Oblivion talk:Elder Scrolls Historical References

New PageEdit

This is a new page moved from Easter Eggs, as discussed under that page's talk page and archived talk page. For now, the plan will be to move, doing only superficial edits, re-link everything, delete the original content, and THEN do any more extensive edits required.

After thinking about it for a while, and considering the nature of the discussion, I decided not to create these as sub-pages of the Easter Eggs page, since they're really not Easter Eggs in the classical definition of the term. --Robin Hood 16:53, 21 February 2008 (EST)

Namespace?Edit

Why is this under the "Oblivion" namespace? It would make more sense to put it under "General." Any Reasons? --HMSVictory 11:37, 23 February 2008 (EST)

As explained above, this article was recently split off from Oblivion:Easter Eggs because the references here do not qualify as Easter Eggs, but are still interesting and worth mentioning. It's in the Oblivion namespace because all of these references occur in Oblivion ;). —Eshetalk12:19, 23 February 2008 (EST)

Morrowind playerEdit

In the construction set it says the defualt name of the player is Bendu Olo. Does anyone know the defualt name of the Morrowind player. - Jyggalag The Great Library of Jyggalag 04:12, 28 February 2008 (EST)

IIRC, the default name of the player in Morrowind is "player". --Gaebrial 05:59, 28 February 2008 (EST)

Spectral MudcrabEdit

The note on the Spectral Mudcrab being the Mudcrab merchant from Morrowind should be removed, and the Spectral Mudcrab should instead be included as an individual easter egg. To my knowledge, it has no basis. There's nothing on or about the Spectral Mudcrab to suggest that it's the ghost of the Mudcrab merchant - no dialogue, no notes or hints in the CS, no similarity of purpose, not even any alcohol in its inventory to give a tenuous connection. It's just a leap that people made because they're both Mudcrabs and both easter eggs. --NightStryke 17:16, 5 March 2008 (EST)

Drothmeri commanderEdit

isnt the morag tong assassin sent to kill the drothmeri commander it says hes sent to assassinate frathen drothan but that is untrue according to the assassins page, so i changed it to drothmeri commander.if im wrong can someone bring it to my attention.--LuciusZelgius

House Redoran attackedEdit

Yesterday, while walking through the market district of the Imperial City, I've overheard a conversation about House Redoran being besieged by Nords of Skyrim. Does this count as a reference? 85.112.220.76 01:18, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Not really. It's just a rumor, and one we already mention here. There are similar rumors about the other great houses. It's not a historical reference, just hooking into existing lore. –rpehTCE 17:57, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Morrowind NPC appearancesEdit

It says that M'aiq the Liar is the only Oblivion NPC who appeared in Morrowind, but other Morrowind NPC's were present in the Shivering Isles. Who were the NPCs in SI? The article later states that Elante of Alinor was in Morrowind and Oblivion, which is a counterexample to M'aiq being the only Morrowind/Oblivion NPC. 71.31.232.240 03:22, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

"iron clad" i don't think soEdit

the commna tong egg says that the commna tong agents are "iron-clad " but when i found them they had glass amror on so should someone change this or am i just taking this to serius? — Unsigned comment by 142.68.118.47 (talk) on 11 March 2010

Correct, I've changed it. --SerCenKing Talk 17:43, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

East Empire CompanyEdit

How can I know East Empire Company is bankrupted (Vvardfell 04:27, 7 November 2010 (UTC))

I find it out, see Dranas Llethro page. (Vvardfell 12:53, 12 November 2010 (UTC))

Double Tarhiel ReferenceEdit

The article mentions the reference to Tarhiel in the Black Horse Courier after the Sheogorath daedric quest twice, under items and people. is this necessary? — Unsigned comment by 98.84.127.179 (talk) at 05:07 on 12 January 2011‎

Blackwood CompanyEdit

Several years too late, but it just occured to me that the Blackwood company have many similarities with the real life Blackwater Mercenary company. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackwater_Worldwide - Anyone else think this is worth adding to the list?

Aias 21:58, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Blackwood is the swampy area in southern Cyrodiil. Definitely not a reference. Legoless 22:00, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Umbra EnchantmentEdit

Under Morrowind: Items, the article asserts that the Umbra sword "has the same effects as the one in Morrowind", but this isn't strictly true. In Morrowind, the Soul Trap enchantment is Cast When Used, while in Oblivion the spell is Cast on Strike. 87.112.65.196 18:13, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Yeah well the difference is so technical to be irrelevant. The point is it's the same sword because it traps souls in both cases. --SerCenKing Talk 13:47, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Fallout and the Sweet RollEdit

I'd like to point out that Bethesda also uses this same Sweet Roll situation in the beginning of Fallout 3, where Butch (one man from a three man gang) tries to take your sweet roll. You have multiple options on what to do with it. I have never played the first three Elder Scrolls, but I'd like someone to go back and see if these same (Or very close) "responses" to Butch are the same in other games. Then we can put this reference on this page... Officially.

