Respawn?Edit

Anyone know if the dog can die? If so, will it respawn? — Unsigned comment by 68.249.202.76 (talk) at 05:26 on 31 March 2007‎

The dog can most definitely die (Mine lasted all of 5 minutes dragging it through the wilderness, but my character is level 35) and I haven't seen it since. It looks like it won't respawn. QuillanTalk 08:41, 31 March 2007 (EDT)
My dog also lasted about five minutes and I was level 2. When I tried taking it back to Cyrodiil it became stuck there and wouldn't come back to the Shivering Isles with me. -- Necaradan666 12:19, 11 April 2007
Sucks that I can't do this quest since I'm a Khajit!--74.122.192.40 17:35, 3 May 2007 (EDT)
If you're on the PC, player.placeatme 00072DA4 (to spawn a new one) and/or setessential 00072DA4 1 (to make it immortal). Two noteworthy traits: it never fights back, and it's usable as a container when unconscious. --Suitov 91.125.45.21 21:29, 22 September 2007 (EDT)
I also used the setessential-solution since i liked it right away. he can carry my stuff (like mentioned above), barks friendly and draws enemies to him. that's a nice pet! is it mentioned that it never deceases (vanishes)? so that you can use it as an anywhere-where-i-can-drag-it-container (assuming it is dead and still non-essential)?
PS: is there anything which gives stats just by being in your inventory (to improve the dog)? −84.151.140.112 12:02, 15 May 2009 (EDT)
If you place potions and scroll in the dog, it'll use 'em. I stored a lot of restore health potion loot in it, and noticed that it stopped dying, because it's drinking all those potions with the white aura popping up when it does so, which is how I noticed. It also used the spell scrolls, like absorb health, but not the targeting type, like fire ball. It does not use weapons or armor. --- Jean — Unsigned comment by 70.107.171.175 (talk) on 5 July 2009

() How do you place potions and scrolls onto the dog in the PS3 version? ~drac~ — Unsigned comment by 99.240.83.27 (talk) on 21 April 2010

You can't. rpeh •TCE 06:06, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

BhishaEdit

Is there something I have to do before this quest becomes available? Bhisha is not in Crucible in my game and I can't even begin this quest. — Unsigned comment by Jizzy (talkcontribs) at 03:19 on 27 May 2007

Raising Ushnar's Disposition gave me the quest option, but Bhisha was there. I guess there is no harm in trying to see if it will make Bhisha appear. -- TheTCD 21:30, 8 July 2007
the game wouldn't let me do this quest because Bisha died for some reason. — Unsigned comment by 66.169.36.236 (talk) at 13:58 on 16 September 2007

Can the Hound Follow?Edit

(question moved from Help Talk:Contents)

Ive got the skinned hound following me from Ushnar's Terror on the PS3 version. However, it does not follow me when I fast travel and when I go back to Cyrodiil. Is this just not in the PS3 version? — Unsigned comment by 75.70.230.80 (talk) at 01:49 on 18 January 2008

It definitely should follow you. Try resting when you arrive at your destination and see if the hound appears then. –RpehTCE 04:59, 18 January 2008 (EST)
I have the same issue with the hound getting stuck in Cyrodiil on the PC under Windows 7. Have not tried on XP. It will not follow back through the portal to Shivering Isles and is now stuck in Cyrodiil near the portal. Resting does not help to make the hound re-appear. Very annoying. May 15th 2010 (EST) — Unsigned comment by 124.190.214.218 (talk)

So what's the point?Edit

Is the entire point just that the dog fights for you until it is killed? I noticed the museum of oddities owner mentioned wishing she had one of his dogs, so I thought you could donate the Skinned Hound to her, but apparently not. I don't like this thing. Skinned Hounds weird me out both in-character and out-of-character. Mole126 13:43, 13 February 2008

Upon receiving the skinned hound, I thought the same thing, but I guess that this is not possible. It is annoying to me, too, as I, (call me stupid, that's fine) don't want to let the dog die, but it is a royal pain keeping it alive in certain areas.76.182.162.214 20:27, 4 January 2009 (EST)
Keeping the stupid thing alive for me required waiting/autosaving constantly which had the added benefit of always having a recent autosave if i died. My character being a dark elf female with 110% cameleon and only a bow also needed followers to distract opponents and the dog made a good one as its head is usually low enough to allow me to hit opponents with those paralyze arrows. Laughing while my dog rips at them. Ultimately i let it die because it would fight with my escorts.Datacaust 00:16, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

