Varondo is an Ayleid ruin located north of Kvatch, near the Brena River in the Colovian Highlands.[1] There are two large maze-like subsections within the ruins, Varondo Beldastare and Varondo Varlasel. Although the meaning of Beldastare is unknown, Varlasel translates to "Hall of Stars" in Ayleidoon.[2][3]
HistoryEdit
During the time of the Ayleids, an event known as the "Harrowing of Varondo" took place. Arox the Mutilator was present at the city the day it occurred, and burned down an army of Ayleids was "like dry grass in a wildfire" using his fiery breath, garnering him the title the "Ruin of Varondo".[4]
Following the fall of the White-Gold Tower in 1E 243 at the end of the Alessian Slave Rebellion, the clan of Varondo escaped largely intact as they fled south beneath the canopy of Valenwood. They are presumed to have settled there and adopted the Green Pact under the terms of the native Bosmer, eventually being absorbed into their local population.[5] The burgeoning Alessian Empire toppled the remaining Ayleid cities of Cyrodiil one by one, and Varondo subsequently fell into ruin.
Around 2E 582, the ruin was occupied by the Recollection, who were working to restore Daedric Prince Ithelia to power.[6]
By the time of the Oblivion Crisis in 3E 433, the outer part of the ruins had worn to a shadow of their former state, but the massive, convoluted, multi-level interior still remained intact. At the time, the ruins contained a coven of conjurers and Daedra.[7]
