Marked for Death bug[edit]

It seems to share the same words as the Marked for Death shout. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 12:03 on 29 June 2012

I have this as well. When I use this shout it says 'Krii Lun Aus' — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 12:08, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
yup yup me too. I have all three words for "drain vitality" and just the first for "marked for death". However it shows drain vitality in my shout list twice. marked for death once. It has the description for the second as, drains 1 hp drains 1 stamina drains 1 magicka. Any ideas what causes this? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 11:03 on 30 June 2012
It does seem to be purely aesthetic, Marked for Death and the Drain Vitality version of it seem to do the same thing. — Unsigned comment by Tabber42 (talkcontribs) at 19:35 on 30 June 2012
On Xbox, after getting all three shouts then later getting a Marked for Death Shout there may appear a second Drain Vitality Shout with the same two words in Marked for Death, Kill and Leech.(Third word unknown for I have not gotten it yet, I presume it will be the same as well.) This second Drain Vitality Shout has the same name and appearance except the information box below says "Drains 1 points of Health per second for 20 seconds. Drains 1 points of Magicka per second for 20 seconds. Drains 1 points of" and the text is cut off, but I presume it says Stamnia. Also if you unlock a word in Marked for Death it unlocks a word in this new shout. One soul for two words. Although it says it's a different shout, no new characteristics have been seen. Not quite sure how this happened.Pictures will be uploaded to confirm. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 22:02 on 2 July 2012
Moved from article because it has not been fully checked by the poster and for being far too long. Investigate it first before you post partial possible bugs. The Silencer speaksTalk 21:14, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

() I cant learn anymore words for "marked for death" i have only the first one. Any new ones are not added to the shout list. drain vitality glitches marked for deathy... — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 00:12 on 3 July 2012

I had level 2 marked for death when i learned drain vitality. I somewhere down the line i gained ANOTHER drain vitality that has the same words as marked for death, with 12,12,12 and "drains 1 hp drains 1 stamina drains 1 magicka." I was still able to learn the last word of marked for death on the dragon lair wall AND learn the last word of drain vitality afterwords. I currently have 2 drain vitalitys and 1 marked for death, all of them fully upgraded. hope this helps =p — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 12:23 on 3 July 2012
Is it possible that if you first get all normal drain vitality words, then if you get a word for marked for death, that it wont glitch? Because I personally really do not want this glitch :/ Can anybody confirm this? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 17:53 on 4 July 2012
I just did some testing. I had all three words of Drain Vitality, then picked up all three words for Marked for Death. I currently have Marked for Death in my list appearing as it's supposed to; however, I also have 3 Drain Vitality shouts. The first one appears as it's supposed to. The second one has the words for Marked for Death, and drains 2 of each attribute per second. The third also has the words for Marked for Death, but the Drain values are at 1 per second. So it appears that if you get all three words for both shouts, you get access to both shouts; you just have two extra entries for Drain Vitality that are bugged. Swk3000 21:10, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
Last night I got all 3 words for Marked for death without any words for drain vitality when I got the last word for marked for death the same bug occurred to me. I had two versions of drain vitality when I had not even learnt a word for drain vitality, I think it is marked for death that is bugged. This was on 360. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 23:56 on 11 July 2012

() I have the same problem as well. I noticed the glitched shout shares the same look as the actual Drain Vitality shout and not the Marked for Death shout, the cooldown is 12 seconds like the glitched shout says (I timed it repeatedly and got the same results every time for the two levels of the shout I have unlocked), and when I use the shout I don't hear any words. There are still things about this glitched shout that I would like to investigate but I cannot because I am on the console. I would like to know if the shout gets stronger the longer you hold down the button like the Marked for Death shout and I would like to know if the shout also reduces armor rating as well as if it retains the permanent loss of armor rating glitch the Marked for Death shout has. Sadly I cannot investigate further until I have Dawnguard on the PC, and that is if this isn't a glitch specific to the Xbox 360 console version of Skyrim. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 06:13 on 12 July 2012

