Detailed WalkthroughEdit

To start this quest, look for a grave near Brindle Home. If you can't find it, just follow Melus - he goes to visit it every morning. There's a claymore there, stuck upright in the ground. If you try to pull it out, you'll receive a message that it can't be drawn by a paladin. Since Melus refuses to speak on the matter, you'll have to break into his house (specifically, his basement) to snoop around. On a table, you'll find his journal, which details the events that led to his giving up his path, and where he left all the armor pieces. Now, your goal is to find all the pieces, which are in the following places:

Once you've found all six pieces, return to the grave and you'll be able to take the claymore. Melus, freed of his burden will die a happy man.

NotesEdit

  • You cannot start this quest if you have completed Molag Bal's Daedric shrine quest.
  • Completing either this quest or Molag Bal's Daedric quest while both are active will fail the other.
    • If Molag Bal's quest is completed successfully or failed in the normal ways (i.e. Melus dying some other way or him killing you with anything other than the Cursed Mace), all the pieces of the Heaven's Fury armor are removed from your inventory, Molag Bal's quest will update indicating you have displeased the Divines, and interacting with the claymore will display the message "Upon touching the sword I hear a storm of angry voices in my mind." Interacting with it again will yield the message "Nothing happens when I try again to lift the sword. It seems that the forces guarding the it [sic] will never again consider me worthy of wielding their weapon. My previous alliance with Molag Bal prevents this." (this last line displays even if you didn't do what Molag Bal asked).
    • If the sword is picked up, Melus will die a scripted death and both quests will be marked as completed. Molag Bal's quest is updated with a new entry "Melus Petilius died when I released the Path of Iron, so I cannot complete the task given to me by Molag Bal. The Daedra Lord will not favor me, but I have already gained the trust of the Nine."
    • All of the outcomes still count as completing Molag Bal's quest, therefore still allowing access to Hermaeus Mora's.

Journal EntriesEdit

A Path of Iron (OOOHeavenFuryClaymoreQuest)
Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
1 After finding a blessed claymore, a voice spoke within my own mind. It asked me to what end I would use their weapon but I could not find the right answer. What is the secret behind this mysterious and powerful sword?
10 I have discovered Melus Petilius' claymore. A weapon wielded during his Paladin years, it surges with blessings of the Holy. Its power calls to me, yet I cannot lift it from the ground it pierces. An arcane enchantment, or some form of supernatural chains, binds the sword to its resting place. Perhaps I will find the way to retrieve it from Vena's grave, should Melus agree, one way or another, to my will. Even if he remains silent about this, I may find more about this mystery by inspecting his home.
20 I have read Melus Petilius' book. In it, he confesses the deep wounds the death of his wife, Vena, caused in his spirit. With a solemn oath, he swore before the Nine to never again raise his arm in anger and violence. As a sign of their acknowledgement, they bound by holy power Melus' weapon, Path of Iron, to Vena's Grave. Melus only hints at the possibility that, were he to prove his dedication by once more defating hordes of evil and regain his Heaven's Fury armor, the gods may lift their seals upon the sword.
30 I have been given the chance to prove my worth. The Nine agreed to my answer, and I am now entitled to claim Melus Petilius' armor wherever I may find it. I think it will not be easy. I have a feeling that the Nine will test more than my strength. They will ascertain the purity of my soul before I can become their Paladin.
31 I have recovered one piece of Melus Petilius' Heaven's Fury armor. There should be five more to go.
32 I have recovered one more piece of Melus Petilius' Heaven's Fury armor. There should be four more to go.
33 I have recovered one more piece of Melus Petilius' Heaven's Fury armor. There should be three more to go.
34 I have recovered one more piece of Melus Petilius' Heaven's Fury armor. There should be two more to go.
35 I have recovered one more piece of Melus Petilius' Heaven's Fury armor. There should be one more to go.
40 I have recovered the last piece of Melus Petilius' Heaven's Fury armor. It is time to return before Vena's grave to claim my hard-earned prize. I only hope that these feats have proven my worth before the Nine to act as their Paladin Champion.
100 Finishes quest  I have finally earned my right to wield Path of Iron. The Nine smile upon me. I shall, as their Paladin Champion, prove that their gift could not have found a more worthy vanquisher of evil. As I lifted the sword from Vena's grave, I felt a shiver through my spine. The Nine have released their previous Champion. Both Vena and Melus' spirit are now free to journey together in the afterlife.
Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  •   It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage OOOHeavenFuryClaymoreQuest stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
