FanfictionEdit

I've written some fanfiction for Morrowind which I'm trying to get onto the site, but due to my Wiki illiteracy (I only just managed to post this message) I can't work out how to post it. Is there any chance I could e-mail it to you (in .doc format) and you post it on the site? It's in 11 chapters, maybe there could be a different page for each chapter, I'll let you decide. I e-mailed it to daveh about a week ago but haven't heard a response yet. I posted some of it on the forum if you want to dig it up and have a preview. The best way to get hold of me is either PMing me on the forum or e-mailing me at jamesbandenburg at the usual Hotmail place. Thanks, --R

Daveh did mention receiving your email. However, there's been some discussion lately about what is most appropriate for fanfiction; you may be interested in reading the discussion at UESPWiki:Community_Portal#Fanfiction_and_Fanart. Your input to that discussion would be very welcome, in particular to help us know fanfiction authors' responses to one critical question that has come up:
  • Is a wiki-based web site the best place for fanfiction? Any content posted on a wiki can be freely edited by anybody on the internet; the wiki is primarily designed to facilitate collaborative writing projects, not individual writing projects. So posting your story here would imply that you want other editors to help you work on the story, at which point it would no longer be truly your story any more. Everyone who edits on an article is considered to be an author (see UESPWiki:Copyright and Ownership). Is that really what you are looking for?
If your primary objective is to just make your work available for anyone to read, I would guess that other websites would work better. Readers don't come to UESPWiki looking for fiction; they come looking for information about the games. It seems to me that readership of sites like fanfiction.net would be a better match, since they are already looking for fanfiction, are more likely to be knowledgeable about fiction, and are more likely to provide you with useful feedback.
This is, however, a discussion that is still currently active, and there hasn't been any decision made yet about fanfiction on UESPWiki. So any help you could provide us would be appreciated. --Nephele 17:32, 24 February 2007 (EST)

HowdyEdit

Ditto on the clean-up re: Dagon Shrine. I've since decided to make it official. --Rabbit 1230 cst 19 February 2007

Thanks from meEdit

Thanks for noticing my mistakes. I hope they're soon cleaned up, i'll be thinking more next time :) --Serio 19:35, 15 February 2007 (EST)

Don't worry about it... we've all made our share of mistakes along the way ;) And it's pretty easy to fix any mistakes that do happen on the wiki. We'd rather have editors who contribute lots of info and make a few mistakes than have editors who are too worried to ever contribute what they know. --Nephele 19:57, 15 February 2007 (EST)

An apologyEdit

I realized my mistake with Spiddal Sticks (just got the names confused in my head (Spiddal Sticks/Wisp Stalks) and was going to change it back when you already had done so. Preacher 16:43, 9 February 2007 (EST)

No problem... I just fixed it as part of my obsessive fact checking :) --Nephele 16:56, 9 February 2007 (EST)
Thanks :) Preacher 19:08, 9 February 2007 (EST)

A thanks and another questionEdit

Hi. You were kind enough to answer my problem with Mercantile on the main page. I tried to leave a thanks on that page, but was unsure how to do so. I tried the edit thing but when it posted it was one long line instead of being paragraphed along with the other entries. So I followed the links here to give my thanks and to ask another question. As to the Mercantile problem, for now I will just keep selling things for awhile to see if my Mercantile skill goes up, since I haven't clue how to install patches, which brings me to my other question....How do I install patches and plugins for other quests? I have xbox360 which is not connected to the internet. I have wireless DSL and a laptop which is what I am using to type this. Does the xbox have to be connected to internet in order to do patches and or plugins. Again thanks for the help, and my apologies if I am using this format here incorrectly. First time getting help here.— Unsigned comment by Whitefang1968 (talkcontribs)