Attempts to remove extra "Drain Vitality" shouts from an Xbox 360 save file on the PC with the console have been met with no success. The console fails to recognize these shouts as valid parameters so player.removeshout commands do not work. A more creative fix will likely be needed. Garland the Elder 14:34, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
In the PC version I was able to remove the bugged "Drain Vitality" shouts using the console commands player.removeshout xx0181B8 (upon learning 'Lun') and player.removeshout xx018244 (upon learning 'Aus'). Once the extra shouts are removed the authentic 'Gaan Lah Haas' can be heard upon use.-- 07:28, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Above solution is confirmed and I would endorse moving it onto the main page as it is still the only known fix to said glitch.Garland (talk) 21:34, 3 September 2012 (EDT)
I had this kind of a bug - had two words of Marked before installing Dawnguard, got First Drain word, got bugged 1x Drain shout, got Last Marked word, got second Drain word - got two Drain bugged shouts 1x and 2x, third Drain word netted me three bugged Drain shouts - 1x, 2x and 3x. Reloaded to before getting third Drain, removed first two bugged Drain shout via console, learned third Drain word, got a bugged 1x Drain, removed it, added normal Drain through console, seems fine.Sergio Morozov (talk) 20:31, 15 December 2012 (GMT)

Quest Failed to Clear[edit]

I came here with a radiant quest from the Greybeards for a word of power. Just installed Dawnguard and haven't begun any Dawnguard content yet or gotten the first word of Drain Vitality yet. I picked up the word okay, and it gave me the first word of Drain Vitality, but the quest failed to be marked as completed and got stuck in my journal. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 20:02 on 19 July 2012

Same here, I even completed the quest after learning the word using the console, but Arngeir still gives me the same location. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 20:32 on 14 August 2012

Bug with Drain Vitality and the Greybeards[edit]

On Xbox 360. I have previously learned all of Drain Vitality, and decided to go talk to the Greybeards to find more Shouts. I asked Arngeir where other Words of Power could be found, and he sent me to Arcwind Point (location of one of the Words for Drain Vitality). The Word Wall is lit up, highlighting the word, but I cannot do anything else there. The quest marker remains on my map, and the quest in my journal. I reloaded once and asked Arngeir again, and he is still sending me to Arcwind. Has this happened to anyone else? Can anyone please confirm this? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 14:50 on 20 July 2012

Happened to me as well and it seems it can't be solved... Dawnguard was a good dlc but after downloading it my game became glitchy as hell with things like this and game crashes all the time, anyway the only solution for now is to wait for patches... — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 14:41 on 24 July 2012
I got this quest from the Greybeards too, and it won't clear. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 12:47 on 25 July 2012
I also had this happen to me, and I let it stay there and continued on with the game for a while, after learning at least 3 to 4 more words of power the quest automatically updated and I was able to go back to Arngier, but after doing quite a few more find word wall quests from him, he now has sent me back to Arcwind Point! I dont understand how or why, because I already went there, got the word, the glitch happened and then finally went away, and now he wants me to go back there again and there won't even be a word this time. Anyway I'm going to do an experiment, I have not learned the final word of Drain Vitality that is on the frozen lake, so I reloaded my auto-save from before I fast-traveled to Hrothgar, and I'm instead going to go learn the final word, and I'm also going to activate the three drain vitality words, as i only have the first active, then I'm going to try to go back to Arngeir and ask him where to find another word. Hopefully he will not point me to Arcwind Point again. I will update this when I am done in an hour or so when I find out.(Also on a side note, I too have three total drain vitality shouts two of which use the same words as marked for death and do absolutely nothing from what I can see...) -Chris — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 02:51 on 8 August 2012‎
UPDATE - IT WORKED! Ok, sorry I was unable to finish last night and update this, but, here it is. Ok so what I did was when Arngier sends you to Arcwind Point, reload the autosave and leave Hrothgar without talking to him, find all 3 words of power for Drain Vitality. Next kill three dragons, and use their souls to unlock Drain Vitality's 3 words. Finally return to Arngier and viola, he gave me a different word wall to find. So if I am correct, having the actual Drain Vitality shout, all 3 words, unlocked and done with, should update Arngier so that he doesn't think you need to find those words still, thus he will not send you to Arcwind Point. In fact, I may have to start a new character just to see if before finding any marked for death words and going straight for the 3 drain vitality words first, maybe that will make it so you do not get the marked for death glitch, or the 2 extra glitched drain vitality shouts that use the same words as marked for death, and Arngier may never even try to send you to arcwind point thus also fixing that glitch. I will update when I can figure out if it works. -Chris — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 17:36 on 8 August 2012‎
I have this same bug and your solution didn't work for me. :( I had the exact same problem with the Arcwind Point quest not clearing once I learned the word. So I went back to a previous save and located the last word for both Drain Vitality (from Arcwind Point) and Marked for Death (from Autumnwatch Tower) without any quest from Arngier, and unlocked them. Saved and went to High Hrothgar and he still tells me to go back to Arcwind Point. Since I only have three shout words left to learn in the game, it's more an annoyance than a real problem for me. But I think it's important for people to know that the solution presented here may not work for everyone. ~FiveCentFather (Ken N.) (talk) 08:17, 13 March 2013 (GMT)

