You first encounter an evidently wounded Daren lying on a makeshift bed in Neramo's camp. If you speak with him at that point, he will reveal that Vimy Lacroix saved his life when mercenaries attacked:
- "Thank the Three Vimy got me out. Those mercenaries planned to … to use me as bait for those damned Dwarven machines.
Be careful in there, or you'll wind up with a shattered leg too."
Fortunately, he and the other members of the expedition manage to make it out of the ruins with their lives. You can speak with him at their camp outside of the ruins, where he thanks you for helping to save his life.
- "It feels good to breathe in the ash again.
I may carry a limb for the rest of my days, but at least I have days to spare. Thanks again, f'lah."
