Oblivion talk:Spell Tomes

Page CheckEdit

I'm going to try and step lightly here because I don't want anybody to read this the wrong way, but what happened to the write up that was previously here? Both Templates have been removed which are going to have to be put back up in about 12 hours. The paragraph that now replaces the previous one is both wrong and redundant. The Tomes add a daily use spell, not a skill. The sentence after it states it adds a skill not a spell, then says it adds a spell. Tombs is misspelled, and I haven't heard about the treasure hunter theme, it simply says it might motivate Mages to treasure hunt more for the powerful bonus spells. I didn't want to revert it because I feel some of the new edits should definately be there, like the "unreleased banner", but most of it now seems too much like the official page and a lot of info is now wrong. Again, I apologize Aristeo, I'm not tryin to be bumhurt or anything, however it ends up is fine with me, I just thought I might put it out there so you can check it again or get Neph's opinion or something. --AlbinoMudcrab 12:18, 30 August 2006 (EDT)

I replaced my paragraph with the one you wrote, and I made some modifications to it. Because this is not a quest, I removed the quest header. Everything else was a result of a faulty merge of mine that resulted after I thought this article didn't exist, and I hope I fixed it. --Aristeo 14:49, 30 August 2006 (EDT)

Raw ListingEdit

These data are from a thread on the official forum. It should contain the full listing of all spells added by this mod. I don't have the time to nicely format them for the actual page for now. --Gez 10:43, 1 September 2006 (EDT)

There's a bunch of missing data as well. FormIDs (which you'd need to give yourself the spell without the tome - editor names are useless), magicka cost, and spell level (Novice/Apprentice/Journeyman/Expert/Master) info would be needed...--TheRealLurlock 13:19, 1 September 2006 (EDT)
Spell level can be extrapolated from the list of books, which I'm adding now. --Gez 14:08, 1 September 2006 (EDT)
Again, editor names are useless. They're only used in the editor. If you want information that's useful to those playing the game, you need to get the FormIDs instead. And magicka cost is particularly important, especially considering that as I understand, these are supposedly a good deal lower than the cost of an equivalent spell created at the Spellmaking altar would be. --TheRealLurlock 15:26, 1 September 2006 (EDT)
Also it would help to know what school some of these spells are in. There's quite a few cross-school spells, but in terms of casting, only the most powerful effect counts, so it'd help to know what belongs where. --TheRealLurlock 15:33, 1 September 2006 (EDT)
Actually, except for spell costs, the useless editor names contain the informations. Elemental Flare deals 15 damage on a target, and is a novice spell. School is destruction, since it's a damage spell. Thunderclap is a journeyman spell and is illusion since it paralyzes. And so on... I don't know the spell costs, I don't have the mod. As I said, these infos are from one of the threads on the official forum. Someone exported these data. --Gez 17:07, 1 September 2006 (EDT)
What I believe Lurlock is trying to say is that for some of the spells the school isn't so obvious. Pride of Hirstaang, for example: is it restoration or conjuration? Orum's Aquatic Escape: is it illusion or alteration? That's critical information to include in a table, since that dictates which school you need to be expert (or journeyman) in to cast the spell. And although the names do contain a fair bit of information, the FormIDs are what is needed at the console if you want to access the spell. I'm not expecting you to go and track down any of this info, it's just to explain why no one is immediately creating a table with the information that you've provided --Nephele 17:19, 1 September 2006 (EDT)
I've put them all in. Can't guarantee they're correct, as there was a lot of missing data. In many cases, I couldn't tell if spell effects were meant to be Touch, Self, or Target, which would make a difference in spell cost. Also, not sure if the magicka cost for these spells will be at all accurate, because these are the prices you'd get for making your own at the Spellmaking altar. There's a good chance these will be lower (or else it's even more of a useless mod than I thought). Plus, for some spell effects (Sun Damage, Stunted Magicka), I don't know the base costs, so those were not factored in. As for schools, I'm at least pretty sure they're all in the right place now, based on comparative values of the multiple effects involved. I didn't bother with the magicka costs in the Destruction section, because there's so many of them and I got tired of it. Oh, there's also three spells in the Restoration section (the vampire aura ones) for which no duration was given. So I couldn't even attempt to calculate those. Someone who actually has the mod will have to make any further corrections. --TheRealLurlock 19:22, 3 September 2006 (EDT)
  • I've moved the Raw Listing to Oblivion:Spell Tomes/Raw Listing to keep this talk page from being unnecessarily cluttered. --TheRealLurlock Talk 21:23, 20 June 2007 (EDT)
Where did the raw listing go? 173.32.11.67 21:39, 7 November 2008 (EST) (Helper Unknown)
It was deleted because it was no longer necessary. –RpehTCE 01:46, 8 November 2008 (EST)

  • So has it been established what one types as a console command to add these spells (or the spell tomes) to a character's inventory with the player.addspell/player.additem xxxxxxxx?