Svala, not Svolo[edit]

I am staring at the actual wall in game and the name is Svala, not Svolo (definitely 'a's not 'o's) and 'NUZ' ('but') not 'NUS' ('statue'). If one assumes that KRIIN was meant to be KRII ('kill') and PIRAAK means something like 'has/had' or 'possess/ed', then the inscription says "Here lies (the) body of Svala, who possessed (the) strength to kill (a) dragon, but not (the) stamina to kill many." 21:44, 12 August 2012 (UTC)Aydena

I was thinking the same thing- Krii is "kill" and Kriid is "slayer", so Kriin is most likely a modifier of verb tense
(or perhaps verb mood). It could also be a misspelling, (although it happens twice on the Word Wall) or a stylistic marker
with no grammatical impact, leaving the reader to assume the original meaning, "kill/slay" 13:59, 10 July 2013 (GMT)

Does Resist Magic reduce the effect of this shout?[edit]

I'm almost definitely sure it does, but just want to know. (I don't have Dawnguard yet.) -- 05:51, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

This shout isn't affected by resistances or spell absorption. However wards, including the one from Spellbreaker, will block it.-- 12:08, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Word Wall with the third word for Drain Vitality.[edit]

Grabbed a screenshot with the dragon text for the third word in Drain Vitality if someone can add the text to this article. [1] 12:55, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Temporary fix (uses a mod)[edit]

Not the author, but glad I found this mod:

Unlinks the two shouts, and once you use a Divine's shrine, it removes the erroneous drain vitality entry. Good workaround until Beth fixes it. 06:49, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Lah word wall?[edit]

Where did this Lah word wall translation come from? The only two full sized new word walls I recall in DG were in Dimhollow and Arcwind - The one in Forgotten Vale was just a stone with one word on it. -- 06:25, 10 September 2012 (EDT)

On the Marked for Death Bug[edit]

When I leared Marked for Death, instead of learning the glitched version of this shout, I learned it twice. I used the console to remove it, but there's still one there, and player.removeshout 02018244 doesn't seem to do anything. Can anyone decipher this? Schiffy (talk) 03:08, 14 October 2012 (GMT)

A possible fix is: Player.removeshout 02008a62, then you can re-add manually Drain Vitality using player.teachword + Shout ID, if it works please update this fix into Drain Viality page. At least it worked for me — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 15:58 on 17 October 2012‎
It didn't work for me, and I'm not surprised, either. The remaining Drain Vitality I have doesn't use the words Gaan Lah Haas, it uses Krii Lun Aus, meaning it has some other Shout ID that I can't find. Schiffy (talk) 18:02, 21 October 2012 (GMT)
Schiffy: I have a 1 point version and a 2 point version. Is the 2 point version the one you have? I'm not sure if it's possible to get a bugged version higher than that, though internally, there are several more. I'll add the 2 point version to the bug fix for now; if anybody reports seeing a higher one than that, I'll reword it to include all 7 versions. Robin Hoodtalk 05:53, 8 November 2012 (GMT)
RobinHood70: I have the above issue with the a "Drain Vitality" set of shouts ranging from 1 to 4. As such could you please post the ID's for all 7 (And possibly list which each is for)? As I have no idea how to locate them in-game myself and can't find anything helpful on the web. Also; I don't know if I am the first to have this issue up to the 4 point variant but in case others do, it may be worthwhile to list the ID's for them on the "Drain Vitality" page as well (It already lists the 1 and 2 point versions). A lot to ask, but if you can help i would sure appreciate it! Legoholic (talk) 05:23, 13 June 2013 (GMT)

Supposed Fix?[edit]

The listed fix on the bug section that talks about loading a save where you don't have any words of marked for death DOES NOT work. I've tested this several times now on the 360 and it doesn't make a single difference you still get the glitched copies of Drain Vitality upon getting the 2nd word of Marked for Death. Can anyone confirm this on any platform? Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 04:36, 24 October 2012 (GMT)

