Acquiring Drain AttributeEdit

When i contracted the dampworm disease from a zombie, i was given the drain attribute spell effect at the altar, so being an orc or downloading the orrey expansion are not the only ways to acquire this skill. Hope it helps ! :) — Unsigned comment by 172.159.30.9 (talk) at 15:52 on 28 January 2007‎

Great tip, because I'd love to figure out a few reports I've read about people acquiring spell effects such as drain attribute. The only problem is, I couldn't get it to work. I tried giving my character several diseases (including Dampworm) at the console, but I never got the effects to show up at the spellmaking altar. Just to be sure, I fought a bunch of zombies until one gave me a disease (Rockjoint in my case, which also has a Drain Attribute effect), but it still didn't show up at the altar. This is with my spell effect test character who has 100 skill in all magical schools but doesn't know any spells (so I can be completely sure where magical effects are coming from). With the diseases, the effect definitely shows up in the Active Effects menu, but showing up as an active effect doesn't automatically mean that it will show up at the altar. I'm running oblivion patched and without any mods. Any chance you've installed a mod that might be affecting your gameplay? --Nephele 13:51, 28 January 2007 (EST)
Oops, sorry, my mistake. I went back and tested this again today, and now it works; I'm not sure what I did differently yesterday. --Nephele 23:07, 29 January 2007 (EST)
I was trying to make a good assassin's weapon so i needed the drain endurance enchantment. I went to the Imperial City Sewers and contracted swamp fever from a mud crab, which drains endurance and strength yet when i went back to the spell making altar, and enchanting altar, the drain attribute spell isn't there. I'm playing on xbox 360 and have all the latest patches so I dunno if that makes a difference. I've restarted my xbox twice in case that was what would fix it but it wasn't. This sucks cause now I have to pay to get the orrery download which I wasn't planning on doing. — Unsigned comment by 209.89.35.44 (talk) at 05:17 on 17 February 2007
You may also want to read the related question from earlier today at the Reference Desk. It seems that there is some additional random element here that has not yet been identified, but it is definitely possible to get the drain endurance effect to appear from a disease. So you might want to hold off on paying for the orrery download and just try a couple more times. --Nephele 00:26, 17 February 2007 (EST)
I've been doing more tests and the way they've been going I'm starting to suspect that it may be a bug that enables Drain Attribute to start to show up. I have a somewhat strange test character that I use for these tests (a Khajiit who is able to cast absolutely no spells and has no racial abilities, but has 100 in all spellcasting skills and is a member of the Arcane U to get access to the spellmaking altar: I can be absolutely sure where any spellmaking effect comes from). I have some saves with this character at a few different levels.
  • If I start the game fresh and load the character's level 1 save, give her a disease using the console (player.addspell 9840d, to give dampworm), then check at the spellmaking altar nothing appears.
  • Every time I load the level 3 save, for some reason drain attribute is already available. I have no idea how it got there (according to her stats page, she caught a disease at one point, but it's definitely been cured already). I'll be looking into this more.
  • Now for glitchy part. If I've previously loaded the level 3 save, then load the level 1 save (exact same one as above) and give her a disease, now the effect shows up at the spellmaking altar. Take away the disease, the effect disappears. The only difference from the first case is that I haven't restarted the entire game in between.
I've gone through this sequence a few times, so its very reproducible. It seems like once you've got one character with the drain attribute effect, any subsequent characters you load will be able to get it by catching a disease. Some internal game switch seems to get turned on. But it's going to take more tests (alot of which involve restarting the whole game and are therefore pretty slow, boring tests) to figure out what first turns on that internal game switch.
I just did a couple more tests: just loading any character who is an orc turns on the switch. So a trick I'm betting will work even on the Xbox (I'll test this too in a bit) is to start a new game, and set up a new orc character. Immediately save the game, keep it around in case you need to do this again. Then load your real character, get infected with a disease, and visit the spellmaking altar (without restarting the game). The effect should appear! --Nephele 13:56, 17 February 2007 (EST)

() OK, I've declared it official and added it to the article page. After testing on both the PC and Xbox 360, I was able to get Drain Attribute to appear for a character using the steps now outlined in the notes. I'd welcome any feedback on whether other people are also able to reliably use this trick. It's possible there are other ways to exploit diseases to get the Drain Attribute effect; if anyone else can find a reproducible way to do it, feel free to add some notes. --Nephele 22:26, 19 February 2007 (EST)

I'll second your decision there. Reproducible for me (multiple times) on XBOX 360. Working exactly as stated above. Thanks! -Iain 81.79.50.183 16:01, 22 February 2007 (EST)
Great to hear that it's working for someone else (and that someone else can understand the instructions!). I realized after posting that I had overlooked the full Xbox test: I never uninstalled the Orrery plugin on Xbox. Since I'd done PC tests without the Orrery, it seemed likely to not be a major oversight, but it's good to hear that you were able to do it on your setup, too. --Nephele 16:15, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Drain AttributeEdit

The glitch via disease/orc char worked for me. Although at first I misread and thought the page was listing two diseases that worked, getting the vampire disease... Didn't work.

Then I aquired some rando disease from the sewers (dispite my highelf resistance!) and it worked.

Confirmed. I pulled off the Orc trick, and the main (non-Orc) character wasn't even affected by any disease when I did it. So maybe under some circumstances, having been afflicted by a disease in the past is all that's needed. 82.59.89.156 20:21, 2 June 2009 (EDT)
Question to the masters:
Since with Drain Skill the trick works, is it possible to use the Drain Attribute effect on enchanted apparel to increase attributs beyond 100?

quick questionEdit

Im going to try to use the 4th way to get drain attribute affect which is to get a disease and then load an orc charactor, If use some ingredients that drain attribute will it also work? Arny 10:03, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Drain Attribute for Spellmaking & Enchanting(PS3)Edit

I was going to try the fourth method listed here but I found I did not need to go through all the steps. All I had to do to get a Drain Attribute spell for enchanting and spell making was: 1.Catch a drain attribute disease. 2.Make a cheap Drain Attribute spell at the Arcane University.Devilush 20:29, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Just tried this, caught Feeble Limb and yet the effect was not available for spell making at the altar. Is there a step I missed? FMPhoenixHawk (talk) 05:56, 15 July 2013 (GMT)

Adquiring the effect in shivering islesEdit

I added an extra way to adquire the effect, someone might want to edit it for proper format and english--Wizy 03:59, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

At a glance, the formatting and English look fine. I'm just not sure whether we document SI-specific methods on pages like this or not. I think we do, but I've left it for another Patroller to confirm. Robin Hoodtalk 07:58, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

The sixth wayEdit

I didnt use the glitch with the orcish race. I just had a Breton with 100 Destruction skill and an attribute draining disease. I like such hidden opportunities in games.
