Killed Farkas wolf spirit, only the "I need you to follow me" optionEdit

Killed Farkas wolf spirit then "Talk to Farkas" but there's only the "I need you to follow me" option

This has been driving me nuts for ages. Every time I reload a previous save and try to finish this I am unable to. I get to the Flame of the Harbinger and use the witch head. After killing the wolf spirit I am told to "Talk to Farkas" and all I get is the "I need you to follow me" dialogue option. And even that only gets a reply of "Looks like you've already got someone." And to make it worse he just keeps following me. I haven't been able to find a solution to this anywhere online. This is for PS3 so console commands aren't applicable. I appreciate any help. — Unsigned comment by 70.70.14.177 (talk) at 02:03 on 10 August 2013

Having this same problem on pc special edition, but with Vilkas. Tried a number of different approaches, the only thing that actually changed is if I fast travel to whiterun with him (still with 'talk to vilkas' as goal), he comes with me, but the quest marker goes away and he walks out of the gate. At that point the goal 'talk to vilkas' persists, but no quest marker, and I can ask him for work again, but never complete the quest. Aradapilot (talk) 18:30, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

The Silent Vilkas' Bug persists...Edit

I've encountered a rather annoying bug, which seems different from what I've read here. I cleansed Farkas quite a while ago, and have completed all three totem quests for Aela. But even after completing many, many radiant quests Vilkas still won't speak with me. I have glenmoril heads in my inventory, I have done dragonseeker multiple times with Farkas, but still Vilkas won't offer me any radiant, dragonseeker or purity quests. I've tried resetting the Purity quest, but it doesn't seem to change. Any idea's on how to fix this? Doing quests for Aela and Farkas doesn't seem to be fixing it :( — Unsigned comment by 121.222.176.2 (talk) at 16:08 on 28 February 2012 It should be noted that I can see the "I'm looking for Work" option on Vilkas only when I'm on another companion quest, so I can't use it >_> — Unsigned comment by 121.222.176.2 (talk) at 17:57 on 28 February 2012

Has anyone found a solution for this? It's several days I'm trying anything I can to avoid using the console and break this even more... (I haven't the unofficial patch installed, and I guess it's too late now) I can't think to anything more I can do.... I'll also add that I finished all totem quests and Skjor resurrected himself and wanders in Jorvaskr referring to me as a new recruit... I already tried to make the town reset by staying far, but this won't change a thing... 188.217.12.142 23:37, 5 May 2014 (GMT)

Just Have patience, thats what they tell me, it takes awhile sometimes to discover soulutions on these things, especially bugs of this manner, there are simaler bugs listed elsewhere on the wiki, maybe the soulutions to those could help you? Dunehelm (talk) 23:51, 5 May 2014 (GMT)
Here is how I was able to solve this: Accept any mission from the companion leaders. Advance up to the point where you will complete the mission but don't complete it yet. Instead go to Whiterun and kill Vilkas and then complete the mission, so that he is dead when the misc objective "Speak to the leaders of the companions for work" happens. Now resurrect Vilkas using the console. At this point you should have the speak to the companion leaders active with arrows only pointing towards Farkas and Alea. Complete any other companion mission, and then talk to Vilkas and he will start giving quests again. I didn't know about the bug and purified Farkas first and then noticed Vilkas wasn't giving quests. After doing this I was able to get normal radiant quests from Vilkas as well as purify him. Later I was able to purify myself whenever I wanted. I had 2 heads in my inv the whole time. -Adam — Unsigned comment by Adam bise (talkcontribs) at 04:14 on 13 February 2017

Farkas may suffer the "Vilkas Glitch" tooEdit

I had Farkas behave the way his brother Vilkas does when he glitches during the "Purity" quest: he stops following, the quest marker disappears and the uncompleted quest drops into the Journal's "Completed" section, and you become stuck with an invisible perpetual Follower, preventing you from engaging new Followers.

To work around this, it's essential to have a Save from just before initiating dialogue with Farkas to begin the Purity quest, and to have two Glenmoril Witches' Heads in your inventory. If you activate the quest and it glitches as described above, simply reload the pre-quest Save and do any radiant quest for Aela. When that is complete, find Farkas, do another Save (purely precautionary), and initiate his quest again. Farkas and the quest should behave normally now, allowing you to complete Farkas' Purity. At least that's how it played out on my game. (360).

Having wrapped things up for Farkas, Vilkas' Purity quest should now proceed normally. It's a good idea to deal with Vilkas immediately after taking care of Farkas and to commit another precautionary Save before initiating dialogue with Vilkas, just in case.

When Farkas was initially glitching for me, I had initiated dialogue with him in the "Whiterun" city game cell, in the training area outside of Jorrvaskr mead hall. After I had done a mission for Aela and spent a bit of time away, Farkas was indoors in Jorrvaskr when I initiated his quest again and it ran smoothly. (Specifically, Farkas was sleeping in Jorrvaskr's "Living Quarters" when I initiated conversation with him to have the quest run properly.) I'm not sure if the indoor/outdoor location of quest initiation has anything to do with Farkas glitching during Purity, but it might be something to keep in mind for anyone dealing with the same glitch. The same "talk to him/her when in bed" strategy seems to also work for getting Aela to give her 3 "Totems of Hircine" quests, instead of a never-ending string of "Animal Extermination" quests, so there might be something to it.

To keep the quests' running time down to a minimum, I fast traveled between Whiterun and Ysgramor's Tomb. No sense in stretching things out and inviting disappointment when glitches are writhing behind the scenes.

Incidentally, the Glenmoril Withes' Heads never seem to become properly flagged as "Quest Items" when doing Purity for Farkas and Vilkas. They add weight to your inventory, can be dropped and aren't consumed when you activate the flame in Ysgramor's Tomb. Thankfully, the heads don't become stuck in your inventory and can be removed when the quests are complete. Hideous things. Evil-i (talk) 22:47, 28 August 2014 (GMT)

Farkas Won't Give JobsEdit

I completed the Companions questline. Again. I found all three Totems. Again. Farkas wouldn't give me any jobs, so I couldn't do Purity for him. I did what the article suggested and did an Animal Extermination job for Aela. Farkas still won't offer me any jobs. Any suggestions for dealing with Skyrim glitch 1,543,836,129?24.159.122.98 09:01, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

It seems that doing the Dragon Seekers quest with Farkas and then going to do the Totems of Hircine with Aela will break the Purity quest. You really do have to know exactly what order to do things to keep from mucking up your game permanently.Valeria (talk) 20:47, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

I was streaming this quest on twitch and i completed this quest, bugs and allEdit

I was streaming this quest on twitch today and I was able to complete it, with the bugs and all. For both brothers. Ill post a link but it was around the one hour mark of my stream. Zomge_videos is my twitch name.--Maldini (talk) 09:48, 24 November 2021 (UTC)

Need a Glenmoril head sometimesEdit

Farkas and Vilkas would not give me any other than the normal radiant quests, they would not give me Purity. However once I put a head in my inventory the normal response popped up. I suspect that this may be because I had all 5 heads originally and thus no need to fetch one more. So if they won't give you this quest try having a head in your inventory.
