Map of Morrowind
"Firewatch is the closest City-State to the firecone, Dagoth Ur. Legend has it that a great labyrinth resides under that fiery mountain. Here in this city however, the danger comes from other sources..." —In-game description in Arena

Firewatch is one of the eight major cities on the mainland of Morrowind,[1] found on the Ouada Gla'amnir inlet of the badlands in the north, on the shores of the Sea of Ghosts.[2][UOL 1][UOL 2][3] Firewatch is found in eastern Morrowind, which is the territory of House Indoril.[4] The city acquires its name because of its proximity to Red Mountain from the mainland. It is a beautiful city at peace that safely provides a grand vista of the volcano from within its walls, but is not without its own inner dangers. The terrain near the city consists of mesas, arid plateaus, and high steppes.[5][UOL 3] There is a large unnamed island found north of the city,[1][6] and the famous Indoril fortress of Bal Tereg is found close by.[UOL 1]

Layout and GeographyEdit

Firewatch is a coastal city found along the eastern Inner Sea strait, across from Vvardenfell and where it meets the Sea of Ghosts.[1] There are some shallower parts of the strait where striders can cross with ease, but the waters can become dangerous in the winters and many sunken shipwrecks are found at the bottom.[UOL 3] The large island found to the north has a fertile plain-like terrain.[1][UOL 2] The buildings are constructed in the Indoril style. The settlement called Tel Aedrin is located somewhere south of it, and the Indoril fortress village of Bal Tereg is found nearby.[UOL 3] Firewatch is located on the inlet region called Ouada Gla'amnir deep in the badlands area of Morrowind's mainland,[UOL 1][UOL 2] which spans across the province's Northeast Highlands areas and is characterized by an isolated population that tends to herds of bugs.[7][8] A great palace and well-guarded harbor are found in the city,[5] along with a Silt Strider that usually provides regular transport.[UOL 3] Firewatch is neighbored by several settlements, including Velothis Haven to the east,[9] Helnim Wall to the southeast, and Old Run to the west across the sea.[1]

HistoryEdit

During a certain Chil'a prior to the Interregnum, a witch of Molag Bal once made an assassination attempt on the heir of Firewatch using poison, but this ended in failure.[10] The ancient Indoril fortress of Bal Tereg has stood near the city for thousands of years, though rings within rings of stone suggested even older civilizations had made their home there. Vivec himself stayed there on more than one occasion.[UOL 1]

Circa 2E 582, the Hidden Kindred chartered the merchant ship Stormwing to transport Peryite's holy miasma from Firewatch to Necrom. These vials were then used to infect that city's ancient Necropolis.[11]

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, Firewatch was ruled by Queen Vaynth and had a rivalry with Ebonheart.[5] Around 3E 428, many of the citizens (from the nobles to the slaves) were all considered Azurite worshipers of Azura and got along very well with each other. The great palace was abuzz with the news that there had been several bodies of guards discovered hidden away in a closet, and the local Silt Strider had gone missing.[UOL 3]

NotesEdit

  • In an early concept map of Morrowind, Firewatch is the only city from Arena to downsize into a smaller one, seemingly replaced by House Telvanni's capital city called Port Telvannis.[UOL 2]
  • Arena was originally conceived as a fighting game featuring a tournament that took the player to each of Tamriel's cities to challenge different gladiatorial teams. According to a file from that stage of development left behind in the final game, Firewatch's gladiatorial team would have been called "the Blood Mages".[UOL 4]
