Quest won't start?Edit

Hey, I've got a problem. After I finish the quest Alduin's Wall, this quest won't start. I've tried using the console to "startquest mq204", I've tried using "setstage mq204 #", where # is any of the stages, and yet the quest won't start. Arngeir won't say anything to me about it. I first thought it was messed up due to me using "tmm 1", so I went to a save before I used that code, and it still won't work. Anyone have any idea why it doesn't work? Has this happened to anyone else?--Thomas Christian 18:59, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

to get this quest if you get the bug after alduins wall quest stand next to the talking greybeard and enter in the console setstage mq204 10 and the quest will start :) — Unsigned comment by 90.224.43.42 (talk) at 00:07 on 30 November 2011
I am having the same problem and the solution above did not fix it (but thank you for posting it). The only thing I can imagine might have caused this is that I added the Clear Skies shout early, just to see the night sky more often. I had no idea it was central to the story. Clear Skies seems to be the only shout I cannot unlearn. I have tried startquest and setstage. Getstage shows MQ203 (Alduin's Wall) at 300, but MQ204 (The Throat of the World) at 0. I have been to the top of the mountain but the dragon does not spawn. Any ideas that do not involve me having to start over would be appreciated. — Unsigned comment by 99.232.174.26 (talk) at 15:25 on 9 December 2011
I wish there was a way to fix this. I have tried using the console to start mq204 but no luck. Any fixes?? — Unsigned comment by 173.79.132.130 (talk) at 01:52 on 13 December 2011
Same problem here. I've tried to remove shouts from my "spellbook" then start quest, but no luck. It's seems that the only chance is to move forward to the next one or two quests by the console. — Unsigned comment by 78.80.67.217 (talk) at 11:04 on 15 December 2011
[edit]
Solved by skipping this quest to next by console command setstage mq205 10. Steel need to talk with Paarthurnax, find the elder scroll...
This problem with quest occurs when you used console command psb before or you have the two dragon shouts (clearsky and Dragonrend) learned by console before ending previous quest. — Unsigned comment by 78.80.67.217 (talk) at 06:49 on 16 December 2011
I have used psb on 3 other characters and this current one is the only one I am having trouble getting Arngeir to teach me Clear Skies. I will try the setstage MQ205 10 and see if that works for me, and I will update. Delphine and Esbern have also disappeared from Sky Haven Temple. Hopefully this will fix that, as well. — Unsigned comment by 69.108.239.209 (talk) at 22:11 on 8 February 2012
ok, so i have found a rather awkward solution. I ran into the same problem--learned clear sky/dragonrend early, got to the throat of the world for the view and all that--now i cant start this quest, so i used the Creation Kit, load the file, under Character-Quest-Main Quest-MQ204, open that, and I enabled [Start Game Enabled] and disabled [Run Once] options. then i loaded the game and used setstage mq204 10, the quest started with "Talk to Arngeir". so if you are doing this, just to fix the options after you finished the quest. — Unsigned comment by 24.22.233.139 (talk) at 05:45 on 15 May 2012

() psb has nothing to do with this bug I am not using this cheat on this character and I have the bug as well but I hadn't had this bug with my first character. — Unsigned comment by 91.176.148.100 (talk) at 16:56 on 25 August 2012

Can you explain how you did that with the Creation Kit step by step? I am having this problem and SetStage does not work at all. — Unsigned comment by 96.231.213.158 (talk) at 07:34 on 25 November 2012
I can confirm creating the above mentioned mod with the Creation kit, loading the mod, and then using the console command 'setstage mq204 10' allows the quest to be started. It took about 5 minutes to accomplish once I got the creation kit installed. Just check out a tutorial about how to get started with the creation kit and then follow the instructions above. Many thanks to the poster for that solution. — Unsigned comment by 216.60.70.165 (talk) at 10:45 on 21 November 2013

did you ever figure out how to read the words? (24.80.173.95 05:58, 20 June 2012 (UTC))

Don't need Clear Skies to get up thereEdit

I climbed up to The Throat of the World before I was given Clear Skies (avoided the mist completely - you can often slowly inch up steep slopes by continually running forward and strafing to the sides and pressing jump). Paatharnax didn't land so it was pointless, but it was a bit of a challenge. And then when the storyline actually required me to go up there, I could fast travel. Fire Breath word doesn't appear on wallEdit

