Taron Dreth

Taron Dreth is a Dark Elf elemental mage who claims to be the "world's foremost expert" in Dwemer metallurgy and forging techniques. He is supposedly the author of The Aetherium Wars, but reading Katria's journal in Arkngthamz will reveal otherwise. After finishing Lost to the Ages, you may meet him on the road, traveling with three mercenaries. He may also appear with his three mercenaries in the Silver-Blood Inn in Markarth.

If you have the Aetherium item you created at the Aetherium Forge in your inventory, he will approach you and ask where you got it. He will always engage you in combat no matter what you tell him. Backing out of conversation will also cause him to turn him hostile and attack. If you sold the Aetherium item or are otherwise no longer in possession of it, you will still be able to talk to him. However, if you mention Katria, he will engage you in combat.

He wears unique robes and a standard pair of boots. He is equipped with a leveled dagger which can be up to glass quality, and has a chance of carrying various other items, including potions, ingredients, a leveled staff, and three pieces of Dwarven scraps.

DialogueEdit

When spoken to if you don't have the Aetherium on you:

Who are you?
"Taron Dreth, the world's foremost expert in Dwemer metallurgy. Not that you would know anything about that."
What are you doing here?
"I'm on my way to Markarth to confer with my colleague, Calcelmo. I've no time to stop and chat."

The first option leads to:

I've heard about you. From Katria.
"Katria? No, no that's not possible! You... you know too much. I can't afford to let you live. Guards! Kill him/her!"

If you are wearing or carrying the Aetherium item you made, he will walk up to you and say:

"Your crown/shield/staff... gods, it's made of Aetherium! Pure Aetherium! Where did you find it? Tell me!"
I made it.
"What? You... you found the Forge? The Aetherium Forge?"
Who are you?
"Taron Dreth. The world's foremost expert on Dwemer forging techniques. Now answer my question!"
No I don't think so.
"Then I'll take it from your corpse! Kill him/her!"

The first two options will lead to:

I had some help. From Katria.
"Katria? No, no that's not possible! You... you know too much. I can't afford to let you live. Guards! Kill him/her!"

The second option also leads to:

I've heard of you. From Katria.
"Katria? No, no that's not possible! You... you know too much. I can't afford to let you live. Guards! Kill him/her!"

You can also walk away without telling him anything, though he will also turn hostile:

"No answer? Then I'll take it from your corpse!"

SpellsEdit

NotesEdit

  • Although Taron mentions being a colleague of Calcelmo, there is no evidence of that, and you cannot ask Calcelmo about it.

BugsEdit

  • Taron and the mercenaries may not become hostile after mentioning Katria to Taron Dreth. ?
  • Taron may only use generic NPC dialogue, without any option to speak to him.
