Captain Veleth

Captain Modyn Veleth is a Dark Elf warrior living in Raven Rock. He is Captain of the Redoran Guard in Raven Rock. Initially, he can be found outside of Old Attius Farm fighting ash spawn.

He wears bonemold guard armor with matching boots and gauntlets. He carries an elven battleaxe and a selection of common items and gold.

On a normal day, he gets up at 6am, and patrols around Raven Rock for two hours. Then, at 8am, he'll head to The Retching Netch to meet with his secret lover, Dreyla Alor, for two hours. Then, at 10am, he'll head outside and browse the market for four hours. After that, at 2pm, he'll do some more rounds around town for four hours. Then, at 6pm, he'll head back to the Retching Netch and stay there for two hours. At 8pm, he'll patrol the town once again for four hours. Finally, at midnight, he'll head back to the Bulwark and get some sleep.

DialogueEdit

His greetings:

"Modyn Veleth, Captain of the Redoran Guard at your service."
"The security of both Raven Rock and Councilor Morvayn is my primary concern."
"Some consider my methods harsh, but playing the coddling nursemaid has never won a battle."
"Looking for something to lend a hand with? We have problems aplenty in Raven Rock."
"Don't let my posting here fool you. I was once in command of over a hundred troops... my luck simply changed when our homeland was destroyed."
"With the ash spawn threat taken care of, I can give my men the rest they deserve. Well done, friend."

Speaking to him:

What's the unusual armor you're wearing?
"Ah, this is bonemold armor... quite impressive, wouldn't you say? It's fashioned from actual bone that's been reinforced with a resin-like material and then shaped to form the armored plating. It might appear brittle, but I'd wager it could stop the blow of a weapon better than iron or steel."
Who are the Redoran Guard?
"All of the soldiers in this town are Redoran Guard... some of the best warriors that House Redoran has to offer. I've spent quite a few years honing their skills and I can assure you they're not just your average city guard."
Why have such elite soldiers on this island?
"To protect Councilor Morvayn, of course. He has quite a few friends on the Council back in Morrowind and they wanted to ensure his safety while he was here. Other than that, I'm not at liberty to discuss it."
What's being built outside of town?
"The Earth Stone, and... It's a shrine that... Hmm. I can't recall."
Why build a shrine outside of town?
"I don't know, it's hard to remember..."

After The Final Descent is completed:

How are things now that the mines are open again?
"I've had to muster some more men to protect the mine, but I don't really have a problem with that. Second Councilor Arano is concerned that once word reaches the reavers that the mine has reopened, they might think about paying us a visit. I say let them try. My men are ready for them."

When exiting conversation:

"Abide by our laws, and we'll get along well."
"Thank you for your assistance, it's raised my men's spirits quite a bit."

Quest-Related EventsEdit

March of the DeadEdit

"I wasn't sure I'd make it off this farm alive."

Initially, he can be found outside of Old Attius Farm fighting ash spawn. The guard accompanying him is dead and he's now struggling to survive. After you help him defeat the attacking ash spawn, he'll approach you and say:

"Thanks... I wasn't sure I'd make it off this farm alive. I wish I could have said the same for my man here."
What were those things?
"Some of the Redoran Guard have taken to calling them 'ash spawn.' Me? I don't care what they're called... all I know is they're a danger to Raven Rock and they need to be stopped."
How did that bring you to this old farm?
"I was going to search for clues that might lead me to wherever they're coming from. I know it isn't the best place to start, but we know they've been coming from this direction."

You now have three options:

I'd be glad to lend you a hand.
"Good, I can use all the help I can get. Besides, I don't feel comfortable leaving Raven Rock behind, and I'd hate to lose any more Redoran Guard."
I could lend you a hand... for a price.
"Hmm. I think I could talk the councilor into paying you, and I could use an extra pair of hands."
Seems like a waste of time to me.
"It's easy to criticize when you're just a visitor here. Since you're brimming with self-confidence, maybe you'd care to take over for me?"

If you picked the last option, you'll have two more options:

I suppose I could lend a hand.
"Good, I could use a pair of extra hands."
I'm not interested.
"Suit yourself."

If you picked the last option once again, when exiting conversation, he'll say:

"I could use your help."
"Come find me if you decide to reconsider my request."

When you approach him again, he'll say

"I hope you've reconsidered lending me a hand. Could really use it right now."