After Paarthurnax breathes fire onto the word wall so that Shol can be learned, nothing happens. The words don't appear on the wall or anything, just an arrow pointing to the wall telling me I should learn the word of power which isn't there, which prevents me from completing the shout and progressing in the main quest. Has anyone else had this problem, or can tell me a way to fix/prevent this glitch? I am on Xbox, so I can't use console commands. — Unsigned comment by 69.244.23.111 (talk) at 01:21 on 23 December 2011

Same Problem... I only have two thirds of the shout, and it's really bothering me. You can use what you know of the shout and it'll still work. But it's really annoying to be missing that last part. — Unsigned comment by 174.116.106.2 (talk) at 19:48 on 7 May 2012
I faced the same issue, on PC. Shouldn't this be mentioned in the bugs section and verified by now? I've seen a number of posts complaining about it. Gotama (talk) 08:24, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
I experienced this as well, and I'm pretty sure it's not the first time I've run into it. I have a feeling this may happen if you get between Paarthurnax and the wall when he breathes the word onto it. With four reports over several years, this definitely should be noted in the bugs list. Clear Skies not workingEdit

(EDIT) I got the same problem. I couldn't walk thru the Blizzard, even after using the Clear Skies shout. So, I climbed the mountain myself and made it up to the throat of the world. Well, when I got up there, Paarthurnax wasn't there even though his quest marker was...Any one find out how to fix this?????? (EDIT 2) I am on PC BTW. Is there a command to make Paarthurnax land or restart the quest? — Unsigned comment by 68.44.246.249 (talk) at 14:27 on 13 February 2012
(SOLVED!!!) If the blizzard stops you, and you're just before completing stage 90 (Use the "Clear Skies" Shout to open the path), open console and type movetoqt MQ204. This brings you just ahead of the blocking storm, and enables you to use the shout on fog and go further. On the way to the top of the mountain, you will face other storms. I managed to pass further by clicking on them and type disable on console. When you'll reach the top, as said before, Paarthurnax isn't visible. Basically, you have to disable and enable it. To do so, open console and type:
prid 3C57D
disable
enable
And Paarthurnax will land :-) (sorry for my mistakes, I'm not english ;-) ) Larry lurex 23:19, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
It worked and made him land but now he goes on about "Not until introductions are complete - test your thu'm against mine. So I use fire breath but nothing happens... — Unsigned comment by 76.116.243.161 (talk) at 17:03 on 14 July 2012
yeah for me too he just stands there and no shout not even (bend will) works on him . just repeating test your thu'um ... — Unsigned comment by 217.219.116.209 (talk) at 16:33 on 20 April 2013
Figured that part out. Took me long enough, but if you use completequest mq204
it will finish the quest. After that, he is still stuck on his "Not until introductions are complete" schpiel, but if you type setstage mq205 1
he will land on top of the word wall, you will get fire breath, and he will proceed to talk to you about the elder scroll. Hope this works. — Unsigned comment by 24.183.216.192 (talk) at 12:55 on 18 May 2015

Can't obtain clear skies shoutEdit

I cannot obtain any of the clear skies shout words. The words are on the floor but nothing happens when I walk on and around them and look at them. I accepted the mission but left as the greybeards were putting the words on the floor. I also already have the elder scroll from the Oghma Infinium quest. — Unsigned comment by 24.17.205.138 (talk) at 02:28 on 6 January 2012

Quest marker glitchEdit

climbed to the throat of the world but when i got there i went off to do other quests, always have a tendency to push off main quest stories for side quests in elder scrolls games. So when I went back to finish this and talk to paarthunax the quest marker points in the wrong direction, but on the main map it is correct. I followed it out and it leads me to windhelm, but when i enter windhelm like it tells me it then points to throat of the world. im stuck in this loop

also the only greybeards i can find are wulfgar and borri. both say dovahkin and the place shakes. i found arngeir but he has the normal options. when i run through the gate to climb the mountain a greybeard does the clear skies shout but no one is around — Unsigned comment by 76.108.50.139 (talk) at 22:29 on 31 January 2012

[edit] The Greybeard who does this shout is usually Wulfgar, in my game, and he is in the tower overlooking High Hrothgar in its courtyard. You can't see him from the ground. — Unsigned comment by 69.108.239.209 (talk) at 22:24 on 8 February 2012

