Vows and OathsEdit

Blessing the HandfastEdit

When you approach before accepting the related quest you can overhear Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear berating the gathered Eagleseers and Six-Fords. If you speak to Chief Six-Ford before speaking to the Chief-of-Chiefs he'll say:

"An outsider, here? You are an affront to both the ancestors and the spirits. Away with you!"

Once you've agreed to help Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear with resolving the handfasting matter, he'll be more talkative:

"First the chief-of-chiefs demands I offer my son to the cursed Eagleseers. Then she involves an outsider in the matter just to shame us.
Very well, outsider. Offer your blessing to my son and the Eagleseer sow so we can finish this."
You don't seem happy about this impending marriage.
"Why should I be? Not only am I forced to endure the presence of the Eagleseers, I must allow my son Madearn to marry one of them!
The chief-of-chiefs asks much of us, but I will not let my son go unattended."
Tell me about your son.
"Madearn is an adequate scout, but he's a sorry hunter and an abysmal fighter.
I suppose if there's any good in all this, it's that Chief Eagleseer is fool enough to accept such a poor match for his daughter."
Why don't you and Chief Eagleseer get along?
"That … is none of your business, outsider.
I am here and doing as my chief-of-chiefs demands. Let us leave it at that."

If you speak to him again, he'll say:

"We have exchanged enough words, outsider. If you have more to say, talk to the chief-of-chiefs.
Better yet, go to the handfasting cave and give my son your blessing."

The Lover's CoilEdit

Return to the gathering at the ring and Vateshran Barth will be retelling the tale of the Lover's Coil. Speak to Chief Six-Ford before speaking to the Chief-of-Chiefs and he'll remark:

"What games are the vateshran and our children playing at? I don't like this, outsider."

Speaking to the Chief-of-Chiefs, you have to decide to convince Eslyn and Madearn to go along with the handfasting or help the couple find another way.

Go through with the handfastingEdit

"Something has gone wrong. I can sense it. This must be your doing, outsider. I knew it was a mistake to involve you in our affairs."

After the handfasting is complete:

"My business here is concluded, outsider. My clan has new allies now. That will take some getting used to."

Madearn changes his mindEdit

If you told Madearn that you can't force him to make a decision, he'll have a surprising response at the ceremony:

Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "Ah, here they come. Let us complete the rite."
Chief Eagleseer: "Finally. Let's get on with it already."
Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "Eslyn of the Eagleseer, Madearn of the Six-Ford, will you take up the vow of marriage?"
Madearn: "No. I can't do this. I am promised to Drisene, of Clan Six-Ford!"
Drisene: "Madearn!"
Chief Eagleseer: "This insult won't stand, Six-Fords! You'll see your treachery matched with our flint."
Chief Six-Ford: "This was not my doing, Eagleseer, but if it's a fight you want, a fight you'll get."
Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "This can't be happening."

After Madearn's revelation:

"Madearn and Drisene, all this time … I never knew. My son is a fool for choosing a flimsy promise over the well-being of his clan."

Find another wayEdit

"If my chief-of-chiefs wills it, the Six-Ford will hunt you down. Take care, the next time you speak with her, outsider."

Once you've spoken to Eslyn and Madearn, return to the circle:

Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "Here it comes."
Chief Eagleseer: "What of the handfasting?"
Eslyn: "There will be no handfasting, father. We don't need it. This feud is foolish."
Madearn: "She's right, father. We don't need a handfasting to make us lower our swords. Heed the vateshran's tale."
Chief Six-Ford: "The Eagleseer waif has poisoned your mind, boy. You shame me!"
Chief Eagleseer: "You lay this at my daughter's feet, Six-Ford? My warriors and I will make you regret those words."
<The two chiefs and Evroch walk away>
Chief-of-Chiefs Cannear: "Our chance for peace is gone."
Eslyn: "Gone for today, perhaps. But not forever. Madearn and I will make sure of it."
Madearn: "Aye. We will spread the vateshran's tale to our clans until enough heed it."

After the quest you can find the chief outside the ring:

"My son has brought shame to our clan. Had the chief-of-chiefs not been watching, that would have ended quite differently."