Spell Tomes? Where?Edit

Spell Tomes is the very first download I paid for on Xbox Live. That was about 2 months ago. Since then I have gathered all available Oblivion mods and accepted all updates but I have yet to see a single Spell Tome. I understand that they're random but what are the odds? I would have a better chance if I'd spent my 2 bucks on the state lottery. Has anyone else had a problem with this mod? If so did you find a solution?--OGRastamon 02:48, 20 November 2006 (EST)

I've tried to add some info on spell tome locations to the page based on what I could extract from the construction set. It seems like most chests in the game have a roughly 2% chance of containing a spell tome; boss-level chests in conjurer dungeons should have a roughly 25% chance of containing one. If you want to confirm that the spell tomes really are installed, your best bet is to visit Fort Cedrian and see if you can find the one conjurer added by the mod... he will always be carrying one spell tome. Other than that, my only suggestion is to try boosting your character's Luck; it is rumored that the chances of finding loot is improved if you increase luck (in particular right before opening the door to enter a dungeon zone). I haven't tested this, but I have seen other scripts that do take luck into account, so it seems possible that luck plays a role, here, too (in other words, the 2% chance may only be if your character's luck is 100, for all I know... it could be that for luck=50, that drops to a 1% chance). I hope that helps! --Nephele 14:26, 30 November 2006 (EST)
Addendum: I just tested one particular conjurer level boss chest, and was able to get a spell tome to appear after a few tries. I picked a particularly easy chest for such a test, so if you're interested, you might want to try testing there too. It's the boss-level chest at the end of Ceyatatar, in Ceyatatar Gorihame. What makes it convenient is that there's a trap door in the forest that leads right to the chest; the trap door is west-southwest of the main entrance to ceyatatar (if I position my in-game map so that the western arm of the ceyatatar complex is just barely visible at the top right corner of the screen, there's a large rock at the bottom left corner of the screen (the rock is also notable when you get there for having a tree growing out of the middle of it). The trapdoor is on the south side of that rock. There is no map marker for the trapdoor, but it's there even if you haven't gone through the dungeon). You can save right before opening the trapdoor and try reloading a few times until you find a spell tome. Also, the chest has a 100% of one scroll, and a 25% chance of a second scroll, which means the odds are about as good as they get. --Nephele 15:11, 30 November 2006 (EST)

Pride of HirstaangEdit

Is there a reason that Pride of Hirstaang says Summon Bear instead of Summon Black Bear? I felt that the latter is better because otherwise you need to click on the link to check if it black or brown.--70.210.68.183 22:59, 16 March 2007 (EDT)

I suppose mainly because the name of the effect is just "Summon Bear", and for consistency we try to use the names as specified in the game. I've added Black Bear in parentheses, with a link to the exact creature that gets summoned. Hopefully that helps. --Nephele 16:22, 17 March 2007 (EDT)

Can spell tomes provide spells with a lower skill requirement?Edit

I have a Flame Shield Tome (30% for 60 sec) with a Journeyman Requirement. According to this site that spell should be a Master spell. I added the spell to check if it was just described incorrectly in the tome, but I don't have enough magicka to attempt to cast it. This is on the Xbox 360, if that matters.

The game has mistakenly tagged the Flame Shield spell as a journeyman spell, i.e., its internal editor name is "StandardFireShield3Journeyman". However, the spell really is a master-level spell (as determined by the game mechanics based upon the magicka cost of the spell, without any relation to the spell's name or what the developers may think the spell requires). If you fortify your magicka enough (and/or fortify your alteration skill enough) the text will change to "Alteration skill of 100 required". In other words, no, the spell tomes do not allow you to cast spells that you otherwise can't cast. The tomes just contain incorrect information sometimes about the spell requirements. --NepheleTalk 17:42, 20 June 2007 (EDT)

Connections to Morrowind/BloodmoonEdit

Just a perculiarity I noticed- some of the spell tomes names are linked to Morrowind- I have some examples--

Pride of Hirstaang- The Hirstaang Forest- a forest on the isle of Solthseim.

Karstaag's Breath- Karstaag- a powerful frost giant.