I'm glad you found my tip helpful. Although I just realized I messed up on my calculation of how many transactions will be needed before your skill starts going up again (I gave you the experience points rather than the number of transactions). So you're actually looking at a total of 350 to 1000 transactions. Mercantile is a depressingly slow and difficult skill to train, even under normal circumstances :|
As for your edit at Reference Desk, the problem was that you started the line with a space. To do an indent, you should start the line with a colon (:), or multiple colons to get more indents.
To get patches and/or official plugins installed onto an Xbox 360 you need to connect it to the internet and use Xbox live (you can use the basic, no-cost Xbox live service). If you have wireless, your best bet is probably to get a wifi adapter for your Xbox; Microsoft sells one that just plugs into the back of your box. There's basically no way to use your laptop to access the internet and then transfer files from your laptop. You can copy game saves off of the Xbox 360 (if you're willing to buy even more addon gadgets), but to copy files onto the Xbox requires adding a couple layers of security encryption. --Nephele 16:15, 3 February 2007 (EST)
Thanks again for the help. Looks like I will need to sell my behind off in order to get up to Master Mercantile. I'll just hold onto all the treasure I come across that sells for more than 1700. I'm trying to decide if being 38 and being addicted to Obivion is a bad thing.— Unsigned comment by Whitefang1968 (talkcontribs)
Nah, I'd say (from personal experience) that being addicted to Oblivion at 38 is just fine :D Since your problem has come up a few times lately I've expanded the explanation on Oblivion:Free Skill Boosts#Bug and added a pointer to it at Oblivion:Glitches#Skill Level is Frozen. If you think anything needs to be added to either of those pages, feel free to edit them and/or let me know what needs to be done. --Nephele 18:17, 3 February 2007 (EST)

Deaf EditorEdit

I've got an editor that keeps adding information to a page which is redundant. I left a message on his talk page, and he has continued to do it. What should I do now? (The page is located at Morrowind:Glitches. --Ratwar 22:50, 3 February 2007 (EST)

Yep, I was just noticing that. I was about to leave another message on his talk page, revert the edit, and see if he stops and pays attention. If he tries yet again, I'll go ahead and put a semi-protection on the page so he can't edit it any more until he shows some evidence that he's reading the feedback. --Nephele 22:52, 3 February 2007 (EST)

Cleaning up Pages - Contact Admin?Edit

Hi Nephele, I've gotten through cleaning up and rewriting a few pages. Do I need to contact an admin before removing the 'cleanup' tag from an article - ie. for spot checks etc. --MacFodder 21:53, 6 February 2007 (EST)

Nope. Admins don't have any special powers to approve (or veto) edits to wiki pages; decisions about page content are basically made by the community as a whole. In general, if you think a change is appropriate, go ahead and make it; if someone else disagrees, then a discussion will be started. For more info, you can look at the Consensus page. But I have already taken the cleanup tag off of at least one page you cleaned up, because it looked pretty clean to me :) Thanks for all the work you've been doing, and welcome to the wiki! --Nephele 22:01, 6 February 2007 (EST)
thanks! glad to be of assistance to the community --MacFodder 00:01, 7 February 2007 (EST)

Thanks!Edit

Because there are so many, I was almost afraid that they were accepted here. I migrated from wikipedia, and am a grammar and spelling nazi at heart. So, count me in on that! Somercy 12:40, 7 February 2007 (EST)

We do tend to a have a different audience of contributors here than at wikipedia, as you can perhaps imagine ;) Which means it can be a bit harder to keep on top of the spelling, grammar, and general style guidelines. Any help getting them under control is always welcome! --Nephele 14:20, 7 February 2007 (EST)

A question concerning MercantileEdit

Hi again. You were a great help with my previous questions so here I am again. If I raise my Mercantile skill artificially to Master level (100), will I be able to sell items at face value or must I rise to Master by selling things before I can gain the Master benefits? Also, once I am able to sell at face value, am I still limited to the Merchants gold amount? For example, can I sell Goldbrand for the list price of 6615 or will I just get 1200 or whatever the Merchants limit is. I want to max what I can get for loot since in real life I only make 35,000. At least in Oblivion I can get rich.  :) For future questions should I start new topics like I did here or just keep adding to previous threads? I don't want to clog up your talk page if you would prefer I just use one continuous thread. Again, thanks for your time and answers. GREG

You have to raise your mercantile skill to 100 by selling things, reading Skill Books, and/or paying Trainers (i.e., increase the base value of the skill to 100) in order to be able to sell things at face value (... the only way I've ever done it is by paying for lots of training). Using Fortify Skill won't work. You will still be limited by the merchant's available gold, although you'll be able to increase the available gold by a total of 1000 as a master in mercantile (so you'll get 2200 from some of the better merchants).
If you have any new questions, feel free to start a new topic. Or you can also ask questions on any topic's talk page (i.e., Mercantile), which might get you a faster response, in particular if someone else notices the question before I do. --Nephele

