Detailed WalkthroughEdit

The Royal ContractEdit

Speak to the Dark Slayer, who says:

"This little excursion is not for just anyone, but I feel you'd enjoy the challenge of the experience. We have a client who wants to call accounts on a member of the royal family of (town). When I heard that, I thought of you. Interested?"

AcceptEdit

The Dark Slayer goes on:

"I just knew you could not resist this one. Fair warning, your target, (noble's name) is no pampered princeling. The client is also one of the royal family, worried that (noble's name) is going to worm a way to the throne. And from what I've heard, (he/she) has the power to do just that. Our client wants (him/her) extinct in (time limit) days. We will give you that time to account and return to make your report. May Mephala walk with you, (player's first name)."

DeclineEdit

The Dark Slayer answers:

"Oh, well. Probably wise, but it does smack a little of ... dare I say, cowardice?"

Assassinating the AristocratEdit

Travel to the city named by the Dark Slayer and enter the palace. You can enter freely between 10:00 and 18:00, but will have to pick the lock after hours. Once inside, find and kill the target, who will appear as a knight, nightblade, spellsword, or warrior. There will be no other enemies in the building, but you should still be cautious, especially if the target is a spellcaster. When the noble dies, you will hear:

"I could...have been your... next...ruler," moans (noble's name). The contract has been fulfilled.

Return to the guildhall to complete the quest and receive your reward.

RewardEdit

Return to the Dark Slayer after killing the noble, and he will say:

"Beautiful, (player's first name), truly. Brings tears to these weary eyes. As lovely an accounting as I've ever seen. I feel like writing a poem. Why don't you take your (random gold) gold pieces and get the hell out of here so I can write a ballad about it? Seriously, I'm very proud, (player's first name).

BugsEdit

  • Due to an oversight, the town where you accept the quest is not named in your journal. If you aren't keeping track of this information, you can potentially fail the quest simply by not being able to return for your reward.
    • DFQFIX adds a line to your quest log which keeps track of your town of origin.
  • The target is supposed to have a randomized name, like most other quest NPCs. However, it may simply display as "guard".

Additional DialogueEdit

After you have accepted this quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "I know what I'm talking about. (Noble's name) is going to be our next ruler."
  • "Someday (noble's name) going [sic] to be our ruler. Then we'll know real tyranny"

If you fail the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "(Noble's name) left the court for a while, but (he/she)'ll be back. That's for certain."
  • "And the royal opera continues. I wonder what made (noble's name) leave court."

If you successfully complete the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "They ought to declare it a (region) holiday. (Noble's name) death day! Hooray!"
  • "I can't help but be suspicious about (noble's name)'s sudden death. Too convenient."

If you successfully complete the quest, the quest giver may later greet you with:

  • "I'm still thinking about that knight's accounting. It was truly sublime, (player's first name)."

If you failed the quest, the quest giver will greet you with:

  • "I know it was a difficult assignment. Nigh impossible. But still, you failed, and I have no tolerance for failure."
