Morrowind talk:Hints/Archive 1

< Morrowind talk:Hints
This is an archive of past Morrowind talk:Hints discussions. Do not edit the contents of this page, except for maintenance such as updating links.

Okay, excuse my not doing all this myself, but I'm just kind of bringing this page into existence before work since I found out I don't have to be in for another hour or so because of the snow. ^_^ Things that need to be done for this page:

  • Rework the links in the main area... Separate Document links should link to a seperate article (item table should probably go to Morrowind:Item_Table or Morrowind:Items, for example. Same Page links need to link to the appropriate section down on the page.
  • Reformat the headings... Right now, the Wiki is interpreting the old titles as quotes or code and placing them in boxes. This is okay, but now how it's supposed to be. I recommend replacing them all with level 2 (==) or level 3 (===) headings.

Finished reformatting the headings. And now I have to go to work. I keep telling myself I wouldn't still be going if they didn't give me money for this sh*t ;-) --dUc0N 01:53, 22 Feb 2005 (EST)

Unreadable

This page is quickly becoming unreadable. Especially the alchemy section is expanding rapidly the last couple of days. I've already started some minor pruning by removing wiki contributors, but some serious work is to be done here imo.

Complete agreement here

You're right -- the wiki (in particular, this section) is getting really cluttered. I'm not so sure that pages need contributor notes, since almost all content originated from the main UESP site. Regardless, if someone has a different perspective on this subject, I'd be open to hearing it.

As a sort of side-note, I plan to start a style sheet entry on the wiki so that anyone who wants to edit pages for grammar/spelling/formatting can have a guide to go by. Anyone who has any writing or technical writing experience is more than welcome to bother me about it, or edit it once it goes up.

Edit: if anyone thinks this is too pretentious or overly unnecessary, message me and let me know. I don't want to come across as a know-it-all; I just want to make the wiki as easy to read and follow as possible.

Expansion of Alchemy section

Apologies for rapid expansion. I felt that I should provide an accurate submission, with a general idea of what users could expect. I deplore following someones advice on any topic, only to find they are some form of degenerate waterhead and completely full of it.

Thanks to whoever fixed that link to Shakti.

Contributor notes for completely new content would be nice, imo.

I just noticed some credit was left for some hints, yet mine was removed. I do not get credit, but others do? Perhaps there was a misunderstanding. I did not copy that hint, I made it.

No need for apologies. Just glad that people are devoting their time to expand these pages. But in all our enthousiasm, we should not overlook the fact that text is being written for the purpose of informing others, who could easily be scared off by large chunks of text.

On the credit note: Some people contributed before these pages were converted into Wiki format. I feel that these credits should remain, because there is no way in the history of these pages that can show they contributed. On the other hand, if you check the history tab of the pages you check, you'll find your own name mentioned, including a method to see exactly what you contributed (the diff link before each version in the recent changes list, and the version comparison in the history tab). So there's really no need for contributor notes for completely new content, it's something Wiki already does for you (granted, a somewhat more industrious way of obtaining the info). However, contributor notes take up a lot of space if everyone that ever changed something in a paragraph adds a contributor note. You don't really wish to see something like: Contributed by A; additions by B, C, D; major rewrite by E?

BTW, you're welcome for fixing that link (check the history page, and it'll show you I fixed it).

I see both your points about new content, and about old content. Perhaps contributor notes should be on its own page -- that way, everyone can get credit, and we don't have the text within the entries as well. Granted, this is a rather dubious task.

Also, although it's sometimes useful to note when an article was written, I think the last date updated at the beginning of some articles could be left out as well. I realize that we might be able to use the dates as a means to judge whether or not information is out of date, but we can accomplish the same thing via these discussion pages.

Anyway, I'm interested to hear what everyone thinks about these ideas.

I do see your point Siward, in addition to the fact of specific credit pages being superfluous as well as disefficacious.

I feel most people would not look in the history to determine contributions, however I'm beginning to wonder if anyone would really care who contributed besides those who did so. I doubt very highly any substantial Morrowind Research Grants being generated by our efforts here. ;-P

Side note- The stylesheet idea is a good one; maintaining extensibility, usability and homogenous format will surely produce a more professional appearance of the UESP.

I will format any new and all previous additions of mine following this guidline. -gdSentropy

Maybe splitting the seperate sections on this page into several other pages might do the trick. I think the Alchemy guides, Item lists, etc. deserve a more prominent place, now these topics are somewhat hidden and hard to find, even with the search function. Mensch 07:28, 5 December 2005 (EST)

End of principles, beginning of practice?

Heya, wonderful work done here, but I noted one thing about the master trainer section: It implies that Cinia Urtius doesn't exist. This may be the case with the XBox version, but the PC version actually DOES have such a person in existence; she's swimming under the dock at Tel Fyr. What happens is the engine 'drops' all the NPCs - or 'actors' - into the cell when it's loaded, but sometimes clipping issues cause this actor to fall through the floor - in this case, Cinia passes through the narrow object of the dock, and lands in the water beneath, condenmed to tread water for the rest of her life (or until the player happens to use the console command 'ra' in the cell to reset all the actors). This issue has cropped up frequently with Sharn gra-Muzgob, and also happened once to one of the Guild Guides for me!

In this instance, technically you don't even need to reset her, you can just swim under and talk to Cinia there and she'll train you. Just a nit-pick, I know; but stating that someone doesn't exist when they do can be rather misleading... --Empath 23:15, 19 July 2006 (EDT)

Rewrote "Fighters Guild & Thieves Guild Conflict"

Being a member of the offical TES forums, I often come across many people who have a question, in one form or another, about this conflict. So needing a good reference link to send these ones to, I have rewritten, clarified, and added more links to this article. It now links together the Thieves Guild quest line from Gentleman Jim Stacey, showing exactly how to end the conflict peacefully. --Rayne 00:08, 31 July 2006 (EDT)

"Free clear your name" trick?

In the last section, it mentions a "free clear your name" trick. Problem is, I can't find it. Any thoughts? Alphax 21:27, 21 February 2007 (EST)

Easy free items

I think this whole section should be deleted. Parts of it belongs on quest pages and parts on the easter egg page. None of them belong here in my opinion.--Zoidberg 13:30, 22 February 2007 (EST)

I meant the Great Item Locations section....--Zoidberg 13:31, 22 February 2007 (EST)

I would say the Sword of White Woe does, as it is a non-unique item, and it isn't quest related.--Ratwar 15:12, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Ok, ok, so most of it should be deleted.....(insert smiley face of choice here!)--Zoidberg 15:19, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Clean Up

I've taken on the task of cleaning up this article. My current revision is located on my Sandbox. Please put any comments either here or on my talk page. Thanks!--Ratwar 15:12, 22 February 2007 (EST)

Alchemy again

Im sorry but someones written the same thing twice but in two locations someone edit them together please Making Money via Alchemy and Alchemy, Low level, 'honest' money

I was wondering weather i should add this hint.

Do the alchemy trick a couple of times untill you can access all four effects of a ingrediant and then produce a luck potion with a combination of Corkbulb Root and Corpurus Weepings or Guar Hide. These should produce some super luck fortify potions. Then you need to find a smugglers cave. Go in and check the random loot boxes you should find Grand Soul Gems in a lot of the boxes and also you will always hit your target with every swing of your weapon.