Personal Game FavorEdit

Alright, this is gonna sound strange but stay with me. During the Dark Brotherhood line, one of the quests (assassinations) you had to do for Vicente was called The Assassinated Man. You had to help fake Francois Motierre's death because he was a scumbag and then an even filthier scumbag trading his mother for a chance to run away from his mistakes, anyways I'm sure you're familiar with it. Well, this was around the start of my game many, many, many hours ago and the whole thing never sat right with me, I mean the guy giving up his mother and what not, so I always felt it was my duty to track him down later and beat him to death literally. Yes, I suppose it is funny. However I soon got engrossed in the massive achievement that is the game and never spent the time to look but I always randomly would think about it. So, can you possibly do me a bizarre favor and check in the CS to see what happens to this guy, I mean is he scripted out of the game after that quest or does he go hide in Anvil somewhere or what. I'm hoping you can check without having to be at that quest point, but either way I appreciate it. --AlbinoMudcrab 02:40, 13 February 2007 (EST)

Long question :), but seems to have a short and easy answer: he disappears at the end of the quest. Whether you succeed or fail with the quest, when you talk to Valtieri, the CS executes the command "FrancoisMotierreFakedRef.Disable" which will vanish the reincarnated Motierre from the game. So no opportunity for vengeful retribution :(
Feel free to ask if you have any other random questions.... For whatever reason, I tend to enjoy looking up bizarre game factoids :) And welcome back from your wiki-hiatus, too. I've been enjoying reading your imaginative picture captions again! --Nephele 16:05, 13 February 2007 (EST)

No way, a disappointment and a half. Well, thanks for checking, I was gonna ask whether he could be killed right prior to speaking with Vicente to complete the quest but I remember I tried that at the time and it either failed or wouldn't give you the bonus. I do have a few more bizzarro things I've thought of that will take some "in-depth looking" here shortly, like the Goblin Tribes and their Staffs drama you helped with the other day, so as long as you don't mind, be prepared, be very prepared :O

On a side note, thank you for the returning welcome, I appreciate that a lot. Contributing to something like this you don't expect or intend for your work to be noticed, you just want to be a part of something larger and help others, but it always makes it feel that much more worth it when it is. I play on the PC and started suffering from this "high play time" stuttering glitch that is just astronomically awful. Where your game time is above a certain number and for some reason all animations (fire, doors opening, spells, insects, smoke, any particle effect) either stutters or is frozen. It got to where I was just disgusted (especially since Bethesda doesn't even seem to acknowledge its existence) and just figured a patch would come, which is looking like the Shivering Isles now, but none did. I couldn't take the wait so I started playing again trying my best to just ignore it and get through, however it's gradually gotten worse since so I don't know what's going on. It's widely known and has temp fixes but none seem to be permanent. Also, I wanted to ask you a few things about what's been going on around here, like what happened with Chris and what the deal is with apparently the site being down for a month because the server ran out of space? Are we good now for uploading pics and whatnot or should discretion be applied? However, I feel perhaps a Talk page isn't the place to do that, so maybe I can find you in the IRC room sometime here in the next few days and you can clarify/catch me up. Sorry about the super-post, thanks again Nephele. --AlbinoMudcrab 00:13, 14 February 2007 (EST)

To start with the easiest question (and the one that probably a few other people are wondering about): Daveh said to keep going wild with new images, that he doesn't have worries about too many images, and we don't need to start being selective with use of pictures. The main contributor to running out of space was out-of-control error logs (gigabytes of error logs); those are now being rotated and kept in check. And I noticed earlier tonight that Daveh added a new 80 GB hard drive and transferred the images over to it, so there's tons of space.
As for IRC, I'm not visiting the channel too often any more, but I'll always stop by if there's any reason to; just let me know when would be best. Or Ratwar is generally in IRC, and he's probably the best source anyway for an unbiased view of recent events. --Nephele 00:46, 14 February 2007 (EST)

Oops...Edit

Sorry about that, I didn't notice that page ([[Category talk:Message Boards]]) had already been prod'd by you. I was checking out the user's history because of some other odd edits. Might as well just delete it, though, since it's been answered and the page doesn't have any reason to exist any more. --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:35, 14 February 2007 (EST)

I realize it's a pretty routine deletion but speedy deletes should only be done on cases that are covered by the speedy deletion criteria, and I don't think this page qualifies. There's no harm in having a prod tag sit on a page for a week and then deleting at that point. The end result is the same and no rules are being broken/stretched to do it. --Nephele 17:21, 14 February 2007 (EST)

DescriptionEdit

It was on a half-formatted quest...sorry, the thing got messed up. Heck, I doubt it was a Morrowind quest, anyway. Shadowkey Rats Quest, perhaps? Lots of Shadowkey pages need major format work and such.

