“There are three grave sins that prevent us and our loved ones from living,” the Teacher once said.
The audience froze.
"The first sin is gloating. If a neighbour's cow dies, this is not a reason for fun. I am not saying that you are obligated to help your neighbour. But at least do not rejoice in someone else's grief. Neighbours are people too, you shouldn't wish them ill."
People were talking approvingly.
The wise teacher waited for the conversation to end and continued:
"The second sin is despondency. Even when you have only one cow, even when she is old and sick, even when she gives very little milk, there is no need to despair. Enjoy life. Yes, she's old, yes, she's sick, but it's still a cow. You can expect a calf from her. Many, for example, do not have a single cow at all and have nothing to wait for."
The crowd roared with approval.
The teacher waited for the hum to stop. But then a voice sounded from the crowd:
"If I do not lose heart and rejoice that I have a cow, but my neighbour does not, it turns out that I am glad that my neighbour lives worse than me, and so I am gloating."
The crowd fell silent, pondering what was said, and the Master finished his speech:
"The third, most serious sin that prevents you from receiving joy from life is tediousness."
