Loss of StrengthEdit

While attacking Sorkvild the Raven with my Chameleon spell amulet for cover, I later lost all my Strength points that I had been building up. May just be a bug. --— Unsigned comment by 137.104.130.131 (talk) at 14:56 on 27 March 2007

I doubt it's related. Strength (and other attributes) can be permanently lowered in one of two ways. First, if you are hit with a Damage Strength spell, you will lose Strength points. Secondly, (and this is a bug) if you are wearing an item which provides constant effect Fortify Strength, and you are hit with a Drain Strength spell, your Strength will not fully regenerate after the Drain spell wears off as it should. The only way to regain your previous Strength is to fully remove all such items, then cast a Restore Strength spell on yourself repeatedly until you are at your natural value again, then put the items back on again. Anyhow, neither of these is in any way related to Chameleon. It's more likely that Sorkvild just hit you with a Damage or Drain Strength spell during the fight. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:26, 27 March 2007 (EDT)

Stacking?Edit

Do chameleon spells stack? For example, I have amulet of shadows (80%) and Ring of Surroundings (20-30%). Using these in combination, would I be 100-110%, or would I be 80%, with 20-30% of the 20% left over? (as I have seen described on other skills/effects)Justeazy 12:23, 1 June 2009 (EDT)

Verification of exact Sneak mechanics neededEdit

I've been messing around with the ToggleCombatStats console code to try to figure out how exactly Sneak effects work. Unfortunately, Chameleon checks aren't logged unless you are also Sneaking, making it difficult (if not impossible) to obtain hard data on how Chameleon effects work unless you are also Sneaking.

That being said, it certainly seems like Chameleon is essentially just constant Sneaking, as you can tell by trying to talk to NPCs with different Spot values while having varying levels of Chameleon. If anyone can figure out the exact mechanics used, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to work on reverse engineering true Sneak effects using the Console, and I'll update the Sneak page with any findings I make. Sneaking in Morrowind is very interesting, by the way.Spweasel (talk) 18:05, 15 January 2013 (GMT)

I did some more testing, and there are some strange things going on. Chameleon seems to have a tiered effect, but exactly how it works is a mystery to me. I admit that the % chance of the "Who's there" mentioned in the article is an educated guess based on testing I performed. The bonus to Sneak is pretty much certain, though.Spweasel (talk) 22:48, 15 January 2013 (GMT)
Isn't there a way to simply exclude the subterfuge effects of sneaking so that you could tell it apart from Chameleon? I mean, just record it prior casting the spell and after, see the difference, do it several times and see if it's consistent. I wish I could help you, but my access to Morrowind is currently limited, so there's not much I can do. -- Kertaw48 (talk) 11:48, 16 January 2013 (GMT)
The problem isn't seeing the effect of Chameleon when Sneaking, it's figuring out the exact effect of Chameleon when not Sneaking. While you are Sneaking, the effect is fairly obvious, since you can see the increase on the Console via the TCS command. The problem is that if you have a strong enough Chameleon effect and are consistently failing your Sneak Check (or aren't Sneaking at all), enemies will still ignore you (or in some cases constantly engage and then disengage the player, which is a little obnoxious).
While it is certainly possible to just test different values of Chameleon effects randomly to see what happens, it feels like there should be some simple explanation waiting just under the game's hood. While the developers might have implemented Chameleon as a tiered effect, it would be an inelegant way of doing things (then again, "inelegant" is pretty much Bethesda's middle name). Undetectable with only 30% chameleon ?Edit

I noticed that wearing the ring of surroundings (30% chameleon) is enough for my character to constantly backstab opponents (with sneak/agility/luck maxed out), if I crouch during combat just in front of enemies they stop fighting immediately and worse they flee when I approach them, my character don't need to fight anymore, I can repeatedly inflict critical hits to fleeing enemies... Chameleon effect is clearly responsible of this, without this effect activated my character can be spotted. I can imagine being totally undetectable with a 100% chameleon but 30% seems a little bit low for the same result. — Unsigned comment by Plectrius (talkcontribs) at 19:51 on 20 February 2013‎