Unable To Read Elder ScrollEdit

(PS3) When I finally got around to doing the Throat of the World quest, I had the Elder Scroll in my inventory when I spoke to Parthunax. The dialogue option "I have the Elder Scroll," came up during the conversation right after Parthunax tells me about the Elder Scroll. After he moves over out of the way, I open my inventory, access the scroll and hit [x] to read it. The scroll disappears and nothing happens, though the reading screen is otherwise normal.
When I had gotten the scroll, I had read it and it had opened and flashed me. When it didn't work at this point, I went back through my saves and tried opening the scroll and it wouldn't work, so I'm not sure when this glitch took hold. — Unsigned comment by 76.176.150.140 (talk) at 01:33 on 6 February 2012

What is your question? Can you provide details on anything erratic you may have done in the meanwhile? Is it possible you're dropping it instead? –SkoomaManiac 01:38, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
My question is how to work around this glitch so that I might read the Elder Scroll. I'm unable to progress in this quest because the game sees the Elder Scroll in my inventory, but when I click it to read it, there's nothing there.
What have I done since picking up the Elder Scroll? Well, that's really hard to say. I'm lvl 65 with 338hrs logged (plenty of bugs, lots of instances of having to turn off my PS3 because the game freezes, have the latest update, etc) in the game. I can say that I'd discovered Septimus Signus's Outpost on my own whilst exploring the 'bergs in the north. I completed that quest a while ago, and all of my saves are well after that.
The Attunement Sphere is still considered a quest item (I didn't pick up a second one as mentioned in the Discerning the Mundane page) and I cannot drop it. I was able to read the scroll when I first picked it up, which I did more than once (read, that is). The quest Alduin's Bane has begun with the marker on a spot of snow there at the Throat of the World.
I've tried:
• Quitting & reloading
• Fast traveling from the area (including returning to Septimus Signus's Outpost)
• Seeing if the Orc at the Mage's College will buy the Scroll from me so I can buy it back (he won't)
• Re-accomplishing the quest from the point where you speak to Arangir
• Dismissing my follower (Boghrak the Steel Heart) — Unsigned comment by 76.176.150.140 (talk) at 03:27 on 6 February 2012
I'm afraid to say you may have encountered a one off. It's a shame, too, because it's such a long quest. Try redoing the quest from a save and this time doing it from where Parthurnaax gives it to you. To clarify, did you get complete all the quests leading up to this one? —SkoomaManiac 03:42, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
I have completed "Discerning the Transmundane" and "Throat of the World". Because the Elder Scroll was already in my inventory before I began Diplomatic Immunity (and the quests that followed up through Throat of the World), before I finish speaking with Paarthunax, the dialogue leads immediately into "I have the Elder Scroll", so the quest "Elder Knowldege" is skipped completely and "Alduin's Bane" begins.— Unsigned comment by 76.176.150.140 (talk) at 04:15 on 6 February 2012
It's entirely possible that that broke the quest. Exactly what happens when you try to read it?—SkoomaManiac 04:17, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

() When I try to read it, right before the animation where a normal book would scale up, move to the left-center and open, the scroll simply disappears. The rest of the interface remains as it would have been for any book reading. There is, very briefly, the control note at the bottom saying "[x] Take" (which appears when you pick up a book from the environment) that's in addition to the note "[*symbol for L3*] Turn Page" that remains there as it should. Nothing happens. It's completely inert. I can exit the reading interface normally by pressing [o],—-so it's not locking or otherwise behaving more abnormally (than usual).
It breaks my heart, but I hope this is a one-off. I'd hate for anyone else to experience this glitch.— Unsigned comment by 76.176.150.140 (talk) at 04:25 on 6 February 2012

Can you drop it? If not, I don't think I can suggest anything except reloading a previous save, or moving around. -SkoomaManiac 04:29, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
I cannot drop it. It gives me the "quest item" message. My very earliest save (283hrs, right after escaping the Thalmor Embassy, before speaking to Delphine to conclude the quest) has the same glitch. I went back and tried to read the Scroll and it disappears.
I'm beginning to think this glitch note might be more at home on the page for the Elder Scroll rather than Skyrim:Throat of the World quest page. — Unsigned comment by 76.176.150.140 (talk) at 04:37 on 6 February 2012
I don't think there's enough conclusive evidence here to put it anywhere. It looks like a one off. I'm really sorry. —SkoomaManiac 04:57, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
Yeah. It happens, though. Thanks for your help. — Unsigned comment by 76.176.150.140 (talk) at 05:00 on 6 February 2012
If you are indeed standing inside the Time Rend, the location near the word wall where the air shimmers, than the program seems to be acting like it is not recognizing the proper location for the scene activator. --Anubis Priest 04:10, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