Aundae's Aura- The Aundae Clan- a clan of vampires who reside in Vvardenfell.

Berne's Aura- The Berne Clan- a clan of vampires who reside in Vvardenfell.

Quarra's Aura- The Quarra Clan- a clan of vampires who reside in Vvardenfell.

Does anybody think these connections should be mentioned on the Spell tomes page?

Perhaps they should be listed on the "Historical References" page? — Unsigned comment by 68.184.143.171 (talk)

Levelled Tomes?Edit

Are Spell Tomes "levelled?" That is, if I'm say, level 20, can I expect to ever find Blink? Or if I'm level 1, would I ever see Touch of Death? Ong elvin 08:41, 24 January 2008 (EST)

BodiesEdit

Do peoples bodies have spell tomes on them? — Unsigned comment by 99.237.148.26 (talk)

I've never really taken notice, but off the top of my head, I think yes, they can hold Spell Tomes. Ong elvin 07:07, 7 April 2008 (EDT)
Yes, the tomes are added to the scrolls leveled lists, so wherever you can find scrolls, you have a chance of finding a tome instead. For example, I have found tomes on the bodies of conjurers. Mind you, I had to kill the conjurers first. --Gaebrial 05:46, 10 April 2008 (EDT)
Hmm... I think I also pickpocketed a spell tome out of a conjurer once... dunno... foggy memory. Ong elvin 06:55, 14 April 2008 (EDT)

I want to make a mod of this pluginEdit

I want to make a mod that is a replica of this plugin. Is this illegal?99.237.166.44 09:14, 24 May 2008 (EDT)

Also, if it isn't illegal can I please have information like the prices for the tomes if they have any? 99.237.166.44 09:16, 24 May 2008 (EDT)
It sounds questionable to me - Bethesda does charge money for this mod, and you'd be giving it away for free, essentially depriving them of the profits for the mod. However, in this case it's a grey area. If you made a mod from scratch, which just happens to be similar (not identical) to this mod, nobody could really claim copyright violation. I think that's an inherent problem with Bethesda charging for mods that are fairly simple to create on your own. At any rate, technically, yes, I'd say it's illegal, though I doubt you'd get in too much trouble for it. However, my advice would be to make your own mod that's similar, but don't make an exact replica - many such mods probably already exist anyhow. At least if you create an original mod you don't have to worry about it being shot down with a Cease & Desist. --TheRealLurlock Talk 09:46, 24 May 2008 (EDT)
Thank You 99.237.166.44 10:07, 24 May 2008 (EDT)
I've sorta done this but its not very complete and it's available [[1]]. An important part (for me) is exactly which loot lists have tomes and which don't. I know that, most likely, Deadra don't have the scrolls, but I need more information. If, you are not willing to give this information I'm ok with that. just say why. 173.32.11.67 20:48, 27 October 2008 (EDT) (Helper Unknown)
It's all a bit complicated. If you copy content over from an official plugin, than that's illegal. But if you copy on how to add spells when reading a tome, the necessary scripts, than that's legal. There can be no copyright on methods on how to solve a problem. So in this case, if you duplicate the scripts, it's OK. But if you copy the literal texts and names, than it could be. However, with this mod there seems to be little actual content, so I don't think you will run into problems there.
I'm guessing it's OK to check the official plugin for how the leveled lists look like (from my earlier argument), and duplicating that in your own mod. --Timenn < talk > 13:13, 28 October 2008 (EDT)
One of the problems with checking the plugin is that... I don't have it.(Isn't that suprising??)173.32.11.67 21:34, 28 October 2008 (EDT) (Helper Unknown)

Sun DamageEdit

If you find a spell with sun damage and are able to cast it, is the sun damage spell effect added to the list of effects at the spellmaking altar?Amantius Allectus 18:34, 3 August 2008 (EDT)

Nope. Just tried it and Sun Damage doesn't appear in the list either for the Spellmaking or the Enchanting altar. –RpehTCE 07:03, 4 August 2008 (EDT)

Dang. Thanks for trying.Amantius Allectus 10:49, 4 August 2008 (EDT)

Player-Made SpellsEdit

If a person made a spell with the exact same name as one that was added by Spell Tomes or another plugin or a mod, what would happen to the player-made spell? Helper Unknown 08:14, 17 August 2008 (EDT)