You can now ask him if he's still having trouble with ash spawn, to which he'll say:

"I am. Have you reconsidered?"
Yes, I'll lend a hand.
"Finally."
I think I'll pass for now.
"Very well."

Whenever you decide to accept his request, he'll then say:

"We were searching the farm when the ash spawn ambushed us. Have a look around and see if you can turn up anything useful."
What are these "ash spawn?"
"No one knows really. Superstitious folk say they're the risen forms of those that died long ago, but I'm not so certain. They started attacking the Bulwark a few weeks ago. My men were able to kill them, but they keep coming back."
How often do they attack?
"We've had two other assaults on the Bulwark at different spots on the wall. I know it sounds crazy, but it's almost like they're becoming more organized and probing it for weaknesses."
You suspect there's a motivation to their attacks?
"Exactly. Something has to be directing them against us and we need to find out who, or what it is."
Why do you think the attacks are from the Attius Farm?
"I don't. All I know is that the ash spawn are coming from this direction, so this is as good a place to start as anywhere else. Good thing the farm's been abandoned for a long time. I'd hate to see what they would do to an unarmed farmer and his family."
How long has this farm been abandoned?
"Not sure. I was told it's an old Imperial farm that was wiped out by the eruption of the Red Mountain. Not certain who lived there... it was already a pile of rubble when I arrived in Raven Rock."

As you exit conversation, he'll say:

"Report back to me if you discover anything unusual."

If you approach him while you're searching, he'll say:

"There has to be a clue around here somewhere."
"Have you found something?"

When you find a note on one of the ash spawn and show it to him:

I discovered this note on one of the ash spawn.
"This is strange. The note says it's from General Falx Carius, but that's impossible."
Impossible? Why?
"Well, Carius was the Imperial garrison commander at Fort Frostmoth, but he died over 200 years ago when the Red Mountain leveled the place. There's no way he could still be alive."
What do you want me to do?
"If General Carius is still alive, there must be something keeping him that way. I need you to head out to Fort Frostmoth and check it out. I'm going to head back to Raven Rock and prepare the men for further assaults."

When exiting the conversation, he'll now say:

"Be careful, this General Carius sounds out of his mind."

When you come back from Fort Frostmoth and approach him, he'll say:

"What news do you bring from Fort Frostmoth?"
I killed General Carius.
"I had my suspicions that he was undead. How else could he have survived for over 200 years? It's a shame. There are quite a few tales of General Carius's exploits, including the founding of Raven Rock."
He'll no longer send ash spawn to Raven Rock.
"Councilor Morvayn told me to give this to you if you made it back in one piece... and you got rid of General Carius. Better than a soldier's pay, so you should be thankful."

Alternatively, if you kill Carius before starting the quest, and you tell him you solved his ash spawn problem, he'll say:

"Excuse me? How can you be so certain?"
I found this letter.
"Let me see that. Judging from these writings, General Carius was under the impression that the fort was still active as it was 200 years ago. What turned him into one of the undead appears to remain a mystery for now."
He's no longer commanding the ash spawn.
"Then Raven Rock will no longer be attacked by those creatures. Councilor Morvayn was offering quite a bounty for assistance with this matter. I'd say you've more than earned it."

DragonbornEdit

During Dragonborn, you can ask if he knows who Miraak is:

Do you know someone called Miraak?
"I might know someone. Or maybe not. I can't remember..."
Just tell me if you know him.
"I... I can't. I just can't be sure. I think maybe he had something to do with a temple. A temple here on the island. Does that help?"

Served ColdEdit

After March of the Dead and The Final Descent are complete, he'll approach you and say:

"I'm sorry to bother you, but Second Councilor Arano asked me to come find you. He said it's quite urgent."
Did he say what it was about?
"All he wanted me to do is track you down and send you to him. Look, this is important... even more important than wiping out the ash spawn. Please, go speak to the second councilor as soon as possible."

If you approach him again he'll say:

"I'm sorry, I've already said too much. Talk to Second Councilor Arano if you're willing to help us."

He has no more involvement with the quest.

