Chevalier Renald's RaceEdit

So Renald's race in relation to gamespace stuff has recently been a source for discussion on the PTS channel on Discord. Opinion seems to be divided mostly between Imperial and Breton. While people have pointed out that his facial features suggest Imperial, on the Breton side there is a valid argument to be made that his name is Breton. Of course, we could wait until it can be verified by other means but some more opinions would be good.

Post your thoughts on the matter if you wish. In the meantime, I'll just removed the race for now as to hopefully curtail an edit war.--Talyyn (talk) 12:55, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

His name and title are both Breton. Seems pretty clear to me that he's Breton. (In case you were still unsure, Another Renald in ESO is a Breton. Jeancey (talk) 15:47, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

Apologies for changing it to Nord earlier. I initially assumed him to be Nord, but after attempting to recreate him I am 99% certain that he is Imperial with some unique features (such as a very light skin, very tall height and cruor red eyes). His model is not Nord and certainly not Breton. His name and title might sound Breton, but a character like Lucien Lachance is also Imperial despite having a Breton sounding name. Even though it's heavily hinted at that his true race is Tsaesci, the form he takes here definitely seems to be Imperial, so I'd suggest to go with that. Khachero (talk) 21:13, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

He's absolutely Tsaesci. His own dialog about shedding skin meshes exactly with Remanada, which calls the Dragonguard vampires. Until this quest there was controversy over whether it was Tsaesci or actual vampires, but Renald is very specifically not a vampire. He even says so. From Remanada and his dialog we can be pretty certain that he is, in fact, Tsaesci. However, he also says that he changed himself to be the guardian of the Emperor and it seems he may have changed himself to be Imperial? Between these two sources, it sounds like the Tsaesci are shapeshifters of sorts. It's known from Mysterious Akavir that they're immortal. It's really sounding like the Tsaesci are Time Lords. I'd say his model is likely Imperial, but his race is definitely Tsaesci. Sothas (talk) 11:04, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

He’s almost certainly Tsaesci, but I’m not quite certain whether he is a vampire or not. On the one hand, he displays some vampiric abilities such as transforming into a swarm of bats. He also has cruor red eyes and a pale skin, and Nisaazda refers to him as ‘old bat’. Furthermore, he states that the Dragonguard’s failure to protect the Emperor was a mistake too great to rectify in one lifetime, which kind of implies that they actively went out to attain immortality. A citizen in Hakoshae states: "Potentate Versidue-Shaie ruled Cyrodiil for hundreds of years before his death. No one is quite sure what allowed this longevity, as it certainly isn't a common trait for the Akaviri to have. One can only guess that powerful magics were at play." Hence, it kind of seems that Tsaesci do not necessarily posses an innate immortality, but that the Dragonguard and Potentates deliberately contracted some strain of vampirism in order to attain immortality. With the Potentates being the most well-known Tsaesci, this could easily lead to the general populace believing that all Tsaesci are therefore vampiric and immortal, as described in Mysterious Akavir. On the other hand, when the player asks Renald directly if the Dragonguard became vampires, he only confirms that that is how some, like Grundwulf, chose to bide their time, but that they each had to find their own paths. Yet this could still mean that Renald is a vampire of some sort, but that he does not live and act like a ‘traditional’ vampire does, while Grundwulf does as he works together with the Hollowfang Clan.
