< Mod / Oblivion: Oblivion Mod: PCS: Graphics Card Issues

ProblemEdit

The screen turns black; only the HUD and menus are visible.

Cause - Bad Fog SettingEdit

This problem is caused by a fog setting being set at 0.

Solution: Apply an NVIDIA black screen fix.

Solution: Enable the NVIDIA fog fix in the Tweak Assorted section of the Bashed Patch.

Cause - Video Card Drivers ConflictEdit

This issue can also occur if there is some sort of conflict between Oblivion and the video/graphics card drivers.

Solution: Update your video card drivers:

Solution: Sometimes, there is a bad release or support for the game has been dropped, and you need to rollback your drivers to try to find a good fit.

Cause - Overtaxed video cardEdit

This appears mostly on computers running Nvidia's Geforce 7xxx and 8xxx series video cards

Solution: Downclocking the video card and/or changing the video card's driver seems to fix this problem on most computers.

Solution: Disabling the HDR feature may help solve this problem.

Solution: Disabling AGP fast writes on AGP-based video cards may fix this glitch as well.

Solution: Setting "int shadows" to 0 solves this problem when using HDR (tested on a GeForce 8800 GTX overclocked from PNY).

Solution: Reset the game's graphics through the console.

  • Hit the tilde key (~) to bring up the console. Type "CAL" and hit enter.
  • Hit the tilde key again.

Additional InformationEdit

Although this is mainly a problem for NVIDIA cards, there are mods for which this bad setting can cause glitches and other anomalies. It may be safest to just make sure the fog fix is checked in the Bashed Patch.