I can also confirm this as well with the Xbox 360. The only way that I've found to fix the multiple glitched shouts issue is to learn all three words of Marked for Death prior to installing Dawnguard. Blackpete (talk) 08:26, 22 April 2013 (GMT)
Thankfully, I discovered I had this glitch (Xbox version) before I started any of the Dawnguard quests, and the suggested fix of temporarily removing the Dawnguard expansion worked for me. Oddly, though, when I reinstalled Dawnguard, it gave me credit for the "Acquire 11 vampire perks" acheivement, although I have never been a vampire with any character to date. But yeah, the fix works. KeturahIshtari (talk) 07:02, 23 September 2013 (GMT)
Ugh! I just remembered today that it is Dawnguard that adds the lycanthropy perks, and I've already overwritten my save files, so all the werewolf perks I picked up at fairly low levels are gone. Since it seems to get more and more difficult to get through the game in beast mode at higher levels, I will probably just wait until I start a new character to explore the remaining lycanthropy perks. Bottom line, its best to get all the words for "Marked For Death " ASAP, in case you have to uninstall/reinstall Dawnguard afterwards. — Unsigned comment by KeturahIshtari (talkcontribs) at 07:07 on 25 September 2013
This bug is the same as the first Marked for Death bug that's listed in the article. The same solutions apply, and on PC the UDGP fixes all of these issues. It's all due to Bethesda having goofed big time by overlapping the shouts with the ones the dragon uses. Since it's the same bug, I've gone ahead and removed the duplicated entry to remove the confusion it causes people. Arthmoor (talk) 21:36, 9 March 2014 (GMT)

Possible translation for KRiiN[edit]

This word appears twice in the first word wall:

Here lies (the) body of Svolo,
Who ___ strength to ___
Dragon but not (the) stamina to
___ many

I'm guessing both from context and from the similar words "Krii" and "Kriid" listed at Dragon Language that it means something like "Kill". If the word "PIRaaN" could be read as "had", and the word "DOVah" could be be seen as plural, you'd get the following translation:

Here lies (the) body of Svolo,
Who had strength to kill
Dragon(s) but not (the) stamina to
kill many

Seems to make sense this way. Can anyone back this up or refute it? TheRealLurlock (talk) 02:24, 14 November 2012 (GMT)

Makes sense, as it is the same translation I came up with. I'd figure that "Kriid" would translate to something similar to "kill," instead of being another word for it. Perhaps "kriid" = "slay"? Derejin (talk)
I came up with the same idea. Consdiering how many words English has for kill (kill, slay, murder, exterminate, etc), I think worrying about whether it's the exact word is immaterial; the concept's the same :). That said, I like it with "murder" as the translation myself. Consdiering these supposedly date from the Dragon Priest days, that seems as if it might fit, too. 16:47, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
Just finished the Main Quest again, and one of the dragons, when celebrating Alduin's death, said "Dovahkiin los ok dovahkriid" - considering that the quest is named Dragonslayer, I'm pretty certain he said "(the) Dragonborn is the dragonslayer!" So, yeah, I'm very certain now that "kriid" = "slay." Derejin (talk)
Yes, but the word here is Kriin. Kriid was already translated. 17:26, 19 December 2012 (GMT)
Dov is plural and Dovah is singular, so he had the strength to slay a dragon but not the stamina to slay many. I think it's pretty obvious what it says so I'll edit. Someone can put a little ? behind "kill" if they like, but it seems unnecessary. 04:08, 11 January 2013 (GMT)

Possible translation for Dilos[edit]

It is known that dilok means death dilos differs only in one syllable (I don't know if that's the right word) so it means something similair. I think it could mean deadly because then you get deadly wound and it speaks of someone dying so that would make sense. It basically says he died of a mortal wound. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 14:07 on 16 December 2012

Is it drain or absorb?[edit]

The in game description says "Coax both magical and mortal energies from your hapless opponent" but it doesn't seem to coax anything from anybody, can someone clear this up for me?