You can't create a spell with the same name after the mod has been installed, but I don't know what happens if you install Spell Tomes after creating spells of the same name. I tried uninstalling the mod on my copy but kept getting the message about a spell of the same name existing, which is odd but obviously false. I'll try again at some point, unless somebody else can do this one? –RpehTCE 11:37, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
Okay, got it working. To test, I started a new game (without Spell Tomes installed) then used the console to make myself a member of the Mages Guild (so I could use spellmaking altars). I created a new spell called "Searing Flare" - fire damage 3pts for 4s on target and then saved and quit. Re-enabling Spell Tomes, I reloaded and used the console to give myself the Searing Flare tome. When I read it, I got the "Searing Flare added" message and had two spells of the same name in my list; one the 4s version I created and one the 5s one from the tome. So basically, there's no problem. –RpehTCE 13:00, 17 August 2008 (EDT)
Thanks! Helper Unknown 17:09, 17 August 2008 (EDT)

Minor Bound ArmorEdit

There is no spell called Minor Bound Armor in the construction set section of the conjuration section of the Oblivion:Spells page. Why(insert question mark here because I can`t type it) 99.238.44.36 10:12, 25 August 2008 (EDT) (Helper Unknown)

Because somebody missed it off. Now fixed. –RpehTCE 10:52, 25 August 2008 (EDT)

Spell IDsEdit

Please be gentle if this is a stupid question, but what is the intention of the "xx" that precedes the spell IDs on this page? (e.g., Freezing Shard is xx001205) I assume some number is supposed to be substituted here, but what number? Since this occurs throughout the site, I would also assume the convention is explained somewhere -- but again, where? Just trying to educate myself. -- Wordmama 14:44, 11 April 2009 (EDT)

I think it has to do with the number of mods you have installed, but I can't remember the details. --Darth NANAME 14:58, 11 April 2009 (EDT)
I looked it up, and I think I found an answer here. I hope that helps.--Darth NANAME 15:07, 11 April 2009 (EDT)
Yes, thanks, that does the trick. Much obliged! -- Wordmama 15:56, 11 April 2009 (EDT)
It's also explained here. --NepheleTalk 15:58, 11 April 2009 (EDT)

well im having trouble wondering why in the where "spirits have to leese quest" in the basement where the undead necromancer is on the writing desk next to him there is a book called the "tome of the undead" and i dont know if it is a spell tome book or not and if so how do you use them.besides if there are any disclaiming about what im saying about the tome of undead just check talk to the beirus guy in the tavern in anvil the one inside the city— Unsigned comment by 71.52.229.233 (talk) on 9 February 2010

I think you mean this book, if so, then it isn't a spell tome. You can find all the tomes in the main page, under the column that says "Tome Name". Those are the unique spells that are added by the plug-in, but there are also tomes with normal spells (e.g. you can find a spell tome called "Summon Dremora Lord Tome") and you only need to read them to acquire the spell. --S'drassa T2M 14:52, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Summon BearEdit

If you get The Pride of Hirstaang tome and use the spell, will the summon bear spell be available in the spell making altar? Or not?--VergilSparda 18:33, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

I'd like a reply please.--VergilSparda 14:27, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
UESP is edited by volunteers and if nobody responds to your question, it's because they didn't notice it, don't know or don't care. Hectoring people for a reply is not acceptable.
Looking in the CS, the answer appears to be "no", but if you can't be bothered to test it in game, I certainly can't. rpeh •TCE 15:45, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
I know it's a bit late but I tried it the other day and no you cannot make a custom summon bear spell.79.97.40.245 15:22, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Spell Tomes Problem?Edit

I bought the Spell Tomes for the XBox 360, my game is up-to-date (As far as I know), and I hear that a conjurer appears outside of Fort Cedrian with one spell tome on his person, I go there, but he isn't anywhere outside, only 2 bandits. I also hear that he can find you, i waited one in-game week and he still didn't find me, there should also been spell tome in the second floor of the arcane university tower thing, but I cant find it either, any help?

Please reply?--Aldos Othran
The most likely reason is that he fell into a river or something and can't get out or that he got into a fight from which he couldn't escape. There's no point looking near Fort Cedrian because he starts running towards you as soon as the extension is installed. If waiting for a week didn't cause him to appear, he's probably not going to do so. rpeh •TCE 08:17, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
When you waited, were you outdoors? The conjurer stops trying to find you every time you enter a building, dungeon, etc. In answer to the second part of your question, I don't see anything that adds a spell tome to the Arcane University or any other fixed location. If you need to be sure that Spell Tomes is installed correctly, you can either wait until one shows up in loot somewhere, or start a new game and just wait for a week or so at the exit of the Imperial Sewers. Robin Hoodtalk 08:56, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
Is there a way to find this Conjurer? I didn't know he existed, so I didn't wait. Can he be located via the console, or is he just gone? FMPhoenixHawk (talk) 01:16, 21 April 2013 (GMT)

