Detailed WalkthroughEdit

When you enter Greenhill, you'll be stopped by a worried (and drunk) Bosmer named Halindor. He's the local Treethane's husband. Halindor says that everyone in town is acting strange, and that he saw some strangers in town who looked dangerous. They were carrying crates which emanated with some kind of evil energy. The strangers took one of these crates into his friend Gonlas's house, and Halindor would like you to check on him.

Gonlas's House is next to the market, near the town's northern exit. You'll find a Khajiit named Ezreba in front of the home. Her behavior is quite suspicious. You'll hear Gonlas upstairs when you enter the home. He's trapped by a foul ritual fueled by some strange red crystal which a Dar-m'Athra Shade is hovering above. Destroy the crystal to free Gonlas, then head outside to find Halindor. You'll see Ezreba being friendly with him, and telling Halindor to check in on his wife. Ezreba walks off after this interaction. Speak to Halindor and tell him what happened to Gonlas.

Halindor is horrified. He thought the people with the crystals were jewel peddlers when he first saw them, but now he's convinced other people are in danger. He asks you to check the houses east of Gonlas. Tashpir's House is closest, and Ganniel and Lothiel's House is a little further down from there. Tashpir is upstairs in his house. Ganniel and Lothiel are also upstairs in theirs. Both houses have the same red crystals in them on the second floor, their inhabitants trapped. Break the crystals and head next door from Lothiel and Ganniel's House to find Halindor in front of his house. Halindor is yelling about his wife being gone. Speak to him. He saw his wife being kidnapped by hooded figures. Ezreba was there. One of the hooded figures pinned Halindor against the wall.

Halindor asks you to try looking for his wife at Ezreba's House. He figures that if she got away, Ezreba's House would be the safest place to hide. Ezreba's House is located down the stone stairs to the west, beside the apple orchard. You'll find Treethane Bowenas inside, trapped in a dark ritual using one of those red crystals from earlier. When you destroy the crystal, the projection of a Dunmer cultist appears and says something about dro-m'Athra being unbound before disappearing. Talk to the Treethane.

"What … what was that? Thank you for saving me. Did Halindor send you?"
He did. He's looking for you as well. What happened?
"Ezreba's been talking to me for days about wanting to set up statues, art pieces, in the center of town. They're ugly and have these crystals. Anyway, when she came to talk to me today, she didn't come alone."
People in hoods?
"Yes. They were very threatening. And when Halindor showed up, they attacked me. Dragged me down here. Ezreba apologized the entire time. She said she didn't want to be doing this."
Where did she go?
"She kept talking about the temple ruins. Something about the ruins being the source … she was beside herself. She kept saying "just don't hurt him." I don't know. I'm sorry, everything happened so fast."
I'll find her.

At this point in the quest, almost every friendly NPC in town (including the ones you saved earlier) will have a strange blue and black mist emanating off of them; you also cannot speak to them. You need to go to the temple and find Ezreba. The temple lies south of Boewnas's house, where you were talking to Halindor before leaving to find the Treethane. There's a trapdoor in the ruined temple that leads to the Catacombs.

You'll find Halindor just inside Greenhill Catacombs, sitting down. His head is throbbing. Talk to him.

"Ugh … my head."
What happened to you?
"I was looking through the temple ruins and somebody jumped me. By the Green, my head hurts worse than the time I won the troll arena jackpot and we … erm.
Bowenas! Did you find her? Is she safe?"
Yes, Bowenas is safe. Did you see anyone? Did you see Ezreba?
"Yes! She ran past me just a moment ago. I called to her, but she just kept running. Heard her crying as she ran."
Get out of here as soon as you can. I'm going after Ezreba.
"I will. Just … be careful down there. The people in robes, the cultists—they're everywhere!"
Thank you, Halindor.

Continue into the catacombs. You'll see Ezreba run through the first hallway. Follow her to the depths; here, you'll find Balras Arenim channeling a spell into one of the red crystals. Defeat Balras, destroy the crystal, and follow Ezreba deeper into the Catacombs. She stops over the corpse of someone named Hizurrdo and kneels. Speak with Ezreba and find out what's going on.

"You have caught Ezreba, miserable wretch that she is. She will not fight you."
Explain yourself. What's going on here?
"Ezreba just … she just wanted to save her husband. A week ago, dark pilgrims arrived in town. Members of the Stonefire cult. They came to this one's home in the night. They took him. Now … look."
This is your husband?
"Yes, they took him so that she … she had to help them place those crystals. They did not tell her at first, but as soon as Ezreba saw one she knew. They summon the Dro-m'Athra."
You'll need to turn yourself in to Bowenas, Ezreba.
"Ezreba will turn herself in. You have nothing more to fear from this one. She is so sorry. So very, very sorry for what she's done."
I'll be right behind you.

You need to head back outside with Ezreba and speak to Treethane Bowenas. The Treethane will thank you for your efforts and reward you for saving Greenhill.

NotesEdit

  • Ezreba doesn't exist in the town before starting the quest.
  • While displayed as a hint required to progress the quest, speaking to Ezreba at Gonlas' house's front door isn't required.
  • Ganniel, Lothiel and the amplification crystal affecting them won't exist in their accessible ruined house before starting the quest or reaching the related objective.
  • The objective description to enter the catacombs already states you found the trapdoor leading to them while you are still inside Ezreba's house.
  • Although the entire interior is accessible upon entering, Ezreba and Balras Arenim won't exist in the rest of the catacombs until speaking with Halindor at the entrance.
  • Despite Balras Arenim exclaiming for the Dro-m'Athra to free themselves and attack you after reaching the first room of the catacombs, none can be found as enemies inside afterward.

BugsEdit

  • The dialogue options when speaking to Treethane Bowenas about Halindor's drinking appear in red when they are not pivotal decisions towards the quest. The dialogue option that prompts these to appear can even be repeated. Furthermore, when repeating the dialogue option, only the choice you selected the first time will appear, still in red. ?
  • Several of the villagers don't appear possessed after saving Treethane Bowenas. ?