Im on xbox and a vampire if that matters for some technical oversight.Wrath425 (talk) 02:33, 12 March 2013 (GMT)

Damage per second[edit]

Here on this page the article states both the Revered and Legendary Dragons deal 10 Damage per second with this shout. On the Skyrim:Dragon page tough, it is different: 5/second and 7/second for the dragons. Which one is correct? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 19:09 on 26 June 2013

I have faced many Legendary Dragons, but not so many Revered Dragons. Legendary Dragons do 140 damage to my magicka(and the same to my health and stamina, but those are always quite high with magicka being much lower so the hit to my magicka is much more noticable). This lends credence to the 7/second for 20 seconds. Again, I have not faced many Revered Dragons, but their version of the shout seems to do somewhat less damage(quite possibly 100 in total or 5/second for 20 seconds). It may be worth noting that the shout seems to do the same damage(140 in the case of Legendary Dragons) regardless of your difficulty level(same damage to my magicka on Apprentice, Adept, Expert, Master and Legendary. I can only assume it would be the same on Novice as well but the only character I ever played on novice is only a couple dozen hours old at best and isn't far enough into the main quest line for dragons to spawn). This is with the Legendary version of the game on PC(so all official DLC save HD textures, latest official patch 1.9 and no mods installed including not having the Unofficial Patch installed). Jtenorj (talk) 22:45, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
This is a fairly simple task, and its a pity it never received due attention. Legendary dragons use a version of the Shout that drains 7/second for 20 seconds and Revered Dragons use a version that drains 5/second for 20 seconds. The effect is set and is not affected by resistance or difficulty settings. There is no version of the Shout that drains 10/second, however, there are another four that appear unused that deal 1, 2, 3, and 4 damage per second respectively. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:13, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
I have SE v1.5.39, running the game with the Unofficial Patch v4.1.4 and the difficulty setting definitely has an effect on the amount of damage from Drain Vitality. I just tested it with a Revered Dragon couple of times in a row on legendary, master and adept difficulties. The health went down around 50-60 on adept, 150-160 on master and 250-260 on legendary difficulty. Minus the health regeneration during those 20 seconds, the numbers correspond perfectly with what should be the expected damage at 1x (adept), 2x (master) and 3x (legendary).--Ikonomov (talk) 15:31, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

KriiN Meaning[edit]

I believe Kriin Does not mean "Kill" But instead "slay". Kriid has been confirmed by this site to mean "Slayer". — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 22:51 on 5 July 2013

There is always that possibility, but without hard evidence, there is no reason to change it. Also, Krii has already been confirmed as Kill, which is why it hasn't been translated on this page. We just don't know what KriiN means. Jeancey (talk) 23:02, 5 July 2013 (GMT)

Multiple Drain Vitality shouts[edit]

(PS3 user) I've seen the discussion on two Drain a vitality shouts, but I have 3. The first in the list, I only have the first word for, Stamina, (from the Arcwind Point word wall, which I was sent to by Arngeir, and can't clear from my misc quests as others have pointed out) and the description for which is:

"Coax both magical and mortal energies from your hapless opponent."

The second of the three Drain Vitality shouts I have completed, the words are Kill, Leech, and Suffer, with the description:

"Drains 2 points of Health per second for 20 seconds. Drains 2 points of Magicka per second for 20 seconds. Drains 2 points of" [Stamina per second for 20 seconds]

The third and final Drain Vitality shout (also completed) in my shouts list is identical to the second except for the description:

"Drains 1 points [sic] of Health per second for 20 seconds. Drains 1 points [sic] of Magicka per second for 20 seconds. Drains 1 points [sic] of" [Stamina per second for 20 seconds]

All three are identical in visual appearance to Marked for Death, which shares the same words as the second and third copies of the Drain Vitality shouts. I also have Marked for Death completed. 08:07, 2 February 2014 (GMT)

(xbox 360 user) My shout list and details are exactly the same as the PS3 user posted above. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 01:33 on 12 April 2014
This is a known bug, I have the same. Please see the bugs section on this page for details and possible fixes/how to avoid in future. Hope this helps. Biffa (talk) 10:24, 30 May 2014 (GMT)
The fix that I used and seems to have worked for me so far, is first us the console commands remove All of the marked for death words, than the drain vitality words. After this use the console commands to add Marked for death, but at the last word first, then middle word (it won't show up in menu yet, don't worry) after you add the last two words, THEN add the first word, and bam, no glitched DV shouts and only marked for death. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 16:04 on 5 June 2014
I just started playing the Skyrim: Special Edition on Xbox One, and I noticed I too have two Drain Vitality shouts in my shout log, but haven't actually encountered the shout yet. I have Marked for Death completely, and two Drain Vitality shouts (also completely) with the words of Marked for Death, one with the value of 1 point drained, and the other 2. Both show recharge rates of 12, 12, 12. Curious to see what happens when I do encounter a word wall teaching me the actual shout Drain Vitality. It'll probably add a third one like user What a horrible bug. An no way to fix this on Xbox One without ruining being able to unlock achievements :( Kennyannydenny (talk) 16:15, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