() *_*I have had the same glitch on my PS3 occur. My elder scroll shows a blank area, where I know it should open and progress the story. I show up at the Throat of the World, open the scroll, and the same thing happened to me. I tried all the same resolutions mentioned here, and nothing. This is officially NOT a one off, since it happened to more than one player. — Unsigned comment by 173.8.196.233 (talk) at 17:07 on 29 October 2012

This is ridiculious - I have the same problem - already had the elder scroll loooong before starting this quest and I cannot read it - just like the guy above. So many hours of plaing this game will go to sh** if this isn`t solved. Oh, and I play on PC, so it`s not just a problem with consoles. I`m increadibly dissapointed with bethesda. the should really focus on their bugs. Last game of their I bought that`s for sure. PC Used the console to remove the Dragon scroll from my inventory (player.removeitem xxxxx 1, then player.additem xxxxx 1), then added a new one. Bam. Scroll reads just fine. Apparently, the item itself becomes bugged somehow. Find the item code for the elder scroll by typing "help scroll" without quotes into the console. and using pageup and pagedown to scroll through the list till you find it. You want the one that's the shortest after you remove the zeros from the front of the code. This made me squirm a little cause I don't like using the console, but it's better than having to use an old save and lose work. -lordbyronkey — Unsigned comment by 173.19.87.7 (talk) at 15:52 on 20 February 2014

Dragon MaskEdit

I always have the Krosis mask on me equiped. A number of times Paarthurnax addresses me verbally as krosis (aka the voice actor speaks the word crosis) Is this a coincidence or will he speak every dragon mask name? --24.62.211.63 23:42, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Krosis means "sorrow" in the dragon language. He's simply saying he's regretful. It's the same dialog for everyone. GrogGrogGrog 23:45, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Rock mirage glitchEdit

I was on my way to Paarthurnax when I came to the wooden bridge. I jumped down to collect the knife and fork and then couldn't get back up, so fast travelled back to High Hrothgar and did the whole thing again, only this time a large rock had appeared which came up to the height of the bridge and was as long as the bridge, sort of filling the gap. Although the rock was visible, when I tried to walk on it I just fell through it. This was on Xbox 360. — Unsigned comment by 78.86.97.195 (talk) at 15:21 on 15 April 2012

GoatsEdit

Anybody else notice that the goats you encounter on your way up to see Paarthurnax are killed by some of the weather barriers, but immune to others? I watched a goat walk through a barrier that looks like clouds, which damaged me, then die at the next barrier, which looks like blowing snow. --Xyzzy 15:37, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Frost damage usually has a damage over time effect, what you could be seeing is the goat dying from the same barrier's damage in a different location. --76.104.173.14 01:05, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
I noticed that although my character was whining constantly about the pain of the cold, and probably was taking small amounts of damage, there were only three impassible pain-barriers; the first one by the monks, and two others. Both of these two others were preceded by goats that would flee from you into the barriers and die within seconds, in order to warn you that the barriers existed (the first barrier is over a bridge, preceded by a single goat; the second is through a tight crevasse between the rocks, and is preceded by two goats). Way i see it, anything you can walk through without dying isn't a barrier, it's just weather; and weather won't kill goats. --DewiMorgan 20:15, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Conversation loopEdit

I appear to be stuck in a conversation loop. I am wondering if this is due to the recent update. He asks why I would want to learn the shout: MQ204 quest stage is 180 He then says "But you have indulged my weakness for speech long enough. krosis. Now I will answer your question.": quest stage changes to 190. But then he just loops back: "Ah, I have expected you. Prodah." - but he already said this back at stage 150! And there's no path through the intervening conversation tree that doesn't keep looping back at this point. The following command advanced the conversation, though it skipped what i hope is a small amount of dialog. setstage mq204 200 --DewiMorgan 21:07, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

This turned out to be a bug in the UESP patch and not the game itself. It has now long since been resolved. DewiMorgan (talk) 22:35, 7 August 2014 (GMT)

Translation Source?Edit

The page includes a translation of the chastisement given by Einarth to Arngeir:
"Arngeir. Rok los Dovahkiin, Strundu'ul. Rok fen tinvaak Paarthurnax."
"Arngeir. He is Dovahkiin, Stormcrown. He will speak (with) Paarthurnax."

