon him in tamriel, if you do summon him in soul cairn he still teaches you the word

OWP--109.89.12.171 12:29, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

I've added it as a bug. Can anyone else confirm? —Legoless 12:44, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I can confirm as I did this same thing about two days ago. I had the regular Durnehviir on the stone where he speaks to you, and on the ground next to that stone was the summoned Durnehviir, who behaved exactly as if he'd been summoned in Tamriel. Deadlykris (talk) 00:39, 10 September 2012 (EDT)

Unique dialogueEdit

Just found that if you haven't been named dragonborn yet and defeat Durnehviir he will have different dialogue. He refers to you as a "dovah" in some way and when you ask why he called you that he says he did it out of respect and something along the lines of "maybe someday it will be revealed to the both of us." not sure if this was worth adding to the page but i found it interesting that it was added since VERY few players will actually see it — Unsigned comment by 24.89.78.35 (talk) at 04:43 on 6 September 2012‎

I went ahead and added that (from my perspective) as well as a synopsis of how he reacts to someone who hasn't killed Alduin but has completed Dragon Rising. Deadlykris (talk) 00:49, 10 September 2012 (EDT)

Durnehviir and SkuldafnEdit

Pardon the spoilers here but I'm doing the main quest and since the Draugr Shouty-Lords are driving me crazy shooting me with painful arrows from way up high I summoned this mighty dragon to kill them for me or at least weaken them.

Instead Durnehviir refuses to attack, saying something along the lines of "Skuldafn Fin Faas Dinok" Which roughly translates to "Skuldafn the Fear of Death" I think he thinks he's going to die if he attacks the Draugr.

Just to make sure it wasn't a glitch, I cleared the closest tower to await the cooldown of the Summon Durnehviir shout before I summoned him again. He still refuses to attack. So far it seems to be just Skuldafn.--67.185.108.121 02:02, 11 December 2012 (GMT)

This is probably something to do with what happens to normal dragons at this stage. They shout "Skudalfn will be the death of you" or close to that. I think this won't happen once you complete the quests. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 02:09, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
He doesn't just shout this he also refuses to attack and allows himself to be killed. --67.185.108.121 06:29, 14 December 2012 (GMT)

() Need some strategies to fight those arrow draugr Lords: Zig-zag your way to get near them, like a soldier avoiding bullets. When close, bash them using shield or weapon. Simple bash might be enough. Bash, slash, bash, slash, slash. Take them down one by one. Never let 2 overlords slash you at the same time. Use some shout. Never be foolhardy, use some cover. Move left, right, backward, forward all the time. Just 2 cents. — Unsigned comment by 175.139.113.161 (talk) at 06:42 on 18 December 2012

Thanks for the tips, but it doesn't really pertain to the issue the OP is having which involves Durnehviir not functioning properly when summoned in this battle. Durnehviir dying during dialogue to learn his shoutEdit

When summoning Durnehviir, he sometimes dies in the middle of his dialogue, without any enemies nearby. You still learn the word properly, but i'm wondering why he's dying sometimes even in mid-word. VycDarkshadow (talk) 21:22, 23 December 2012 (GMT)

I've also taken 2 videos of this occurring. The first time happens when he tell you the word "Vaaz", and the second occurs before he even finishes his first sentence. Same location, still no enemies nearby. VycDarkshadow (talk) 21:30, 23 December 2012 (GMT)

I can't summon durnehviir in apocrypha in the black book waking dreams.Edit

I know how to summon him, but even though the shout goes on the full cooldown, and i use the three words, he still doesn't appear. anybody else experience this..?Sumthingsup (talk) 19:34, 16 April 2013 (GMT)

Addition to Notes - Player can summon in inside locationEdit

I'm fairly new to wiki systems such as this and not sure if I can just straight up add to the page myself so I'm putting it here. I think that the fact you can summon the dragon in inside locations such as caves tombs or anything with a big enough surface should be mentioned in the notes section.

The surface appears to need to be relatively flat but doesn't need to be perfect and the surface only needs to be big enough for the legs of the dragon his tail does not need room and will clip through walls if need be. — Unsigned comment by Nikolai5 (talkcontribs) at 14:20 on 24 August 2013 (GMT)

I summoned him in Blackreach, but he spawned some distance away from the spot I was shouting at, and he wouldn't fly. It was awkward having him stuck behind us when Serana and I were attacking the Debate Hall. Jaekelopterus3 (talk) 19:24, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
