Lore talk:Clavicus Vile

InspirationEdit

I know this may be a bit of a stretch, but Clavicus Vile having a wisecracking companion named Barbas who assumes the shape of a dog reminded me of DC Comic's character Destruction (made up by Neil Gaiman in 1991, way before even "Arena" came out and thus possibly a source of inspiration in character creation), who is depicted as one of "the Endless" (similar to Daedric Princes in terms of immortality and representing certain aspects of existence - Mehrunes Dagon for Destruction, Hircine for Hunting, Sanguine for parties...) and has a talking dog companion by name of Barnabas. Should this be added in a "Notes" section or some Easter Eggs page or is it merely coincidence? Horkheim gro-Agrakh 07:40, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

I think the possibility of it being an actual inspiration is to low to warrant it to be added to the article. --Timenn-<talk> 13:50, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, cool with me. It was mainly about the "Barbas-Barnabas" thing to begin with. (This one's open to debate nonetheless.) Horkheim gro-Agrakh 14:42, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Technically speaking this is a good idea, but incorrect. If one were to research a book known as the Ars Goetia (Not in any game; It is a real book), it depicts quite a few "Demons" that are believed to exist in Hell in certain religions. One of them is actually named Barbas who, according to Wikipedia and other sources (Though this is directly taken from Wikipedia's page): "He answers truly on hidden or secret things, causes and heals diseases, teaches mechanical arts, and changes men into other shapes. He is depicted as a great lion that, under the conjurer's request, changes shape into a man."
When paying attention to Barbas in the game The Elder Scrolls: Redguard, there is a point where Cyrus (The main character that you play as; Unlike all other games, in Redguard you are specifically a male Redguard named Cyrus) goes to wager his soul against his sister's soul in the realm of Clavicus Vile. Barbas is shown as a massive dog who constantly changes shapes. Comparing this with Clavicus Vile's nature to tell the truth but hide information from others (When he deals with mortals and gets them to do his bidding, only to have it turn against them) in comparison to the idea that Barbas (The dog in the games) changes shapes (Which include turning into a lion, I believe), I feel this is far more accurate than anything else. 11:32 Jan 22, 2012 (CST). — Unsigned comment by 50.103.39.69 (talk) at 05:32 on 23 January 2012 (UTC)