VerificationEdit

(moved from the article)

for xbox 360 dog cannot follow you out of the Shivering Isles

(which came from 67.187.61.231)

That's good information but can we have confirmation on other platforms please? –RpehTCE 15:32, 25 July 2008 (EDT)

Well, I'm not sure it's worth getting confirmation on other platforms, since it's not always true on Xbox 360. My Xbox 360 character definitely has Ushnar's Skinned Hound following her around in Cyrodiil. The dog doesn't necessarily follow you every time you go through the SI-Cyrodiil gate, but it can follow you. --NepheleTalk 16:14, 25 July 2008 (EDT)
For PS3, the dog does follow the player to Cyrodil but only if you've completed the Main Story or the Fringe is yet to be occupied by the Forces of Order. Basically as long as you can fast travel from New Sheoth to the Door to Cyrodil. Otherwise, the Gate Keeper will kill it, or it will be killed by some other creature/Order. It's difficult to understand what exactly will cause the dog to attack an NPC that is not a threat to the player; take for example the Unicorn. It attacks anyone who draws their weapon. The dog won't attack the Bravil Guard who always has his weapon drawn when you come out the Strange Door. In my case (twice) it didn't attack the two sparring outside the Arena. It also didn't attack the Blue Team Gladiator who was using his bow. But as soon as it saw the Yellow Team Champion, it ripped her apart. And Owen and Isabel joined in. Yet when the Yellow Team Champion (Essential) became unconcious, the dog attacked Isabel. But not Owen or the Blue Team Gladiator. The dog didn't attack anyone in the Arcane University either. Not even in the training room. It could not follow me into the DB Sanctuary but appeared right outside the well when I came back.--Webdemon00 01:05, 4 September 2008 (EDT)
I've just been playing with the Skinned Hound for the first time and found the same thing, so have added a short note to this effect. Petrushka 21:22, 8 November 2008 (EST)
I'm playing on PS3 (I can't believe I missed this quest when this expansion 1st came out :S) and managed to get the hound to the door to cyrodil in the fringe. My intention was to get him to the secret basement lab of my manor in Anvil and kill him in front of the altar to use as a cool evil-like ritualistic container. Problem is... He won't follow me through the door to Cyrodil AT ALL. I've tried dozens of times and he never follows through. Could it perhaps be a patch with GOTY edition? Is it because I own a horse which is standing outside the door in niben bay? Earlier in this post it says PS3 users can bring him to Cyrodil, but that just isn't the case with me. 9:51AM, September 1st 2011 (EST) **EDIT** Even though he wasn't there on the other side of the door in Cyrodil, for the hell of it, I tried fast-traveling to the stable outside Anvil, and VOILA! There he was all of a sudden :) — Unsigned comment by 69.49.42.87 (talk) at 13:50 on 1 September 2011

Kill The DogEdit

(moved from the article)
  • killing the Skinned Hound will cause Ushnar to disappear leaving the green quest marker on top of his house therefore not being able to complete the quest.

Moved because this definitely isn't true on the PC and there's no way it should happen on any other platform either. It's much more likely to be a one-off glitch. –RpehTCE 13:23, 29 July 2008 (EDT)

This is probably a one off glich, but when I used the "steal the dog food and feed it to Bhisha" method, after the Dark Seducers took out Bhisha, they creamed Ushnar as well. The quest is now stuck in the second-to-last stage, and when I set it as the active quest, there is a green marker on Ushnar's dog, sitting on the steps leading to the Palace on the outskirts of Crucible. No skinned hound, no Ushnar to talk to, nothing.
Right after Ushnar was creamed by the long-dominatrix arm of the law, I used the console command "Resurrect" on him. Still nothing. He's dead, the quest is stuck. So you're better off just bribing Bhisha. Never seems to glitch that way. — Unsigned comment by 67.190.205.73 (talk) at 14:22 on 28 December 2009
I had the same problem when i walked into the bedroom of Ushnars house I saw that the skinned hound had just collapsed and i didnt even attack it or anything so now the green arrow is above his house now and the quest is at a freeze because i cannot find Ushnar anywhere. — Unsigned comment by 71.177.13.165 (talk) at 18:29 on 8 April 2011
For what it's worth, here's more information on this supposedly rare occurrence. I sneaked into Ushnar's second floor before starting the quest. The Skinned Hound immediately got hit with some spell/enchantment and died (I was very confused, didn't know anything about this quest). Days (ingame) later, I finally started the quest. Killed Bhisha with no bounty added to me. Ushnar's green objective marker immediately led me to Things Found, almost to the same spot I killed Bhisha, but definitely not the same place. I couldn't find Ushnar anywhere, but I saw his dog walking around slowly nearby. I checked the roof (the green marker was "inside" Things Found), found no one, and when I dropped down again, the dog had also disappeared. Detect Life at 125 (which I always have on, else I never would have thought to search with this) showed that Ushnar's dog was very much alive and I'd say about 40 to 50 feet directly below Things Found. I can still hear him bark, but I cannot see any other 'life' (I looked upwards too), indicating perhaps Ushnar is more than 125 feet below the ground. The quest is stuck. X360, all updates. --71.53.152.93 04:28, 14 August 2013 (GMT)

