Palgata Tansa - an admittedly very silly woman - lived with a bear in a thicket of the Grey Forest. Her house was made entirely from rotten wood and the Bear, who was always hungry, destroyed it at least once a day. Of course he did not do that on purpose; it was just in his nature to draw attention to himself, and that he enjoyed it was only one - for the bear - very pleasant side effect.
But at some point, after a long, long time, Palgata came up with the idea to change everything. Probably the stress of the rickety wooden house's daily reconstruction had a little to with it. There were some ideas that shot through her head. She thought about building the house in the crown of a tree, but then the Bear's weight would be a serious problem, and also the steady effort of climbing high and back down daily would not be so easy to ignore.
She also had the idea to build the house on a raft, but she had never learned how to build a decent raft that would actually float on water. Once - that was when she had still lived in the village - Colored Rudolf tried to teach her how to build a raft. In vain. Palgata was incessantly diverted by a certain bear, which played so gladly with the fish it caught in the river.
Anyway, the idea with the raft was in any case due to lack of skills in the water and so it was only her last idea. She decided to build a house of stone. However, this was a very daring idea, because the only stones that existed throughout the Grey Wood were in the village, from which she had been banished.
She remembered it as if it were yesterday. At that time she had the most coveted job in the entire place. The village shopkeeper had billed Palgata as his helpmate in his service and the work was anything but hard. Maybe she was boring and stuffy, but no one could argue that she would have to work hard as the grocer's assistant. Anyway, one day she had to get the flour out of the barn and take it to the store. She had a shock when she saw how big the bags were. And since she had an idea, she would get help, and not normal, in fact. No! She ran down the old meadow and a few moments later she was back in the barn and tried to heave the heavy sacks of flour onto the bear's back. She made it and now led the Bear to the grocer's store. The first sack of flour went well, and the second too. But the third time the bear saw that - just as expensive as delicious - salmon from Storm Edge hanging on the wall and lunged at it. Of course, not only the fish took damage. The entire grocer looked after, honestly, like a bear cave. The excited people, threatening with their pitchforks, was the last thing she had remembered from the village.
It would not be easy to steal the stones, but they would dare. That night, she crept with the bear into the village and loaded the stones onto his back. It was pitch dark and she could not even see the ground beneath their feet. Suddenly she heard a loud haunting sound, right where the bear was. She moved forward and found him lying on the ground gasping for air. He had collapsed under the immense weight of the stones and could not get up.
She stayed by his side and tried to persuade him to get up, but it was in vain. In the morning, the bear died and Palgata lay down beside him.