This is what you can tell Butch in response to him wanting your sweet roll: "Mrs. Palmer said I didn't have to share. Since it's my birthday...." "How about we share it? Half for me, half for you. That's fair, right?" "You can have it. I don't even like sweetrolls." "Sure Butch. <Spit on the sweetroll and give it to him>" "Go soak your head, Butch. I'm not giving you my sweetroll." "You do look hungry. What, your mom drank up all the ration coupons again?"

Thanks! Hope we can get this up soon. — Unsigned comment by 68.52.3.254 (talk) on 18 June 2011

This isn't something we're interested in hosting. This isn't a wiki about Bethesda, it's a wiki about the Elder Scrolls, and Fallout-related information isn't relevant here. This has come up several times, eg in relation to Raven Rock. rpeh •TCE 09:23, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Seed-Neeus/Seyda NeenEdit

I'm pretty sure the player is directed to Arrille's Tradehouse when they start the game in Seyda Neen, not Southern Goods and Trade. — Unsigned comment by 67.207.12.4 (talk) at 21:27 on 14 September 2011‎

Falanu HlaaluEdit

There are many NPCs throughout the series with the surname Hlaalu, none of whom (at least none of the one's I've met) have any connection to House Hlaalu. I don't feel that this should be listed as a historical reference. — Unsigned comment by 67.207.12.4 (talk) at 21:31 on 14 September 2011‎

Oblivions Arena Fan in SkyrimEdit

In the Dark Brotherhood quest line towards the end you can read the diary of the jester, you'll find a reference to him pretending to be the Fan of the Arena Champion, following him everywhere and then killing him. I think this may be an inside joke/reference to the fact that in Oblivion people took great pleasure in finding new and unique ways of killing the Fan, the fan getting his own back? — Unsigned comment by 212.56.94.85 (talk) at 18:13 on 14 November 2011‎

Mentioning of Altmer in Summerset Isles.Edit

I can't remember what exactly is said, but I remember there being a lot of gossip I'd overhear about the Altmer and "Trouble in the Summerset Isles" Perhaps a hint towards the Altmeri Dominion in Skyrim? — Unsigned comment by 24.224.98.50 (talk) at 01:59 on 6 December 2011‎

Redguard Reference?Edit

Should Bothiel's comment "The orrery here is the only one in Cyrodiil. There's one more in Hammerfell... the old one at Stros M'Kai." count as a reference to Redguard? Aven Ice-Heart (talk) 00:52, 2 August 2013 (GMT)Aven Ice-Heart

...Okay, I'll add it then. Also, should this page's organization be changed to resemble the other historical references pages? Just a thought. Aven Ice-Heart (talk) 01:27, 3 August 2013 (GMT)

Allusion to Morrowind's running gag about Nords and witchesEdit

Here's one that I thought I'd bring up, since I posted it a little too early on the article itself:

Nord NPCs with low Disposition towards a female player or NPC may utter "You remind me of a witch I once knew. I hate witches." upon seeing them. This may be alluding to a running gag in Morrowind, where one could find Nord barbarians in the wilderness, having been victims of encounters with a witch, and being stripped down to their undergarments as a result. Bauglir100 (talk) 17:51, 6 March 2015 (GMT)

Yeah, seems fine. —Legoless (talk) 18:04, 6 March 2015 (GMT)
Given the multiple quests in Morrowind involving Nords and witches, I'd agree with the line being a reference. Forfeit (talk) 21:59, 6 March 2015 (GMT)

The Black ArrowEdit

One of the possible Arena titles is "The Black Arrow". A possible connection to the book title from Morrowind? Timeoin (talk) 02:34, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

It's not a strong reference, but it was probably intentional. I think it would at least be good to mention to let the reader decide. —Dillonn241 (talk) 05:40, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Iron MaidenEdit

Similarly, Iron Maiden title (a female character title, feels like a reference to either the popular heavy metal band (or the device it was named after) Timeoin (talk) 03:29, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

In either case, this doesn't belong because it's not an Elder Scrolls reference. Considering that it could be two different things, without further information I don't believe it's strong enough for an Easter egg either. —Dillonn241 (talk) 05:40, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

The Warp in the WestEdit

The book The Warp in the West found in Oblivion is a Blades-authored account of the events of Daggerfall and the aftereffects of its endgame, commonly referred to as The Warp in the West. Your player character, being an agent of the Blades, is even mentioned in the book! — Unsigned comment by 172.221.28.176 (talk) at 18:00 on 7 April 2022 (UTC)