Glad to be appreciated. Wanna know something sorta pathetic? I've been here less than a month, but am on the top 50 Active Users. Sad. Somercy 17:06, 15 February 2007 (EST)

OK, I tracked down the template problem and fixed it. Now you should be able to work on the Shadowkey quests without them all sharing the same single description page.
Congrats on hitting the top 50! Yep, there are a lot of editors who do some tweaking for a few weeks and move on, so there's a very long tail of low-edit-count accounts. And then at the other extreme, there's the top ten ;) --Nephele 03:10, 16 February 2007 (EST)

QuestionsEdit

I don't want to sound like an newb but I was wondering, how do you change the name of an entire article? The reason why I ask this is because there has been some discussion about changing the Oblivion:Things to Do When You're Bored article's name to somthing else.

Also I was wondering if it would be ok if I change the name to Oblivion:Roleplaying? Or is that a decision more appropriate for an administrator to make?

Any editor (as long as they've had an account for more than three days) can rename a page. To do it, just click on the "move" button at the top of the page and type in the new name for the page (and the reason why you think it needs to be moved).
But I'm not sure that what you want to do is to move the entire Things to Do When You're Bored article to Roleplaying. It seems that what you want to do is just move the Roleplaying section of that page to a new page, and leave the rest of the contents still located at Things to Do When You're Bored. In which case, you want to cut and paste that whole section. Edit Things to Do When You're Bored, highlight the entire Roleplaying section and cut it; then edit Roleplaying (just click on that red link you created when asking your question, for example) and paste the whole chunk in. There's probably some cleanup that still needs to be done (adjusting the titles, creating links between the two pages, etc.) but that's the basics of how to do it.
Let me know if you have any other questions! --Nephele 18:49, 15 February 2007 (EST)
Alright I did it. :) Thanks for the help. Pappasmurf 19:12, 15 February 2007 (EST)

AmericaniZationEdit

hi nephele, I just had a quick question about the preferred mode of english this Wiki aspires to. I noted a change to something I wrote into the americaniZed form (it's always fun to be told I'm spelling something wrong in English :D ). Is there a consensus in amongst the Admins about this matter? I don't want to have to alter my mindset when writing content to always cater for the americaniZed versions of things unless there is a formal agreement within this community about the matter - it would be nice to get an idea about the matter. :) --MacFodder 18:52, 18 February 2007 (EST)

Yes, for the sake of consistency US spellings are preferred over UK spellings. UESPWiki:Style Guide#Language and UESPWiki:Spelling state that, and why. Although those are relatively new additions to the wiki, they're based upon previous discussions that had reached that conclusion; all that's really new is trying to make that information more easily available to anyone who is wondering. --Nephele 20:09, 18 February 2007 (EST)
sweet, thanks for this, it's as right as rain now in my head - i'll make sure i remember to standardize from now on - I should start utilizing an off-line editor more but running ye olde Word across some text will be as fast. i'll just go collect my armor, jewelry, contemporize my honor system, eat a donut and then color my hair :) --MacFodder 21:46, 18 February 2007 (EST)
Just don't forget to greet your neighbors on the way to the shopping center :) I'm glad the rationale makes sense to you, and I'm amazed how useful the new spelling page has already been. This wiki is actually the only place where I use US spellings; I was brought up with UK spellings and stubbornly insist on continuing to inflict them on everyone else in my life. But having spent half of my life in the US, at least I'm pretty familiar with the US versions. --Nephele 01:18, 19 February 2007 (EST)
Not that it really matters, but I don't think the "donut" spelling is really an Americanization so much as it is a copyrighted trademark of Dunkin Donuts, which has been adopted in common usage. No other American brand of doughnuts uses that spelling that I know of.
Anyhow, I think due deference given to the fact that the game was created in the US and released there first makes the most sense. Also, for what it's worth, the site itself is headquartered in Canada, which I'm pretty sure uses the US version of the game as well. At any rate, I don't think there's any need to go through the whole site and purge every instance of UK spelling we see. I only change them when they either affect a link (such as the Armor skills in the games) or when I'm making other more significant changes on the same page. --TheRealLurlock Talk 09:53, 19 February 2007 (EST)