Marked as Quest Object?Edit

I killed my Skinned Hound on purpose, just for the fun of it. I've since been in and out of the Shivering Isles, doing multiple random quests, and whenever I return to Crucible, it's still there. Does the corpse disappear eventually, and I've gotten lucky, or what? Mutated 23:43, 9 August 2008 (EDT)

it indeed is (see my posting above) −84.151.140.112 12:04, 15 May 2009 (EDT)

Possible to leave the dog in SI?Edit

Can you leave the skinned hound in the Isles? IT TOTALLY FREAKS ME OUT! I seriously don't like the idea of a skinless dog following me around everywhere. Help someone (And if I can't, I'm killing it). Zander 01:44, 1 October 2008 (EDT)

No you can't. You can't enter dialogue with the dog, to tell it to stay put. Only way to get rid of it is to kill it. --Timenn < talk > 03:44, 1 October 2008 (EDT)
That's annoying. Doesn't matter now, it died. Zander 10:02, 1 October 2008 (EDT)

Doing quest as Khajiit?Edit

Is it possible to do this quest as a Khajiit by use of console commands on the PC, short of changing to another race long enough to do the quest? — Unsigned comment by 32.158.71.159 (talk) at 05:24 on 9 November 2008

Could try using SetStage SE43 10 in the console (If I got it right), that'll kickstart the quest, no guarantee he'll be willing to talk about a reward though once you advance to the end-stage. I'm a khajiit too but, it makes sense he won't offer to a KHajiit; afterall, he hates them to the point he wants to KILL them, why'd we be any exception? =p - it' be nice though if Khajiithad an alternate option to get some reward out of it, like speak to the khajiit and turn the tables and off the orc. (As it is constantly getting attacked by hismongrels but not being allowed to attack HIm is annoying) --85.62.18.8 18:45, 5 January 2009 (EST)
Why would he not give you a reward if you forced the quest to start from the beginning? If I understand the game's scripting well enough, it seems to me that it would give the dog to you as a "quest" item reward (as in recived during a quest, not an actual quest item) not out of the goodness of the NPC's FAKE conscience.--Lightfire228 14:42, 25 June 2011 (EST)
He might not be willing to talk to the player, and the reward is set to arrive via dialog. I can't check without my game right now though. --DKong27 Talk Cont 19:36, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Arena DistrictEdit

  • On the PS3, taking the pet Skinned Hound to the Arena District in the Imperial City can cause it to attack the two people sparring outside, or the combatants inside as well. This does not happen on the Xbox 360 or PC.

I've deleted this "bug" from the article. Several people have now confirmed that it does not happen, and it is very unlikely that this is PS3-specific behaviour. It seems far more likely that there was some other reason why the Skinned Hound started attacking people, in which case it probably has nothing to do with being in the Arena District. --NepheleTalk 13:31, 11 November 2008 (EST)

This is wrong, because when I took the dog to the arena to help me fight, it was attacked by branwen and sallith (Iam on the pc and x box) (Mylesjackson 17:27, 20 May 2010 (UTC))
This discussion is 1.5 years old and I think it's covered by the last bullet in the Notes section. Just to re-confirm the original assertion and Myles' own confirmation, though, I just took Ushnar's Terror into the Arena district on the PC, and it attacked Saliith and Branwen as originally noted. Robin HoodTalk 17:29, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Respawning DogEdit

I played a Khajiit and killed Ushnar's dog after he told me to attack it. I left the city, and when I came back a while later, it was back. It attacked me on sight this time though. I left again after i killed it again, and it respawned a 3rd time. Is there a script that makes the dog respawn (ex. convincing players that Ushnar keeps getting a new dog) Or is it a bug? — Unsigned comment by Lucky the Cat Guy (talkcontribs) on 31 December 2008

Yes, the dog is set to respawn every two days should it be killed. –RpehTCE 00:28, 31 December 2008 (EST)