What's the source? Specifically, I want to know how "Strundu'ul" became "Stormcrown", and what exactly Stormcrown means in this context. Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 05:49, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

having the Scroll alreadyEdit

It seems the page doesn't fully recognize the option where you already have the Elder Scroll. I'd imagine it would go something like this:

Paarthurnax: To cast you back in time, I need an Elder Scroll. But I have no idea of where to find one.
You: No prob, yo. Here you are. *Brings out a soiled Scroll* Used it to clobber little children and as a sex toy mostly.
Paarthurnax: ---

Kidding aside, what does happen, exactly?

Will the next quest (Elder Knowledge) start - and then stop immediately again?

Or do you still need to run through hoops (talk to the Greybeards etc)? CapnZapp (talk) 15:52, 9 December 2012 (GMT)

It's kinda dumb. Paarthurnax gets exactly the same dialog (during this quest) if you already have the Elder Scroll. Then, at the end of Paarthurnax telling you to set out and find the Scroll that you already have, both Throat of the World and Elder Knowledge complete. Elder Knowledge completes without any objectives having been assigned so it doesn't appear in your quest log. Then Alduin's Bane starts as normal. --Morrolan (talk) 02:05, 2 January 2013 (GMT)

avoiding hostility between Paarthurnax and followersEdit

It says in Notes in the article that there can be hostility between Paarthurnax and followers. I did have this happen when I went the first time, so I reloaded to just arriving at the location, then I used the Ice Form shout to immobilize my follower (Bother Verulus, from A Taste of Death) and spoke/shouted with Paarthurnax while follower was frozen without a problem. Thought I would share an easy solution for those who play, like I do, with constant followers. :) Crayolamanic (talk) 20:22, 10 January 2013 (GMT)

You could just tell him to "wait here" a little while away so the follower doesn't go anywhere Paarthurnax. - Chez talkemail 20:28, 10 January 2013 (GMT)
This was before I learned that temporary followers who do not have wait command dialogue options can still be told what to do by holding down the appropriate button to shortcut. I thought I was rather clever...LOL. I found the shortcut to command mode by accident not long ago. :) --Scribbles (Crayolamanic) 23:27, 17 February 2013 (GMT)

Finding PaarthurnaxEdit

I jumped up "The Throat of the World" before it was time, hoping I might find Paarthurnax. Unfortunately, he was nowhere to be found. Then I got to wondering where he could be and thought maybe he could be found. So, is it possible to find him hiding somewhere in the game? Perhaps similar to finding the "Do Not Delete" chests. Or the hidden people in the hidden chambers that speak for shrines. Is it possible to find paarthurnax before time? If so, where? Cjesseg (talk) 23:47, 18 June 2014 (GMT)

So, I had the same glitch as everybody who had to manually start this quest, so I did the trick where you skip this quest and Esbern is somehow in the Ratway, Delphine is still in Riverwood (After doing MQ204) and Paarthurnax hasn't flown down. I'm going to continue trying to find the Elder Scroll and hope for the best, but is there any way to get Esbern and Delphine back in Sky Haven Temple, and to get Paarhurnax to land?

Talk to ArngeirEdit

(Xbox One Special Edition) Once the quest starts, I have the "Talk to Arngeir" objective with no marker. When I talk to him, it lets me ask about Dragonrend and everything and he even says "I will show you the path to Paarthurnax", but he doesn't. He either sits back down, meditates, goes to sleep, or whatever he was doing before. If I push him away from the object he's interacting with, he will go outside to the gate to the Throat of the World and stands in the middle of the others as he should, but doesn't teach the shout. Keep talking to him and he either says the come outside and I will show you line, or his generic lines. The quest is basically uncompletable, maybe unless I cheat to get the Clear Skies shout but I don't know of any mods that let me do that. — Unsigned comment by 24.187.110.249 (talk) at 14:21 on 6 August 2017

You only need a horse to climb the mountain and avoid the strong winds. However, unless you are on PC you will miss out on the Clear Skies shout, though it is not necessary for anything else in the game. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 14:24, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
There's really no other way? Are there mods that let you get the shout? Not that I can't live without it but I like having it. 24.187.110.249 18:38, 7 August 2017 (UTC)OP
I doubt there is a mod just to add that shout, but there may be ones that unlock all words of all shouts for instance. You'll just have to search them on whatever system you are playing on. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 19:11, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
