Morrowind talk:Telekinesis

Paper Items and LightsEdit

It seems this spell can't be used to steal books from afar. Presumably because before you can 'take' the book you first must read it, and telekinesis simply wouldn't help you with reading from so far away. I would put this in the article but I'm not entirely sure. I tried everything, even getting up much closer but maybe I'm just doing something wrong (I don't use telekinesis all that much) I'm still able to reach other objects from far away, just not books. Maybe it's only on the xbox version or something... Jihiro 02:11, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Confirmed for PC version. This happens not just with Books, but paper (generic) and paper (stuff written down) and magic Scrolls. Eidolon 08:19, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
It also is not possible to activate Shrines with Telekenisis Eidolon 08:25, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
And again: Light sources (candles, torches, bug lamps, etc.) cant be picked up with Telekinesis. I dont quite get this one. Eidolon 08:35, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
It's also not possible to activate a corpse using telekinesis. Also, should we be mentioning these various limitations of telekinesis on the page? Halfstache 05:42, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
Yes, this should be in the article, so I'm adding it. I just wasted a Telekinesis potion trying to pick up a scroll that apparently fell behind a stone table in the Ashalmimilkala shrine. — Unsigned comment by Downstrike (talkcontribs) at 10:01 on 25 March 2013

() I would like to add that Eidolon's third statement is only partially true. It IS possible to pick up light sources with telekinesis. But you must have your inventory open to do so. Then you can drag the light source into your inventory. Since i'm the only one having reported this, I would like it if someone else were to confirm my discovery, before I add it to the page. Can't grab books; can sometimes grab lights; OpenMW changes thisEdit

I agree with the old discussion here. In my Steam installation of the vanilla game (latest version, 1.6.1820; only have the two expansions installed, no mods or third party utilities or patches), I can not pick up books from a distance with telekinesis. This includes closed books, open books, paper, notes, and scrolls. Can't even read them. Can't grab them in or out of menu mode. As mentioned by someone above, I can pick up lights, but only in menu mode. Meaning, I cast telekinesis, open my inventory menu, and use my cursor to click on the light. Then I can place it somewhere else or add it to my inventory. But while the game isn't paused and my inventory menu isn't open, I can't touch lights from a distance.

I see in the article's history that this was mentioned at one point, but was removed, and the user said otherwise that you can do these things. That particular person seemed to prefer OpenMW over the vanilla engine though. I tested in OpenMW 0.45.0 (latest official release of OpenMW at the time of writing this), and sure enough, I was able to pick up lights and books from a distance like any other item. If not in menu mode, picking up a book from a distance opens it so you can read it, and then you can take it. If your inventory menu is open, then you just pick it up and place it somewhere or into your inventory.

I'm going to add a note about these restrictions because they are present in the original game. I'll also mention that this is "fixed" in OpenMW, as many people are using that now. I say "fixed" because it's probably not intended behavior but I'm not sure. --Croup shrunk (talk) 01:45, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Return to "Telekinesis" page.