2 houndsEdit

My first hound died, and got stuck. I'm on PC, and console resurrected it, but it's glued to its death spot. After few tries I used player.placeatme 00072DA4 (to spawn a new one). Now I'm stuck with 2 hounds, as the first one changed its mind and is now following me again. Not sure what to do with 2 of them. — Unsigned comment by 70.107.171.175 (talk) at 03:55 on 6 July 2009

Just kill one of them if you don't want 2. Lucky the Cat Guy. 03:58, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
This is a good example of why you shouldn't use the "player.placeatme" command. In the future, just try targeting the hound in console and typing "moveto (your Character's reference ID #)". If you want to get rid of the discontinuity of a copied hound target the second one in console and type "disable".--Gardimuer 23:20, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hound Hostility Fix?Edit

Does anyone have tips to make the Hound stop attacking certain NPCs who would otherwise be friendly to the PC? For instance, in my case the hound attacks/is attacked by the Gate Keeper, the Dark Seducers in Syl's private garden, and the Soldier allies in the Fringe. For some of these I was able to partially fix the problem by setting the disposition of the Hound and the other hostile party to 100 for each other. However, in some instances it is not possible to raise the Hound's disposition above 10. Lowering the Hound's aggression attribute to 9 doesn't help either.

I figure the hostility might be a result of the hound not being in a certain faction that would otherwise improve its disposition to these NPCs. Any suggestions?--Gardimuer 23:33, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Mysterious Skinned Hound DeathEdit

I'm playing as a Khajit, and was unable to start the quest. Instead, I decided to loot everything from Ushnar's house, which included the dog food. When I went upstairs, however, I noticed the purplish glow of the living dog (I am wearing the Gray Cowl), which immediately fell down and died. Ushnar's Skinned Hound in now lieing dead in his bed room, and I am unsure as to how that happened. It's not of any major importance, but does anyone have ideas? 96.235.110.83 23:51, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Ushnar turned up dead in my game, so I thought I would loot his house, and the same thing happened to me. The Skinned Hound just dropped dead as I entered the room. Very strange. 71.28.194.63 01:21, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

How to delete?Edit

I created two clones and set them as essentials, how do I delete them from the game? — Unsigned comment by 65.13.0.127 (talk) on 27 May 2010

Should the hound be put into the "permanent corpses" category?Edit

My hound died inside Benirus Manor during "Where the spirits have lease," and it never goes away. Thus, it makes a handy extra container. Can anyone verify that it is, in fact, permanent? I'm playing on the PC version. 90.225.17.64 12:44, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

There must be a way to make him immortal on Xbox 360 ? ? ? ?Edit

I really like the little guy & I have been delaying finishing the game for the first time because I really want to find a way to make him resurrect, so I can take him into even more dangerous environments.

It certainly is possible to keep him alive in most situations, I kept him alive all the way through to the completion all of the shivering isles quests, although it will most certainly require plenty of frustrating reloads when he is killed.

Once he has passed over to Cyrodil from the shivering isles, it seems that there is no way for him to go back at all, which is frustrating as he can be preserved in most situations in the isles, however in Cyrodil I have reached an impasse with him, as I now want to go around & close all of the oblivion gates that I have found, & there are towers that shoot homing fireballs in the oblivion portals which kill him with two hits, I found a couple of suggestions online that I will post here:

"i just CE my magicka to 8k then used a drain fatigue/damage fatigue for 100 points for 120 secs he stays down for 6 in-game

hours. Just have to cast it before you go into a fight"

"I'm not very good at keeping it alive, but I remember someone posting a while back about making a paintbrush cage to

keep it in."

Does anyone know if making a paintbrush cage for him will actually work? Wouldn't he just respawn in the next map you entered?

And finally, PLEASE! does anyone know a way to make these commands: -

player.placeatme 00072DA4 (to spawn a new one) and/or setessential 00072DA4 1 (to make it immortal)

work on the xbox360? There must be a way to do it, didn't someone manage to add a mod into the xbox 360 version of fallout 3?

Is it called hex editing? Can it be done that way?

I find it extremely irritating that Microsoft & Sony don't have enough respect for humankind to allow mods to be added to games on their systems, why should PC users have all of the fun? I just upgraded my xbox360 to a slim, wireless version & I'm starting to wish I had put the money into buying a more powerful laptop instead.

