Gold, also known as drakes or septims, is the currency used throughout Tamriel. Very little of the gold in Morrowind is actually "owned", which means picking them up does not count as theft. They will also not be confiscated when you go to jail or pay off your bounty to a guard. For unknown reasons, most of the owned gold is at the Dren Plantation.
As far as item IDs go, the IDs with values greater than 1 are used for stacks of gold found on top of crates, desks or tables.

Cursed Gold looks identical to normal gold but will summon a Dremora Lord behind you if you pick them up. However, these are not found in the game, possibly because they do not stack with normal gold and cannot be used as currency.