Not workingEdit

I got the DLC for my PC, and it's the first enabled, and only DLC loaded. I was wondering, is it out of total DLC/plugins total, or just enabled? I'm also wondering what's up with the SpellID, cause I tried 010011EA for the Summon Bear spell effect (instead of tome). Help is appreciated

LuckEdit

Does luck have anything to do with the number of tomes you find? Lucien LachanceDB 03:04, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

No. The only thing luck affects is your effective skill scores. See Luck for more details. Robin Hoodtalk 06:09, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

How people produce itEdit

I have been wondering, how people produce a spell tome. The only know method is using the Atronach Forge in skyrim, but certainly it is not how people make it in skyrim.(Vvardfell 02:10, 21 January 2012 (UTC))

You don't "produce" them in Oblivion—they're randomly placed treasure just like scrolls or any other magic items. Robin Hoodtalk 04:48, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
I am not talking about in-game, but lore. You remind me, scroll is also an item that are commonly used, but player can never found out how they are made. — Unsigned comment by Vvardfell (talkcontribs) on 21 January 2012 (GMT)
Scrolls can be made in Morrowind by enchanting pieces of paper. You cannot make spell tomes, and there's no lore behind them. --Legoless 01:34, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

can you find the tome if you already have the spellEdit

If you buy a spell from a merchant, can you find the corresponding tome afterwards, or can you only find tomes of spells you don't have yet? Also, can you find more than one copy of the same tome? — Unsigned comment by 69.249.24.50 (talk) at 02:22 on 13 May 2012 (GMT)

The tomes you find aren't affected by the spells that you know. You can obtain multiple tomes for a spell you've already learned. --Legoless 01:29, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Superior Bound ArmorEdit

Superior Bound Armor just dropped off a conjurer. I was in waterfront area while doing the elven maiden for the thieves guild when this happened. I'm on Xbox i thought this couldn't drop? has anyone else found this?--Maldini (talk) 03:24, 14 October 2012 (GMT)

Hmm...I see the spell and the book in the game data, but no actual items (like the armor itself) named Superior Bound Armor. eshetalk 16:47, 6 November 2012 (GMT)
Well, the article says it's available as a spell tome. Might be notable, since its unavailable without the plug-in. —Legoless (talk) 17:32, 6 November 2012 (GMT)
It is part of the construction set, and isn't normally available without the plugin. I have had it drop, along with a few that I didn't expect, still haven't gotten the bear spells. FMPhoenixHawk (talk) 01:18, 21 April 2013 (GMT)

Existing Spells E and F switchedEdit

The notes E and F for the Existing Spells table appear to be switched: The spells marked with F have always been available eventhough the note says they weren't, whereas the ones marked with E are not available without the plug-in and only become available through tomes. Someone please verify and fix! --31.24.13.64 18:38, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out! I verified the notes in the Construction Set and fixed them. The codes for the unobtainable tomes were actually named "Unobtainable", so the notes were just mixed up. —Dillonn241 (talk) 18:54, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

The page is missing two Spell Tomes (Ice Bolt and Greater Dispel)Edit

Hello! The name's VoicesFromTheDark. I'm planning to collect all the Spell Tomes in the game on a single character. While doing preparations and making spreadsheets for that occasion, I decided to verify the UESP list of Spell Tomes against the Construction Set list of Spell Tomes, and found some missing ones. As best as I can count, the UESP page currently lists 284 total Spell Tomes (where 3 of them are unobtainable, since they're not in loot lists). However, when counting the ones in the Construction Set, I got to 286 total. The two missing ones are Ice Bolt (Expert Destruction spell) and Greater Dispel (Journeyman Mysticism spell). Both are obtainable in loot. I'm not comfortable yet editing a page, so I'm leaving this as a discussion thread so it can be verified and eventually added. If I'm mistaken (or these have been left out on purpose), please do let me know, so I can update my own spreadsheet! VFTD (talk) 20:24, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

I don't have the Spell Tomes DLC to check directly in the CS myself, but the tome IDs for both of these spells are listed on the Spells page, and since you've checked in the CS I'm going to go ahead and say that these two spells were probably omitted by accident. I've gone ahead and added them to the page. Thanks for double-checking this and letting us know! — Wolfborn(Howl) 04:17, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