Recipe for DistractionEdit

After March of the Dead you can ask:

Is it difficult commanding the Redoran Guard?
"It can be. Even the most experienced warriors can fall prey to petty distractions. They usually didn't amount to much, but they make my job that much harder."
Petty distractions?
"Some of my own men have become quite accustomed to a spirit they called 'Emberbrand Wine.' Despise the stuff myself. It's powerful and tremendously addicting... I've seen men fail to finish even a single flask. If I knew where they were stashing the bottles, I'd put an end to it myself."
It'll turn up sooner or later.
"I certainly hope so."
I could track the stash down for you.
"You would? That would be helpful. I just don't have time to do it myself right now."
Any idea where I can begin?
"They're too smart to have left it in the Bulwark. I'd search one of the abandoned houses on the outskirts of town."

When you leave to find the stash, he'll say:

"Find me that stash of wine... I'm itching to be rid of it."

When you return with the stash:

I found the Emberbrand Wine stash.
"Good, this will help me keep things running without having to worry about a bunch of soldiers falling asleep on duty. Here, take this for your trouble."

ConversationsEdit

Veleth: "It's not looking good, is it?"
Adril: "I'm afraid not. If we don't do something soon, we may have to think about moving on."
Veleth: "My men have laid down their lives to keep Raven Rock safe. We've fought too hard to leave. We can't just let it all go."
Adril: "You're right, my friend. I just grow weary of the struggle."

Adril: "Anything to report, Captain Veleth?"
Veleth: "It's quiet for the moment."
Adril: "Something troubling you? I'd think you'd welcome a little peace and quiet."
Veleth: "Apologies, Adril. In my experience it's usually the quietest before the storm."

Geldis: "Captain Veleth! Good to see you again. What can I get you?"
Veleth: "How about a hundred Dunmer armed to the teeth?"
Geldis: "I'm afraid we're completely out of them at the moment. Sounds like you've had a rough day."
Veleth: "There's no reason to bourdon [sic] you with my troubles. How about I just settle for some mazte and we'll forget I mentioned it."

Fethis: "I want you to stay away from my daughter!"
Veleth: "What Dreyla chooses to do is her concern, not yours."
Fethis: "She has no idea what she's getting herself into. You may not always be there to take care of her."
Veleth: "Fethis, all of us mourn your wife's passing. Just don't let it affect how you treat your daughter."

Dreyla: "I don't know if I can do this anymore, Modyn."
Veleth: "Is it because of your father? Or is it me?"
Dreyla: "He's never been the same since my mother died. I don't think he ever wants me to feel the pain he suffers."
Veleth: "At some point, you're going to have to choose. No matter the outcome, I'll always respect your decision."

Veleth: "I don't know what your [sic] playing at, Glover... but something about you just doesn't add up."
Glover: "Understandable considering the differences between us."
Veleth: "I'm not talking about that. I have a knack for smelling trouble, and for some reason you reek of it."
Glover: "I promise you, I have nothing but good intentions towards everyone in this town."

Garyn: "Excuse me, captain. Do you have any plans for the west end of town? We feel awfully exposed over there."
Veleth: "If I had the resources at my disposal, I'd build you a wall myself."
Garyn: "I understand. I know you're doing everything you can."
Veleth: "Tell you what. I'll make sure we have a permanent foot patrol over there. It's the least I can do for you."

Veleth: "Hold a moment, Mogrul. I've gotten a report that you've been harassing some of the townsfolk. Is this true?"
Mogrul: "Oh, come on. You know me, Captain Veleth. My hands are clean."
Veleth: "See that they stay that way, or else I'll send you back to Skyrim in a crate. You understand me?"
Mogrul: "Yes, sir, Captain Veleth, sir."

NotesEdit

  • He was supposed to have a conversation with Elder Othreloth, but since he never enters the temple, the two can never meet and the following conversation cannot be heard.
Othreloth: "Captain Veleth, I haven't seen you or your men visiting the Temple."
Veleth: "Elder, we barely have enough men to keep the town safe as it is. I can't pull them off watch."
Othreloth: "Our faith is being judged every day, captain. We can't ignore it."
Veleth: "Faith's just going to have to wait, Elder. I'm sorry."
  • When he died, he was supposed to say, "I die, serving my homeland..." but since he's always essential, this line can never be heard.
  • He's the author of the note Dearest Dinya.
  • Unlike the Redoran Guard he commands, Veleth has no bow or arrows in his inventory, so in the event of a Dragon attack, he will pull his battleaxe and stand in place until the Dragon lands.

BugsEdit

  • Despite being captain of the Redoran Guard, Veleth does not have the correct faction for recognizing bounties (GuardFaction (makes an actor a guard)).