Does anyone know a way I can make this character immortal on my console? — Unsigned comment by 110.174.188.161 (talk) at 07:08 on 18 October 2010

The only way to do that is with the console or a mod. Since you can't do either on the XBox, there's no way of making him immortal. I'm not sure about the paintbrush cage, though - it might work. Transitioning from one map to the next isn't always guaranteed if the person (or creature) is stuck, though they'll usually free themselves when you leave their vicinity. Robin Hoodtalk 07:21, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Can you spell stack the dog and paralyse it for a wildly inordinate period of time? I used to do that to gaurds. — Unsigned comment by Datacaust (talkcontribs) at 00:27 on 15 December 2010
Creating a paintbrush cage DOES NOT work. He will appear wherever you open your next door, teleporting him out of his cage. If your planning to stay outside only then the cage would be effective but no other way.— Unsigned comment by Rainbow Smash (talkcontribs) at 21:23 on 24 October 2011

Nope, his body doesn't disappear. It's there somewhere ;) --SerCenKing Talk 13:41, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

I Think I figured out how to do this with a Khajit.Edit

Open the construction set and make a copy of the Khajit race with a different ID. This will make it so you won't be considerd a khajit, but a non-specific race. It retains all abilities and appearance, but NPCs wont consider it as such. Its a bit cheap but so is having one quest in the game be unavaialable to the entire race. I dont like that. 74.128.56.194 02:00, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

That is not finishing with a Khajiit. That is finishing with a copy of the Khajiit race. It will make problems with any place in the game where it checks your race, as it will not recognize it anywhere else unless you change those as well. You are better off just changing this one quest. --DKong27 Talk Cont 02:26, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
A more elegant solution was posted above - just use the console to advance the quest to a stage past the initial conversation. Then again, it's not like it's even an important quest so it's not like Khajiit players are missing on much. They even get to hear a funny racist comment :)--201.10.20.23 10:55, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Swimming IssueEdit

I was wandering around in Bravil and decided to see if the dog (Ushnar's Skinned Hound) could swim. When I saw he would run from the water while my player was swimming, I went on land and moved him/her into the water. I walked away from the dog, but he wouldn't follow. So, I fast-traveled to Bay Roan Stables, and when it loaded, the hound was swimming in mid-air! I don't know if this has occured to anyone else, but I decided to post this. Thanks! AAM98 02:58, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Worthless houndEdit

Seems to me the best thing to do after coddling the dog until you are sick. Is to kill it in one of your houses and use it as a container. You can't have it stay in one location like all other followers in the game which, in my opinion, should be fixed. I think it looks cool and wish I could leave it at one of my houses as a pet. Thanks for reading my rant. 360 player BERN77 14:02, 17 July 2011

- I agree actually. It's really annoying always having it following you around and I wish it could stay in one place, like in Fallout 3 which you can do with Dogmeat and Fawkes! — Unsigned comment by 86.166.199.246 (talk) on 3 April 2012

Can't Find UshnarEdit

I've gone through the quest and when I return to attempt to find Ushnar, my map marker leads me to the front of his house. (Not inside, in front) However he is not there, nor is he in the house. I've searched the city for him and have not been able to find him. He shouldnt be dead since I didnt kill him and as far as I know, noone else did. I cant finish the quest till I find him and I would really like to know if there is a consol command of if he is somewhere else. Also when I break into his house and go upstairs his skinned hound is dead on the floor. — Unsigned comment by 98.224.177.126 (talk) at 23:08 on 27 December 2011

Since you're on the PC, just type player.moveto 00015870 and this will take you right to him, no matter where he is (although if he's dead, you'll just appear where his corpse is, which may be invisible). Robin Hoodtalk 06:29, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

A cheat to keep it in one place?Edit

I heard somewhere about a Paintbrush glitch or something, that could make a barrier and maybe keep the dog in your house behind them? But then I realised that when you fast travel it would still follow you. Are there any other glitches or cheats you could use to make it stay in one place or do you have to kill it? — Unsigned comment by 86.166.199.246 (talk) on 3 April 2012

The paintbrush glitch is an old one that was fixed in later versions of the game. I believe console versions still have the glitch, but PC versions don't. Basically, paintbrushes stay exactly where you drop them, even if that's floating in mid-air, thus if you're careful, you could create a prison out of them. The only other way I can think of to keep him in place would be to create a mod that stops him from following you. Robin Hoodtalk 03:54, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Only has generic dialogueEdit

  • Sometimes, upon entering Crucible, there will be no options to talk about Bhisha. The only option is rumors (and Prophet if you have Knights of the Nine installed). If you break into his house you will also find the Skinned Hound dead.

There are a few explainations for this, however details of the circumstances are needed. SilencerSpeak 19:55, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