Flirting?Edit

Darn, reading Rabbit's talk page has gotten interesting lately. You're married? Hm, then I may have to flirt with the bunny myself, see if I can get him to multiply like...well, the pun writes itself. Somercy 12:18, 21 February 2007 (EST)

Blame me? I'm not serious on any of it, though...hope they know that. I'm still in high school! Somercy 12:15, 23 February 2007 (EST)

ArbitrationEdit

If you will consent to it, I think you are one of the parties involved in the argument to change Aristeo's status from being an administration. I feel that we should solve this through an Arbitration outlined here. The goal of the arbitration will be to decide if Aristeo has overstepped his bounds as an administrator or acted in such a way that removing those responsibilities is justified. I have already said, I would be willing to act as the arbitrator.

Preliminary InjunctionsEdit

NepheleEdit

  • None

WryeEdit

  • Don't Respond to Aristeo's comments on any page

AristeoEdit

  • No editing Policy Pages
  • No blocking besides pure vandalism
  • No responding to Wrye's comments on any page

Yes, I agree to an arbitration process, including having Ratwar as the arbitrator and that his decision as arbitrator will be final. --Nephele 21:38, 25 February 2007 (EST)

I have declined. See User_talk:Ratwar/Arbitration. --Wrye 00:49, 26 February 2007 (EST)

thanks for the 'jemane typo' fixes. everytime i see their surname, the actual term germane was popping into my head - comes from doing edits at home whilst on sick leave, feverish and desiring naught but Cheezels... :) --MacFodder 04:18, 27 February 2007 (EST)

Permission to use your name?Edit

I've a character in creative writing, a weather-witch. Might I steal your name for her? I also might nab Wrye's name, but yours I wanted to ask for...Somercy 12:17, 28 February 2007 (EST)

Of course :) Especially since its not really my name, I just stole it from Aristophanes or greek culture or somewhere like that. --Nephele 13:28, 28 February 2007 (EST)

Standard LayoutsEdit

Hi, Nephele! Just dropping by to see if you could point me to the pages with the most complete standard layouts being used. I'm trying to address the Oblivion pages that need work. With the help of many other editors, every Oblivion quest page marked with a "cleanup" tag has been cleaned up!

Also, what pages do you think need the most attention?

Thanks in advance. --GuildKnight 17:34, 28 February 2007 (EST)

Great work on going through all those cleanup tags!
As for standard layouts, there is a style guide page UESPWiki:Style_Guide/Quest_Layout that should provide pretty complete info on what is expected for quest page layout. There's also some info on places (UESPWiki Talk:Style_Guide/Place_Layout), and NPCs (UESPWiki:Style_Guide/NPC_Layout) although we haven't really gone as far on standardization there; if you'd like to tackle standardization on those pages, we could probably come up with some ideas ;) With NPC pages in particular there have been a few ideas that have bounced around on creating a standard layout, but never really got past the idea stage. But before looking at NPC pages I should warn you: there are a lot of NPC pages, and working on them has worn down a few good editors.
I've been trying to start assembling ideas on specific things that need to be done at UESPWiki:Task List. I haven't really got around to finalizing and advertising it yet, but you could definitely look through what's there for some ideas.
Another thing that comes to mind is the city pages. Some like Oblivion:Bravil have a bit of descriptive info, but others, such as Oblivion:Cheydinhal are really nothing but lists. It was recently pointed out that the Oblivion city pages have a lot fewer details than Morrowind pages (e.g. Morrowind:Seyda Neen). Also, for most of the imperial city districts there are actually two somewhat redundant pages: Oblivion:Elven Gardens District and [[Oblivion:Elven Gardens District Map]]. If someone dedicated and motivated like yourself were to spend some time thinking about what info would be useful on those pages and how to lay it out, I think the city pages could probably be made much more useful.
Since you asked for ideas :) --Nephele 18:00, 28 February 2007 (EST)
Thanks. I think I'll start with the cities... I started looking at the NPCs, and I think I'll save that for later! :-) Or, maybe, I'll tackle the cities' NPCs as I work on the city pages. Glad to have something to occupy my time 'til Shivering Isles. See ya around! --GuildKnight 19:53, 28 February 2007 (EST)
